It is not an unpopular opinion to say that University is the most stressful time in a youth’s life – well at least before you into the workforce.

Basically, nothing that comes before can compare with the magnitude of pressure students face in school.

The classes, assignments, tests, deadlines whilst still trying to have a social life. Sometimes 24 hours doesn’t seem to be enough.

These guidelines would by no means totally eliminate stress. Stress is a part of life and its inevitable.

I’m here to teach you how to “manage” University stress in order to balance academic success and healthy social life.

The first mistakes students make especially new ones is that they overwhelm themselves trying to hit that 1st class.

This makes them think they have to make a choice between education or having a social life.

You don’t have to choose, you just have to balance them out, after all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and all play an no work renders the reason why you’re in school mute.

That being said, if you ever have to make a choice between both then your academic should take precedent.

This leads to the first lesson

Prioritize

You have to understand that your primary purpose for being in school is to get an education.

So when a friend asks you to tag along to a rave and you have a test or exam around the corner then stay home and study.

If you’re going to spend years of your life getting an education, its best you actually GET IT.

If you’re going to sacrifice your sleep for anything then let it be for school.

Sleep

It's inevitable, you're going to have sleepless nights in uni, but don’t make it into a habit. Getting 8 hours of sleep is excellent for Optimal brain function.

Constant sleep deprivation is linked to a decline in both long term and short term memory.

How do you hope to perform well in school with bad memory? Do not ket social functions cut to deep into your night time especially on a school night.

Have A Personal Time Table

Every school has a time table, but do you have a personal time table? If you don’t then get yourself one.

A regimented life is a stress-free life – well, not completely stress-free but you get my point.

Set out time to study, 2 hours a day keeps failure away and/or a comprehensive study during the weekend also helps.

Avoid Distractions

Distractions come in many forms, from that cheating boyfriend to that PlayStation you always think about playing while in class.

Have fun, have friends, have a relationship or relationships but when that starts to place undue stress on you find a way to manage those distractions.

Late night parties on a school night is a bad idea, spending too much time fighting your bf/gf is a bad idea.

Remember rule number one, prioritize! Nothing should come before studies.

Manage Your Expenses

It would be an injustice if this isn’t mentioned. Money is a scarce resource but as a student, that scarcity is on a whole different level.

As students, the expenses seem to be unending, from Food to handouts and a ton of miscellaneous expenses.

Thinking about the next meal can lead to a great deal of stress.

This is where a scale of preference comes in, Everything that you NEED should come first in other if importance, followed by everything you WANT.

If possible avoid indulging as many wants as possible and if you ever have to pick between say getting food and transporting yourself to school, pick food.

You can study with your friends on a later date, but between food and handout or tests that would factor into your GPA then the choice is clear.

This is where you need to use your discretion, this is where delayed gratification comes in.

Hunger is temporary, CGPA is forever.

In conclusion learning all of these would be impossible without discipline, they would prove useful years after school and in every facet of your life.

If you are going to embark on any life journey, put your back into it and do it well.

You can go to school more than once but its best you do it once and excel in it.

It is profitable to learn from lessons than from personal experience.
