Atikuorbuhari:

"Nigerian universities are spending scarce resources on courses that are not relevant to Nigeria. Instead of STEMs (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), we are churning out graduates whose courses cant help them find jobs or start businesses. We must focus on STEMs."

A limited understanding of the purpose of EDUCATION will lead one to prioritize so-called trending courses over others

No knowledge - if applied - is a waste

Let me explain how the Senate works, now when a Senator raises a Bill it doesn't just fall through and passed just like that. A question would be put and agreed to or negative and it would pass first, second and third reading before being passed. Now on the valedictory day he (Ben Murray Bruce) said something, he said that most Senators don't read and that is fact. Even if he should raise the Motion for the passage of the Bill it might still be rejected because most Senators don't understand what he is talking about. Take for example when he asked for a Bill to implement electric cars in Nigeria, but it was thrown out because probably they don't understand or aren't broad enough to understand the benefits of electric cars. So to me Ben Murray Bruce tried his best, he as a single senator can't raise a Bill and pass it himself. I hope you understand

It would have been easier if he had mentioned those courses that are not useful.

Dear Ben Murray Bruce, every course is useful for the country. If you are talking of our immediate needs, that's a different thing. It's only in this country that we don't fully harness our resources. Don't forget these sciences STEMMED from courses like philosophy. We need our universities to develop human capacities in different areas Thanks.

The most sensible among the pack...

Stop your rant! The man talked in the house but low life crooks representing other states couldn't comprehend all he was saying. Get your facts right!

This guy was in the Senate and he could not raise a motion for Nigeria University courses to be amended and upgraded to current modern day realities..

He truly is a Twitter warrior and nothing else.

Funny enough twitter lord, the sector that employs graduates the most in Nigeria is the banking/financial industry which isnt even among the stem abi na root courses.

Is only the banking sector you would see graduates of various fields such as medicine, law, biologist, statistics, engineer, architecture to say the least.

So sir, find one seat and go and sit down.

There is no irrelevant course. I love science but it does not mean everyone has to do STEM. Not everyone likes it or has aptitude for it.

Are there not many STEM graduates without jobs?

We should generally improve education standards and promote entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity irrespective of academic orientation.

AND create jobs. Education is meant to foster transferable skills that prepares people for jobs.

History graduates can work in banks or administration. Same as engineering graduates.

No more limitation based on course in thriving economies worldwide.

Very true...
..
we should focus only on the best engineering, science, medical and art subjects..
e.g: mechanical,
petroleum,
economics,
civil engineering,
government,
medicine,
nursing,
accounting,
management,
education
..
all those other niche specific courses should be left to foriegn universities.

For the first time in my life, I think I'll go with Mr. Commonsense on this one.

And that's simply because...

I am a STEMs agent myself

Science is God.

Africa will always use oils.... All those gimmick can't work here, we can't produce those electric cars meaning we should be importing them.... That's not innovative but buying foreign technology and keep boasting their revenue
