Facebook Admits Recent Password Leak Affects Millions Of Instagram Accounts by Reediano(m): 11:57am On Apr 21, 2019
Facebook just announced via a recent blog post that it encountered a security issue which saved millions of user's passwords in plain text instead of the company's system of "masking passwords using techniques that make them unreadable."

This incident first came up last month where Facebook claimed only tens of thousands of accounts were affected, but on further investigation, the company found out that the issue was more wide spread and it estimate that millions of Instagram users were affected.

According to the updated post, it says:

“We discovered additional logs of Instagram passwords being stored in a readable format,” the company said. “We now estimate that this issue impacted millions of Instagram users.

We will be notifying these users as we did the others.”
“Our investigation has determined that these stored passwords were not internally abused or improperly accessed,”
Going by this post, Facebook claims that investigation has shown that no one from inside or outside the company accessed these passwords. The company however still hasn't given an exact figure as to how many users were affected.

Facebook still hasn't given details as to how this bug occurred but it's advisable to change your WhatsApp and Instagram passwords. Facebook also suggest that you enable two-factor authentication on your Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp account.
