This might be a long read guys pls don't be angry with me. I have been a guest on Nland for a while but decided to create this monicker for this purpose.

So this all started when i entered the university in fact i'm now in my finals but as it is now i'm laying on my bed facing the ceiling and we have a test going on in class, i have missed about 3 tests since this semester started but i don't seem to feel alarmed by that, i'll probably have an extra year too the way i'm going but i can't just push myself to get up and read and to wash my uniform being a law student.

Now i feel this is partially because of the fact that i have come to believe school is not for me...i have never been a bright student right from primary school...when i entered the uni as a freshman i had the dreams every fresher had which is to come out with a first class and i worked very hard for it, went for night class every day without sleeping even for a minute, but any time grades came out i always come out at the bottom of the food chain.

I have tried hard to demystify the exact cause of my failure in academics but found no answers, could it be my hand writing, or i don't understand what i read or i'm not good in cramming textbook case laws and sections, or could it be because my brain is just not acclimatized to school and the rigours that come with it.

I have put in effort to handle all these supposed problems but none if them have come to fruition, even to the point that i bought a handwriting book to help improve my handwriting ...yeah i was that desperate

Reality dawned on me tho when my year 2 and 3 results were nothing to write home about...then i started losing interest...hardly go to class even though there is a test...i always say to myself stupidity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results so if i can read and study so much without being able to secure even a C in my courses then i'd rather not try.

Its funny tho that in my year 4 i made more than half a million rendering freelance services to people online...this also fueled my loss of interest in school, I'd rather be committed to something that pays me. I feel bad for mum tho, she put in all this effort to make me learned and give me a good future and she has already started saving for my law school but i know deep down that i am a nut case and can't ever compete with my peers academically.

I have tried my best in fact i'm crying right now, school has always made me feel like a lesser human, i always come out last...i really don't know what to do with life anymore ...i mean why is life so partial and unfair, why can't i be like those bright students...

I brought this here because i believe my Nairaland family will help me get through this terrible faze of my life.

I'll really appreciate if more people get to see this

Thank you

Bro.. In whatever you do, happiness/fulfillment is key.
Its obvious your dont find happiness in what you do (studying law) The best I can tell you is, go for what makes you happy.

However I will advice that you complete your law program since its your last semester.

To be honest with you, I had the same exact experience as you. After I completed my undergrad in Nigeria, I knew 100% I dont want to work for anyone but for myself. I had enough money, actually more than enough money saved up to start a business for myself but because,
"that igbo ideology that either brings you up or forever keeps you down" was having a grip on me.

What I mean is, "as the first son of your father, you should strive to be greater than your father already is". Being that my father got his both degrees from outside Nigeria, I decided to embark of same journey to get a foreign degree. In my case an MBA in a country almost a full day hours from Nigeria. A degree I later knew I just dont f&^king need and it was a bl**dy waste of my time.

At the start of the program, I was enjoying it. Strategic management was the course I enjoyed most. And man I was among the best in class. I even developed a module for solving our trimester course works which other students enjoyed using because it simplified the process. But guess what, on my last trimester, same thing that is happening to you, happened to me. I was just not feeling it anymore.

I will complete my course work and purposely hold it back by a day or 2 just so I submit late. I never missed a class though but I started being late on purpose on that last trimester. And my last course which is management law, i failed it. Well thats by the way now as all is settled.

The point Im trying to make is, if I had used that time to go learn a skill like fx trading which i love and do now or even digital marketing or other IT based skills since as an introvert I enjoy being in front of the computer, I wouldnt have wasted that time for some bl**dy degree I havent bothered to go collect my certificate since I completed the program.

The best I can tell you now is, I know the law thing is a drag for you now but drag your feet the best you can and complete the program. While at it, still do you freelance writing and try to save as much as you can. While in the freelance space, im sure you will be able to find a niche in the IT world that brings you the most happiness, it might not be writing as you do now (I dont hold anything against writing, i write myself. I own a blog), take both free and paid training in different field, watch "how to" videos on youtube. Im sure you will be able to find something that interest you.

I have to say this again, while you do your freelance writing, SAVE some money. I mean SAVE and SAVE. When you think you have saved enough and have completed your undergrad law program, find a visa to western country and leave that bl**dy country. Nigeria does nothing but keep you in a hole with a thick glass ceiling over you.

Before I forget too, find a way to tell your parents how and what you feel about your law program. They may not like it and try to discourage you but the most important thing is that you tell them and they are aware. With your saved money, you will be able chat your course and find your happiness.

My friend go out to the world and make mistakes and learn from it. Never limit yourself. You will be fine in the long run. Goodluck to you.

You think you are depressed and you know what it means to go through difficult times. Trust me you dont but you will find out soon when you drop out without a degree certificate. I have seen what is about to happen to you happen to my friend. He is a singer and performer and was making money from shows. he got admission to read a course he didn't like and was unmotivated. His father told him to try and finish even if with a pass certificate. My guy abandoned his school in his final year to sing song. today his younger brother has also dropped out and his defense is "i am not the first person to do it in this family". Today my friend is chasing undergraduate admission doesn't mind the course because he has become a yard stick of ridicule , something that he got without stress 8 years ago. His fiancees family rejected him....they couldn't allow their daughter who has a MSC and studied abroad marry a university dropout, shes now married to a Doctor.. My guy no longer gets invites for shows and concerts though he still makes money as he has gone into music production. But he has missed out on so many opportunities even an Exxon Mobil job (his father is well connected) because he doesn't have a certificate. He is now seen as someone who is not reliable and doesnt finish what he starts just because of one stupid action. Thats a story his kids will eventually hear. that their father couldnt finish school (When he is not bill gates or zuck). One lesson i learnt is "Always do something whenever your mates are doing it" even if you dont know how to do it. You have the "Wisdom of the crowd that knows you" to help you. He is my physical representation of Job in the bible, cos I have never seen someone endure so many misfortunes till the point his family has left him alone (they still blame him for his younger brother dropping out and he blames himself for it too) . I am sure if he could do things differently he ll try his best to finish with a certificate. My guy now knows depression he understands it, you dont...at least not yet.

This is the only advice I'd side with. 2014, I got admitted to study med Lab sci with connections from a provost of med lab school and many well known lecturers even though my waec and jamb were excellent (2 As, 5 B3, 1 C4 and a score of 246 in Jamb). I don't even know who or what was directly involved. . But when I started, I was very unmotivated. I really can't tell why. Maybe wrong associations, maybe cos it wasn't medicine, I don't know. After the first semester of 100 level, I left the university. One of the lecturers who aided my admission begged me to rescind my decision or at least to defer it. In her exact words, 'I'd regret my decision'. Still I left without deferring. My widowed mum was terribly heart broken. I was hers and my late dad's pride. I was the most intelligent of her three kids. I remember telling her that 'School na scam, if I do business, I go make am quicker'. She always told me and my siblings that we weren't cut out for business life. Still I ventured into photography. Spent 6 months in training to become a pro photographer. In 2015, I bought my own Nikon D3200 camera and a second hand hp laptop. I started meager jobs. I was earning small cash here and there. To be a top photographer tho, I needed equipments; a good Speedlite, good zoom and prime lenses, not my ordinary 18-55mm kit lens, soft boxes, and so on. And these would cost money. Money I didn't have. My camera and laptop were the only thing I could afford then. Few months later, I started regreting my decision of leaving school. I would see my former coursemates in town and they'd ask questions on why I left, but I really couldn't provide any tangible reason for leaving. One even showed me some of my first semester grades and I was almost in tears 'cause I did very well. I was almost getting depressed late 2015. 2016 came and it started just as dull. But just before the closing date for Jamb registration was due, I bought a form. Same course (Medical Laboratory Science), same university. This time around, I would do everything low key without asking for anyone's assistance. I wrote jamb and got a score of 259. I checked on jamb portal when admission status began to be checked and lo and behold, I was admitted. I called my mom and even though she was happy for me, she told me, she wasn't gonna sponsor my admission this time. I was heartbroken but I can't blame her to be very honest. But then, we started hearing news that our admission would be cancelled because of accreditation issues. In fact, our names weren't included in the school's admission portal. School started and still, no news. But I was convinced God was giving me a second chance, so I started attending lectures even though we didn't know our fate. Two weeks before exams, our accreditation issues were resolved and our names finally appeared on the school's portal. Medical lab sci, biochem, and slt had this problem. So two weeks was added for us to receive short additional lectures, while others were writing exams. That was how my second chance began. I'm presently in 300 level. Today, my former coursemates would be inducted as MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTS. I couldn't sleep at all. I would not go to the induction as I may not be able to control the tears. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN AMONG THE INDUCTING STUDENTS, BUT I THREW IT ALL AWAY. The most painful words anyone can utter in life are, "HAD I KNOWN". Don't make costly mistakes that would make you say these words!!!

The moment I started reading your thread I knew your problem. I smiled when I read that you said you made half a million online.

My friend just stop fooling around and finish your studies. My younger brother was like you too. Kept fooling around with his studies.

Money can be made any time, there is time for everything. At your age 21-29 you should be in school aiming for your degree. A university degree is not only for getting a job. Don't be myopic. You need to mentally develop yourself, socialise(basically school is not only for learning academic) Laws can be introduced any time that can destroy your online venture.

Stop imitating the foolish trend in our country today where people don't want to develop their minds, get rich quick at all cost generation.

How did you gain admission to study law? Let me guess, your parents "encouraged" you knowing very well you don't have the credentials and potential for the programme?

Truth is there are no dull people, only individuals who failed to identify their areas of strength. Your problem started when someone decided to pay your way into law programme.

I think you've gone too far to withdraw from school so strive harder and complete your studies. On completion, you can build a new path by first learning to discover yourself, who you are, and what you're good at.

All the best sir
At op, i don't really have time to say much because this bro here has said my mind. Get ur certificate and do what u know best

Dont mind the idio ts telling you school is scam. Look at our political class, those who didn't do any schooling are regretting and employing 32 SANS TO defend them grin bubu comes to mind

There is a huge difference between liking a course and being passionate about a course.
Law is a very good course which almost everyone likes but we aint passionate about it. Its a good thing you dualise your coast. Youre passionate about biz so if u can add additional effort to the course it's fine but if not, u can withdraw and take a professional course if u think going back to school will be late.
My lil opinion

Please, make sure you finish your school and collect the stupid certificate. What happens to you exactly happened to me in my final year, before I knew it I have extra semester, before I knew it again it turn to 2 semesters... Now I am still in school still hustling to get the certificate.

Just finish up, do your texts, go for exam, before you know it, you will get out of the school and you will have a lot of time to yourself to do anything business.

You are now making money right, don't worry, you will make more more more money when you finish school as soon as possible

First and foremost, my sympathies.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Failing at academics isn't the same as failing in life. Only quitters ever loose in life

I read estate.management. One of the guys I was classmates with had an 2 extra years. Yet, he was the first amongst my peers to make 5million in a deal.

Another classmates who had about lots of carryovers is now a lecturer in South Africa!

Because you're doing badly in your academics does not therefore mean you'll fail as a lawyer. The 2 are vastly different worlds.

Don't let online freelancing deceive you. In the short term, it's okay but not so in the long term. There seems to be a glass ceiling. It's best as part time income and not full time one. My junior brother's into it so I have a very good clue about it's. It's extremely competitive and earnings non commensurate with your input due to brutal competition from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. I'm a heavy user of Fiverr as a buyer.

Ensure you finish your law degree and go for law school. When done, work a few years to gain experience and you can set up on your own

Maybe u r reading too much which can make you not remember what u read before. So time your reading to like 3 to 4 hrs on a work day but weekends when you don't ve lectures u can read for 6 to 7 hrs but don't read for the whole hrs straight space the time, ie read for 1 and half hours then rest for 20 minutes talk with someone laugh, play a bit then go back to your reading. And attend lectures cus ur lecturers explanations is important, it help u understand what u r reading, don't read to cram, read to understand the procedures n laws. May God lead u. School is not a scam o! U can still make money later in business or in ur read profession, but ur higher education will help u a lot in business or any venture u want to go into.

Keep your ass in school. Put your phone away, push yourself and stay focus. Tell the tiny voice in your head telling you otherwise to get out. Maybe it’s me but there’s no greater feeling knowing that you got that degree or certificate. You can do this.

Stalemate:
I was once in your shoes just that the difference is/was that, the acknowledgment of my brilliance and intelligence weren't just reflecting as I wanted in my grades (I wasn't having As). In fact, I set some records in my department but may not be recognized though. I led my department to finish first runner up in a national debate where we lost to an old rival, U.I and also set up a platform in my department that got me recognition from top professors in my department. To tell people (my friends and classmates) that I graduated with 3.44 CGPA, they all don't believe.

One thing for sure, I made sure I continue pursuing the very best of whatever I laid my hands on (my undergraduate programme inclusive) and today, I'm reaping the benefits of not giving up. I'll advice you complete your study with genuine commitment. You won't regret you did because, that degree will give you opportunities that only your innate strength can help you retain. I hope you understand my point?.

By the way, I'd like to get to know you more for further advices to spur you up.

I'd send a PM right away.

Thanks!
I practically read the story of my life in your comment.

You are EDUCATED, ENLIGHTENED and SELF AWARE.

You just WOKE UP..... so stay woke.

The course you are studying may have a fancy name and prospect but it is not for your kind of personality, consider this... IF THERE WAS A FACULTY OF INTERNET BUSINESS, AND YOU WERE IN THE BUSINESS OF FREELANCE, am sure you would have been a FIRST CLASS STUDENT or STRONGLY Two-One. My point is You are studying the wrong course, BUT you are NOT a lesser human. You are a Super Human because most of your class colleagues will NOT use anything from the course they studied in school... YOU ARE AHEAD OF THEM.

As a freelancer, kindly expand your field into other online things, buy a land, buy a bus for transport business, invest in agriculture, be a day trader on cryptocurrency...

MOVE ON with your ONLINE LIFE.... because "Las Las school na scam o" ... you will realize this soon if not already.

You are doing fine. Cheer up, plan for a LIFE that is free of the EMPLOYMENT RAT RACE.
