LECTURE ON OIL PALM PLANTATION: ABLATION & PRUNING OF LEAVES

1. ABLATION is an act of removing initial palm bunches/florescences from young oil palms before they mature. The bunches produced initially (at early age: 2-3 years) are usually very small and have low oil content. Removal of such bunches/ inflorescences is called ablation or castration.

2. Ablation is done at monthly interval by pulling out the young inflorescence using gloves or with the help of devices such as narrow bladed chisels or cutlasses.

REASONS FOR ABLATION

1. Removal of all bunches/inflorescences during the initial 3 years is found to improve vegetative growth of young palms so that regular harvesting can commence after 3 and half years of planting.

2. Ablation improves drought resistance capacity of young palms by improving shoot (number of bunches) and root growth especially in low production areas where dry condition exists.

3. It also enables the young palm to have a strong base and shoot bunches around the firm base.

PRUNING OF LEAVES

1. PRUNING is an act of cutting down some stems (leaves). In oil palm, two leaves are produced per month.

2. Therefore, it becomes necessary to prune excess leaves so as to gain access to bunches for harvest.

3. Note, severe pruning will adversely affect both growth and yield of palm, cause abortion of female flowers and also reduce the size of the leaves.

4.  It is recommended that oil palms aged 4 - 7 years should retain 6 - 7 leaves per spiral (48 - 56), those aged 8 - 14 years 5 - 6 leaves per spiral (40 - 49) and those above 15 years should have 4 - 5 leaves per spiral (32 - 40).

4. Leaf pruning is carried out in using chisels or cutlasses so that leaf base that is retained on the palm  cannot be affected

5. Pruning is preferably carried out at the end of the rainy season. It is also better to carry it out during the low crop season when labourers are also available.

SOIL AND LAND REQUIREMENT FOR COFFEE.
Robusta Coffee can grow on different soil types. But
for best root establishment and high yields, it requires a
fertile, well aerated, free draining, slightly acidic, deep soil
with reasonable humus content and a minimum depth
of 1-1.5m in well moist and 3m in drier areas. Robusta
does not tolerate water logging or ‘wet feet’. The best or
ideal soils are volcanic red earth or sandy loams with good
structure and texture and rich in organic matter. Avoid
heavy clay or poor-draining soils, for good productivity.
In addition, the soil should be just slightly acidic, with
a pH range of 5.5 – 6.5, within which it would be well
supplied with all the essential major plant nutrients. A pH
level below 5.5 will limit crop performance and at this
level, adequate liming must be done to correct the pH
levels back to a suitable range.

SPACING AND METHOD OF PLANTING
The optimum planting density for oil palm is the density of population that gives maximum production from unit area. Triangular system of planting with 9 x 9 x 9 m spacing accommodates 143 palms/ha. is being recommended. For efficient utilization of solar energy the rows are to be oriented in the North-South direction. Equilateral triangular system of planting with 9 m spacing between palms will allow each plant to occupy the centre of a hexagon thus allowing better use of the area.

TRANSPORTING SEEDLINGS AND PREPARING PITS
While transporting seedlings to the planting site one hand is placed at the bottom of the bag while holding the plant collar with the other one. Leather gloves can be used to avoid injury with spines of the leaves.

Pits of 60 cm3 are taken prior to planting and filled with surrounding top soil and allowed to settle. Rock phosphate is applied at 200 g per planting pit. Nitrogen is not usually applied in the planting pits as the application of fertilizers may damage the root system and affect survival of the plants if there is a dry period soon after planting. Nitrogen and potassium are usually applied 4 - 6 weeks after planting. In Mg deficient soils, magnesium is applied at 100 g as anhydrous MgSO4 or 200 g epsum salt per plant.

COCONUT PLANTATION: A PROFITABLE VENTURE

Coconut plantation is not popular like oil palm plantation in Nigeria despite its numerous economic benefits, let us journey into coconut farming.

Hence, let us briefly analysis its economic benefits.

1. Coconut, like many other perennial agricultural economic crops are multi-million dollar sector. When compared with oil palm plantation, coconut plantation has low capital-intensive, low labor intensive and life-long sources of steady income (it is all year round tree).

2. Globally, the demand for coconut oil is in increase on daily basis due to its industrial value. Nigeria imports coconuts from Benin Republic, Togo and Ghana, to provide raw material for local industries.

COCONUT VARIETIES

There are basically two varieties of coconuts: Tall and Dwarf.

1. It is the cross breeding between Tall & Dwarf (TxD), that produce hybrid Dwarf coconut which is very high yielder under good management conditions.

2. The hybrid dwarf coconut varieties start producing inflorescence in 2 to 4 years after planting. Dwarf coconut variety produces more nuts/fruits per tree per year; 40 fruits per bunch in 17 bunches under ideal conditions. These would give about 680 fruits/nuts per tree.

3. The characteristics of hybrid coconuts include: early maturation, fruiting between 2 and 4 years, unlike 5 to 9 years waiting period for the tall varieties; more kernel and oil content.
There are species like: Malayan Yellow Dwarf Coconuts, Fiji Dwarf coconut and
Golden green Malay.

INCOME ANALYSIS

One hectare of land will accommodate 200 trees of coconuts in low density plantations. In the high density plantations, about 280 to 300 trees are planted on one hectare of land, while 450-480 trees of coconuts are planted on one hectare in the ultra-high density plantations.

At least, each coconut tree would produce about 200 coconuts in a year, and the nuts would increase as the trees mature in age, bearing fruits for no fewer than 60 years

One hectare of land using the high density population (300 trees per hectare). Averagely, 1 hectare of coconut plantation will produce 60,000 nuts (300×200 = 60,000).

Note: fruiting and harvesting would start in the fourth year if hybrid varieties are planted.

Smallest size of nut is be sold at the rate of N150. Therefore, 60,000 nuts × 150 = N9,000,000. This will generate an annual income of 9million annually.

MANURE AND FERTILIZER APPLICATION FOR PALM TREE

Oil palms require a balanced and sufficient supply of micro, macro and secondary nutrients for high production of palm oil. In oil palm cultivation, fertilizers should be applied at every 3 months interval. Starting from the June or July, 4 equal split doses of fertilizer should be applied at 3 months interval. In case of newly planted trees, first dose of fertilizers should be applied after 3 months of planting. Farm yard manure (FMY) of 75 to 100 kg or 90 to 100 kg of green manure and 5 kg neem cake should be added per each oil palm tree along with 2nd dose of fertilizers. These fertilizers should be applied in the soil with the help of field fork at least 40 to 50 cm away from the palm base. Do not forget watering the palm trees after fertilization.

HARVESTING OF OIL PALMS

The oil palms will be ready for harvesting in 2.5 to 3 years after the plantation in the main field. Determining harvesting time is very important in oil palm cultivation as it greatly impacts the quality and quantity of oil. Harvesting can be done when the fruits on palm turn into yellowish – orange colour and 5 to 8 fruits drop on their own. The final check would be when pressing the fruits hard with finger, orange coloured oil should extrude from the palm fruits. Harvesting takes place throughout the year and generally done in 10 to 14 days interval with the help of sharp knife or sickle. A stalk length of 5 cm should be left while harvesting the fruit bunches.
