China Issues 5G Licenses In Timely Boost For Huawei by Jacseyi(m): 9:21am On Jun 06, 2019
SHANGHAI/HONG KONG (Reuters) - China granted 5G licenses to the country's three major telecom operators and China Broadcasting Network Corp on Thursday, giving the go-ahead for full commercial deployment of the next-generation cellular network technology.

The approvals will trigger investment in the telecommunications sector which will benefit top vendors such as Huawei Technologies, just as the Chinese network equipment provider struggles to overcome a U.S. blacklisting that has hurt its global business.

State-owned carriers China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telcom, as well as state-owned broadcaster China Broadcasting Network Corporation Ltd, are the four licensees named by the government.

The three carriers had been granted trial 5G licenses at the end of 2018 and Thursday's announcement gives the go ahead to begin commercial deployment ahead of the original timeline that was targeting that for 2020.

The accelerated 5G rollout could help Huawei as Washington pushes its allies around the world to drop the firm from their 5G networks due to fears it could be used as a tool of Chinese state espionage, a claim that Huawei has repeatedly denied.

Huawei said in response to the license grant that it was prepared to support China's 5G build-out. It said it had signed 46 5G commercial contracts in 30 countries to date, shipping more than 100,000 5G base stations.

China is racing against other countries to deploy 5G on a large scale, paving the way for advances in technologies like artificial intelligence and autonomous driving.

Some analysts however believe China's 5G rollout will face difficulties due to the U.S. ban on Huawei buying parts and components from American firms without Washington's approval.

"We remain concerned that if the U.S. export ban on Huawei remains in place for some time, and is even extended to other Chinese tech companies, it will be very difficult for China to build 5G in scale," Jefferies said in a note.

"The action by China to accelerate 5G licensing does not remove or alleviate this risk."

Telecom operators in Britain, the United States and South Korea have already started offering 5G services in limited areas.

China welcomed foreign enterprises to participate in China's 5G market, an official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which issued the licenses, said in a statement. Foreign firms likely to be interested in the rollout include Nokia and Ericsson.

China Mobile, the largest Chinese telecom operator, said it planned to offer 5G services in more than 40 Chinese cities before the end of September.

Shares in Chinese 5G-related firms such as ZTE slumped after the news, as investors pocketed gains.

Luvinghubby:
I think these clearly confirmed that Huawei is partly state owned.
They are secretly bankrolled by Government to kill off competitors.

You are totally wrong....Chinese government gives priority to every business, I mean equal opportunity to all enterprises, esp. the indigenous ones. In fact, many of the state-owned businesses in the Northeastern part of the country can no longer compete with the private ones in the Southeast. Besides, is anything wrong if the Federal Government of Nigeria is successfully running a tech company like Huawei? It's unfortunate that we've been brainwashed by western media that always see anything that's not from the west as bad.

martineverest:
I will start seeing china as a force to reckon with when they start leading in research and development

China is already a leader in tech innovation from High Speed rail (450km/h), to Artificial Intelligence, 5G tech, Space science etc. China, just like Japan, America started by engaging in reverse engineering (copying) but they've learnt, mastered and improved virtually all these tech and they are now innovating to more advanced level. About research, pls check Chinese Academy of Sciences CAS, last year they had the world's biggest number of scientific publications. Our problem is that we read too much of western news. Either you believe it or not, western media hardly report anything good about others. Many of friends do ask about BH, Chibok girls as if it's all that's happening in Nigeria. Nigeria today is leading in tech innovation in Africa and it's getting attention and funding from outside but many of us do not know this because CNN do not and will never report it.

jaxxy:

China can’t go anywhere without the us and the us probably needs China in many ways. They know it.
You see too much of CNN, BBC and Foxx

falopey:
On Africa matter. China is the new colonial master in Africa now putting African countries under the yoke of unplayable debts. China has started taking over national properties like sea port of African countries that failed to pay its loan. China having its way, would put the whole world in “yoke “. That’s why I prefer America to China.

China may not have bombed any country. The bitter truth is, the bombing that the US did to some countries is the reason why the whole world is in freedom for the most part. Freedom of religion, freedom to be who you wanna be, freedom from Islamic conquest of the world, freedom from communism where everyone would have been properties in the hands of government.
That bombing like the ones against Islamic terrorists and jihadists is the reason why you are a free man with western education. You have to see things in both white and black.

To you, China is forcing African leaders to take loans? How many infrastructure has China taken over in Nigeria, or West Africa. I remember Sierra Leone cancelled an airport project and nothing happened. What many of you do not know is that, China is helping Africa to bridge a wide infrastructure gap at the same time booming its own economy, reason while China calls it win-win deal. For your information, corrupt leaders do not have access to those money, as the money goes directly to China companies executing those projects unlike WorldBank and IMF loans that go directly to the purses of our politicians and from there back to the western economies.

As for the USA bombing everywhere as they wish, kindly note that US is doing that for resources control and power and nothing like helping in any kind of freedom. How is bombing of Libya, Iraq, or the ongoing invasion of Venezuela or Iran etc give you freedom? Stop listening to too much of western propaganda. A country that has KKK and presently having a President supporting such do not have any moral.

Abeg when will Glo and MTN start talking about 5G?

Is it when the whole world move to 6G? I don't understand NCC again o

don't let people who say 5G go chop data 5G go chop Data foool you

I went to YouTube to hear from people who are already using it and what they are saying is,

if you want to download e.g 1GB movie from the Internet on 4G it will take 30-40 minutes but on 5G it will take 5 seconds.

Now the difference here is the timing of the download. On 4G 1gb will be deducted from your plan while on 5G 1GB will be deducted from your plan also.

It's like downloading with 3G and 4G LTE. Same 1GB will be deducted for downloading the same file but the difference is the timing. 3G might take 1r 20min to complete while a proper 4G LTE will take 30-40 minutes to complete base on Glo levels. But 5G will take 5 seconds.

However, all of them will still deduct the same 1GB for downloading the same movie file

China is the future of technology...

Our network provider especially mtn would not talk about 5G, because your monthly data would only last few hours with it.

the West to lose out on the race for 5G..
