An alumna of the University of Ibadan, Mariam Olafuyi Momodu, has been awarded the most prestigious scholarship for doctorate candidates in Canada, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.

Mariam is the only black person from the University of Toronto to be awarded the scholarship and she is one of the six scholars of African descent in the whole of Canada that was given the award.

A former president of the Law Students’ Society (LSS), UI branch, Mariam graduated with a First Class Honours and had earlier been awarded the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship to pursue her Masters at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program helps Canadian institutions attract highly qualified doctoral students; and is valued at $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies.

Consideration for the scholarship is hinged on three equally weighted selection criteria: Academic Excellence, Research Potential, and Leadership. And the areas of research include: health research, natural sciences and/or engineering research, social sciences and humanities research.
