Lord Egerton Castle

Re: Nairobi Photos (kenya): A Beautiful East African City by naliakar: 5:30pm On Jan 26, 2010
Does Egerton University have anything to do with Lord Egerton's castle?
Re: Nairobi Photos (kenya): A Beautiful East African City by gallivant: 2:39pm On Jan 27, 2010
Does Egerton University have anything to do with Lord Egerton's castle?

Egerton University is a public university; the main campus is in Njoro, near the city of Nakuru, Kenya. The chancellor is Ambassador Bethwell Kiplagat and the vice chancellor is Proffesor J. K. Tuitoek.

The school was founded in 1939 and was originally named Egerton Farm School. It was established by a large land grant of 740 acres (3 km²) by Lord Maurice Egerton of Tatton. The school's original purpose was to prepare white European youth for careers in agriculture.

By 1955, the name had changed to Egerton Agricultural College. A one-year certificate course and a two-year diploma course in agriculture were offered. In 1958, Lord Egerton donated another 1,100 acres (4.5 km²) of land.

Soon afterward, the college opened its doors to people of all races from Kenya and other African countries. The first African principal, Dr. William Odongo Omamo, was appointed in 1966.

In 1979, due to support from the Government of Kenya and USAID, the college expanded yet again. It became a part of the University of Nairobi system.

In 1987, the College was finally recognized as a Chartered Public University.

Great Rift Valley pictures. I notice you took the old Limuru Road from Limuru to Nairobi. Next time you chance to be on that road, you could try detouring off to Tigoni Limuru and take the Banana road. Half way from tigoni is a place called Kanyawa you branch off at the Kenchic factory toward Limuru Girlsl and Mabrouk Tea estate. That entire are has breath taking scenery and worth having. The vast Tea expanses, the nice settler homes that line the road and Breathtaking panoramic view of the gentle descent to Nairobi City. Try it one day and see.

Tigoni is the first place where the British planted tea in Kenya
