[img][/img]The rise of modern science

James R. Moore

The years from 1500 to 1700 saw not one but two profound upheavals in Western thought. In religion Luther, Calvin, Zwigli and Knox were replacing human centred one view of the world with a God centred one. In science Copernicus, Galiloe, Brave, Kepler and Newton were replacing a universe centred on the earth with one centred on the sun. A religious reformation and scientific revolution went hand in hand. The search for casual connections between the Protestant reformation and the rise of modern science has involved historians in a very complex debate. Basically, the debate has taken place between two points of views: first, that religion gave decisive encouragement to science; and second, that both religion and science were spurred by another factor, such as social and economic developments. There is distinct and plausible evidence that protestantism gave rise to modern science. To begin with, there is evidence of specific Protestant contributions to the scientific revolution. A Lutheran prince, Duke Albrecht Prusia, subsidized the publication of the astronomer Copernicus De revolutionibus (1543)
Andreas Osiander, a Lutheran theologian, arranged for the printing and wrote its preface; Joachim Rhaeticus, a Lutheran mathematician and professor at the reformer Melanchthon's Wittenberg University, supervised the printing; And Eramus Reinhold, another Wittenberg professor supported Copernicus' teaching in his astronomic table.
Tycho Brave and Johann Kepler, the greatest astronomers, were both devout followers of Luther. Michael Maestlin, Lutheran pastor, edited Kepler's Prodromus (1596).

David Chytraeus, a Lutheran theologian, dealt with the new star of 1572 in his commentary on Deuteronomy, pushished a book on the comet of 1577, and discussed these phenomena in letters to Brahe.
During the seventeenth century the followers of Calvin took the lead in advancing the cause of science. Philip Van Lansberghe, a Reformed minister and renowned astronomer, Became the keenest Supporter of Copernicus in the Netherland. His fellow countryman Isaac Beeckman, was an early defender of the atomistic philosophy

With these

Is then very stupid and total ignorance for anyone to think science is again Christianity or Christianity is against science.
