On May 4, 2019, tragedy struck at Aduragbemi Street, Alagbado area of Lagos State as a four-year-old boy was crushed to death by a car in his parents’ compound.  One Adenowo Adeyiga  said to be the driver of the Toyota Camry car, with the number plate, KTU 242 FC, was said to be returning home from Ijegun – on the outskirts of Lagos – when his car had a brake failure and lost control. The deceased identified as Segun Egunbambi who was playing at the scene of the incident, sustained leg injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in the neighbourhood for treatment. He died from the injuries some hours later.

The suspect who was arraigned before an Ikeja magistrates’ court on three counts bordering on reckless driving and manslaughter after his car crushed the four-year-old boy in his parents' compound, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him by the court registrar.While the case was adjourned till June 20, 2019, he was granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in the like sum.

Quite unfortunate. If it was actually a case of brake failure, then the man should walk, unless he has been negligent.

Sad. Reminds me of a harrowing childhood experience, I and other kids were playing in an open play area next to my compound after school,a Bedford tipper loaded with sand lost control and rammed into where we were playing, one of us got ran over with intestines spilling out and was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately died hours later, aged 6.

That’s considered involuntary man -slaughter by law.It’s punishment is much more lenient unlike homicide.Unless the family chooses to withdraw the case, fact remains a life was taken, though accidentally.

Angry mob in their traditional jungle justice descended on the car damaging it further.
