The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama says the federal government has engaged the US government over suspension of the drop box visa regime for Nigerians visiting America. Onyeama however lamented most of the unpleasant migrant decisions taken by some countries were triggered by the negative perceptions about few Nigerians who do not obey the rules of those countries.

He spoke on Tuesday during an interactive session with the Diplomatic Correspondents on his stewardship. The issue of migration is a challenge and such a sensitive topic because the US has just suspended the drop box for visas renewals.

“And a lot of it is that they released statistics to show that 10 per cent of people who overstayed their visas globally are Nigerians. Those who do not obey the rule of other countries’ have more negative impact on those who obeyed. “The issue of those who overstayed their visa is a real issue. We have engaged with the US government over it. We are just trying to work through them and they are looking at various alternative and solutions and to make less difficult for the genuine visitors and the like. Things like you have to have guarantor or surety and the like all those things are what they are trying to apply to really address this prickly issue,” he said.

He said the ministry was doing what it could to ensure the issue of the recent suspension of drop box for visas renewal does not affect genuine visitors to the US. “We are doing what we can they (U.S. Embassy) told me that notwithstanding the suspension of drop box mechanism that there would be expedited interview for certain people. “And that there would be that flexibility to request for interview that might make it easier for those seeking visa,” he said.

Drop box visa is for those who are renewing their visas and normally they don't go for appearance interview. They will just drop it into US embassy box and the embassy will just treat it and renew their visas without any interview. But now everybody will show up for interview even if you are 1000yrs old, you will come for interview. Shikena!

Very true, making the well meaning Nigerians suffer, my sister who works for a government ministry was denied visa to go for a course in Europe because they fear she might not return or even over stay her visa. Its really sad

And one can not blame the US embassy for it as a good number have abused it. Can you even imagine that Kenyans are issued 5 year visa by the US embassy in Nairobi, what they benefitted from Obama's visit in 2015.

It's getting to a point that most developed and sane countries will start to deny Nigerians visa then we'll know that the pop has hit the fan! Both political class and business class won't be exempted! Until we begins to frown at this epidemic of quick wealth that most Nigerians are crazy about.

Thus is part I find .whereby they deny government workers .your sister case not the first .I think its now a diplomatic issue and an effrontery ..how can the government request you give its worker visa for a fully funded by the government course and you deny ..see no matter what ,this is an insult .I don't care what way any one here looks at it but Nigeria needs to without telling them any thing start denying visas after all many of them come in for business .America isn't a super power but a user and PR stunt

The most annoying part is that you can't even appeal the decision...your visa fee gone....little wonder why you are people so nervous because they know it is not about your intent of travelling that guarantees the visa but it is based on luck....is that one a reasonable process?
