You might not agree with me and that's fine but as long as a university can issue a valid I-20 they are good to go for an F-1 visa. What most people are unable to do at the interviews is to demonstrate why, out of all the schools in the United States, they choose to go to those obscure ones

Going by this visa thread on NL, almost if not all who selected such schools didn't even fill the DS-160 form and left everything, from school selection to visa application, in the hands of an agent. How then would such a person give any coherent reason why they selected such schools. Also, people who search for schools themselves and go the whole 9 yards, don't select such 'suspect' schools. It's that simple.

No one should be going to any university in the US because the VO would like the school, or doing a PhD because the VO won't like to see another master's degree. The VOs are inconsequential in that regard, let's stop giving them too much credit. The visa application and interview is another process and time and again it has been stated that it is about proving non-immigrant intent at the discretion of the VO. That is what they are legally obligated to do, not tell you the school is small or big or whatnot. Those are jobs for other people. Again, you could ask them, and they would agree.

this makes some sense

Do Asians say the same thing when applying for Visas?
Do Europeans fast when they apply for Visas to the US?
Do you know why South Africans are among the countries who can apply for TESOL jobs in China, Japan and other Asian countries with no restrictions?

Answer these 3 questions

Also, VOs aren't gods. They are like you and I, struggling to see reasons to vet and give visas to citizens of a poverty stricken country who want out of the hellhole.

that's true too

Why do you feel that the only reason why someone wants to travel due to poverty stricken country........ People travel for many reasons and take different career path. Some Nigerians do return back after graduation and choose to build a life in Nigeria . That shows you not everyone is trying to want out of the hellhole you call Nigeria

Americans themselves dont they go to other countries to school ?. If Nigeria was so bad , do you think any Vo will accept to come and work and live in Nigeria. But they do so for different reasons or Maybe they cannot find a better job in their country meaning then they are not so great tongue . However the true reason there is a reason . The Hellhole you called has so many foreigners living in Nigeria even from these 1st world countries. How So?, if it is so bad

While i believe that God is a very busy person and Nigerians worry him over irrelevant stuff cheesy and dont truly live in godly ways but call God only for wants and needs...... For me make them carry go if it makes them feel better and doesnt hurt anyone . If you dont believe in God that fine , some believe in God and it works for them so hey let them carry on

you know it, and I Know it.

the minority who want to are also there

Living in a country that does not give two fvcks about you is hard to swallow for people in that class

Sorry for the denail but I think APSU Masters program in Math ain't accredited hence not recognized yet. The school is less than 10years old. Any funding?

Why this school? Perhaps you should talk about what Dr Vajira was specifically doing as a first point then channel your interest to it before concluding with funding too.

I am really sorry about your denial my friend.
I know you didn't ask for my opinion but I care about you enough to point few things out. First, I can't explain why you didn't get an approval, I am not the VO that interviewed you but I can see areas you could have done better.
Bold one: APSU isn't the only school that offers "broad" course in Mathematical finance and you know it! Choosing a school because of a professor's research is no longer a powerful reason, because a lot of persons have abused it and VOs are getting bored. Predstan and I were "acting drama" the other day and as a "VO" I mentioned that apart from funding and research, some people don't have better reasons why they picked a school. You have to do thorough research on your school and program and come up with a better response.
Bold 2: You currently work as a pension fund administrator? Let's keep that in mind as we proceed.
Bold three: I have said it before and I will say it again. Your post graduation plan has to be about you first, keep Nigeria out of it. Nigeria doesn't care about you, Nigeria probably doesn't know you exist. Nigeria has failed you! Don't say you are coming to contribute quota kini, did Nigeria ask you to do that? Understand where I am coming from please.
Be self centered in your response, when you bag this degree, what are the doors you intend to walk through that you couldn't have access to in the past, what's in it for you! Keep in mind that by becoming a better version of yourself, you indirectly make Nigeria a better place grin
It's a win win grin grin grin. Ok before I get carried away.
You currently work as a pension fund administrator, you are already in the system , you are in a good place to champion the changes you seek. You can start from the man in the mirror like Michael Jackson grin, you can start from social media platforms. Yes, you don't need this degree to do that! It's highly unbelievable that you will spend millions of naira because you want to " harness your creative energy towards solving the problem of delay or non-payment in our retiree gratuity and pension"

This is also not enough reason to come home, where is your home tie?
Bottom line: Your responses in Sharwama's opinion were not convincing enough. In future, I hope you can do better. I wish you well my friend.

Good morning fam. My school (CUNY) is demanding for a proof of income like paystub, tax returns etc of my sponsor, in order to get my I 20. Is this ideal? . Apart from sponsor's bank statement to cover deficits. I got a merit scholarship together with a GRA. I gained admit late because I applied late, and I feel like abandoning this whole thing for France. My sponsor is a business man. Very few business men have tax returns. Can you please advise me on what to do? Thanks!

I strongly suggest that you mail your graduate coordinator and copy the international student specialist (the one responsible for processing I-20) and explain to them that what they’re requesting for is not obtainable.

From their response you would be guided on what to do.

It’s a bit strange for such request to be made actually.

Wrong Information!!!

APSU is older than ten years. It is a public institution in Clarksville. That particular program is accredited and yes the masters program is not up to ten years but very very accredited. The school and that program is very generous with funding if you have a Strong profile. Many have gotten visa with the school and many will still get wink smiley

let's be careful of the information we post here.. Verify first please

I sincerely want to appreciate everyone on this trend for great and invaluable efforts put together to bring up fruitful discussions at all time. I have been a silent follower of this trend and finally, benefit from all your productive comments. May the good Lord bless you guys immensely in return.

My transcript goes thus:

Interview date: July 11, 2019.
Embassy: Lagos
Time: 6:45am
Window: 4, a black American man.

VO: Good Morning

Me: Good morning sir (almost at the same time with him)

VO: Let me have your documents please

Me: All right sir and I passed it

VO: Oh, University of Alabama!

Me: Yes, that's right!

VO: Why a PhD in Applied Mathematics?

Me: Pardon? (Because I wasn't expecting that as a first question)

VO: He repeated the question

Me: I want a PhD in applied mathematics because I'm passionate about the use of pure and applied mathematical concepts to study the evolution, effect, control of infectious diseases and epidemiogy of diseases that follow seasonal trend. I enjoy the use of mathematical models to provide insight into the complex structures of epidemiological and biomedical problems.

VO: Why University of Alabama?

Me: I chose university of Alabama because they have a strong research team in BioMathematics. Their applied mathematics group has excellent and award winning researchers, such as Prof Dang Nguyen who has just received a distinguished award from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. I'm also fascinated by the research of Prof David Halpern-who uses mathematical models to investigate biological and bioengineering process-with whom I have had correspondence.

VO: How did you come about BioMathematics?

Me: During my undergraduate, I took a course on Modeling of infectious diseases and I eventually did my undergraduate research in this area. After which I had a full scholarship to AIMS for my master where I had the opportunity of working under Prof Robert Smith of the University of Ottawa. He later supervised my thesis: Modeling the effect of vaccination on the control of Leptospirosis using impulsive and differential equations. These spur my passion for BioMath and I want to expand my research prowess.

VO: Your GTA, How did you get it?

Me: Pardon? (at this point, I was tired of talking)

VO: Tell me how you got GTA.

Me: The graduate admission committee found my application strong enough and contacted me for the GTA position (I lost composure at this point because this wasn't the response I prepared).

VO: Okay, what is your plan after graduation?

Me: I intend to return to my current place of employment-Landmark University where I currently serve as assistant.....and later pursue a post-doctoral research to broaden my horizons.

VO: Typing for few seconds and then looking at my mouth (as if I have not spoken enough but of course, the flow wasn't like when I was talking about my research)

Me: Yes! (like, that's all)

VO: Continued with the typing

Me: I was just speaking in tongues inside of me with my mouth gesticulating. I was thinking I had floppy responses in the later part of the interview.

VO: Looked up into my eyes and said your visa is approved.

Me: Thank you sir. Thank you for approving my Visa.

VO: No! with reaction. It's my job.

Vo: Reached out for the white paper, pick up your passport after 3-working days at the address indicated on this white paper. And you will need your I-20 at the point of entry.

NB: The VO was patient and he listened to me through out the conversation (lucky me!). I got tired so early because I was passionately dramatizing with my two hands and I expect the interview to end so soon (lazy me!).
However, be prepared for anything, personalise all your responses and be passionate with your delivery.
Chief hope you won't mind sharing your profile
GRE and TOEFL scores, GPA etc.
