My thoughts exactly. The Nobel Prize is an award by the academia to the academia not to the most popular. Their assessment of a work does not necessarily include popularity or simplicity. These guys might as well inaugurate an award for the most popular works. I don't understand how anyone would critique a process, despite not knowing how the process actually works.

Wole Soyinka gained acclaim as a Playwright and Essayist not a novelist though he wrote novels too.
Wole Soyinka is a thinker not a writer of literary popcorn. The Man died was not written for enjoyment or entertainment . It is a serious work requiring the reader to exert themselves.

It is clear you have no idea what you are talking about if you need to compare Soyinka and Achebe.

They did not operate in the same Arena.
Wole Soyinka was more involved with THEATRE.
He wrote plays. He directed them and acted in them He was involved with a theatre company and I believe put up a performance on Independence day 1960.

So I do not see how their paths cross for any comparison.

Soyinka covered the entire spectrum of Literature.
Poetry, Novel, and Theatre written and practice.

Wole Soyinka wrote plays that were performed at the National Theatre in London. That is acclaim. Wole Soyinka himself in his youth was an actor and theatre director and got wide acclaim for this so I really do not know why all this compensatory bitterness is neccesary.

The question is who are communicating to. While some academicians endeavour to communicate information directly to the world, others only communicate to their peers. I've read their works, they are great orators and a big blessing to Africa literature. However, Achebe's work is meant for the commoners, an average reader who doesn't av in-dept knowledge of literary appreciation while Prof. Soyinka work is for the elite, you have to go to a great length to decipher it, and that's the beauty of literature. Mind u, Literature comprises of poetry, drama and prose.

Good points, with one small correction. Achebe also wrote Poetry. "Beware Soul Brother" and another volume the name of which I have forgotten. Also, in "There was a country" Achebe often interspaced the Prose with Poetry.

While Reno has a right to his opinion, I think he was remiss in calling out Soyinka in quite that way. I like Achebe, I also like Soyinka, and while the Nobel is a good thing, his winning it does not define Soyinka. His body of works does. It is in the same way not winning it does not define the late sage, Achebe.
