Achebe was a novelist and wrote interesting, thought provoking books. Soyinka covered more genres than Achebe. Depth wise, Achebe wasn't close. Soyinka never really had a strength. Of the 3 genres, he covered all and did that effortlessly.

As a student of Literature, myself and the entire class had issues analyzing 'Think it Rains', a poem by Wole Soyinka. So good and confusing was it that reference materials couldn't help an entire class of undergraduates.

Soyinka's books might not appeal to non-literature students for several reasons; his choice of words, poetic license, unconscious confusion he creates in his works amongst many other things.

Sentiments aside, Achebe was the better novelist of the two when compared. But when we talk about the man who understands the very depth of Literature, then Wole Soyinka takes it.

Both were incredible in their writing days but Achebe was just a man of one field. Soyinka's works are not for every Tom, Dvck and Harry.

My thoughts exactly. The Nobel Prize is an award by the academia to the academia not to the most popular. Their assessment of a work does not necessarily include popularity or simplicity. These guys might as well inaugurate an award for the most popular works. I don't understand how anyone would critique a process, despite not knowing how the process actually works.

They are not critiquing the process but the outcome because they do not like it. If Achebe had won it we would be hearing a different narrative .The truth is the Prize is awarded annually and although Wole Soyinka was the first African at least one more has won it but Achebe was never even nominated. All these years he could still have won it if he had anything worthwhile

Achebe never had the Nobel for Literature conferred on him for one main reason: His acclaimed stance against the white establishment in their attempt to depict black Africa as an inferior race. He was renowned for challenging long-held views that African literature is not pristine and that African writers had little literary merit.

Achebe dared the supremacists. He hinted severally that he didn't need the prize to underline his standing as one of the best men of letters of all time.

In. terms of depth, technical and cultural significance, reach and universality, Soyinka knows there was no time he could have held a candle to Achebe.

The 3 genres of literature are Prose(Novel), Drama(Play), and Poetry.

While Soyinka ticks the box in all, Achebe ticks only the Prose box.

While Soyinka is an acclaimed Playwright and Poet, Achebe is an acclaimed Novelist.

Soyinka won the Nobel for the dual reason of Drama and Poetry, and this much reason was stated in his award justification, as the reason for all other awardees are stated.

I have earlier on tweeted that, Wole Soyinka is unique and creative in his own way as well as Chinua Achebe. Wole Soyinka is physiological and renowned for hard sentences which take a highly intellectual and deeper thinker to dissolve and absorb while Chinua Achebe was known for simplicity of expression and a master storyteller and you know many people love a sweet storyteller.

You have written nothing but the absolute truth. Soyinka is poetic and highly philosophical. This is regarded as true Literature. Even when he uses simple English (as in many of his plays), there is still always a juxtaposition of the poetic and philosophy.

Let us look at his The Interpreters and compare it to Chinua Achebe's No Longer at Ease The two books focus on people trying to make a meaning from a relatively new Nigeria.

Soyinka's work was deeper, highly philosophical and even goes deeper as to weave the stories of the Yoruba gods and goddesses into the tale. But Achebe's own is like telling a straightforward story.

In summary, Soyinka is a thinker and a master of the English language while Achebe was a master storyteller. Expectedly, many people will like Achebe's own. People like stories. That is why Harry Potter is more popular than all the works of Toni Morrison put together.
