Hello Nairalander/Nigerians/Africans and the rest of the world.
+
+
A friend started an interesting social media initiative about 4 days ago, I was fortunate to have been invited to participate. It all started on Facebook.
+
+
He called it 10 Days Book Challenge. This is meant to inspire people to read and possible share top 10 books that have changed our lives with the rest of the world.
+
+
So I thought, what if we extend this to other online fora like Nairaland? What if we extend it to Instagram, YouTube and Twitter?
+
+
I love challenge and I joined, this is my second day. I want to bring it here and I am inviting you all to participate. Yes, all book readers/lovers.
+
+
We will not tell people to read, rather we will share important books with them, maybe through this, they will be inspired.
+
+
Rule: Use this format

Use this as post title and edit day as required

10 Days Book Challenge: Day Two

Good day everyone, today is another day when I get to share books that has shaped my life with you.

Book title: The Richest Man In Babylon

Author: George S. Clason

First Encounter: 2006

Comment: it was a gift from my Dad in his attempt to get me interested in reading. The author convinced me earlier in life that gambling/betting is a futile effort as far as being rich is concerned. He said "the goddess of fickle fate gives no permanent fortune to anyone." So wealth amassed through it is not generational.
+
+
You can check my Facebook page to follow up with this challenge, search for 'Ojeniyi Abimbola' and send friend request to me.
+
+
Beyond Nairaland, you can participate on Facebook too.
+
+
Starting from tomorrow, I will start the Nairaland version. You can follow me to get updated.
+
+
I wish to reward anyone that is most consistent in this challenge, so if you participate daily, kindly mention my username in your post. This forum does not use hashtag, name mentioning is our alternative.
+

I am Engr. Abimbola, cofounder of Thinkerspool online book club. We are present on WhatsApp and Telegram. Some people call it WhatsApp book club, but we have scaled beyond that. The book club is duly registered and meet offline in Lagos and Kwara state.

Thank you op! This is wonderful. I'll try really hard not to let indiscipline get in the way and take up the challenge.

After my father told me about this book I spent years trolling book sellers on Lagos streets till I found it one day and bought it with money dad sent me weekly shopping with to his delight though we had no food that week!

Book Title: Basket of Flowers

Author: Christoph von Schmid

First encounter: 1975

Little is known about the origin of The Basket of Flowers, except that it is translated from the French by someone known only as J.H. St. A. The value of this excellent volume lies in its content, which is thoroughly God-honoring and scriptural. The story centers on a gardener named James and his young daughter Mary. Their simple, joyful life is interrupted when Mary is accused of theft. During the trial, Mary maintains her innocence and tells the truth, in spite of great pressure. But Mary and her father are convicted as thief and accomplice and begin their sentence for their crime. Throughout their sentence, James encourages Mary with lessons from nature about the gospel of Jesus Christ and continues to prepare her for what is to come. A well-written book and an encouraging tale for all readers.

It is guttenberg downloadable for those who desire to read it.

My second book was part of a series of books of short stories I was given in school. There were 13 but this one stood out, except there's a problem. I've not been able to find it ever since!

This old man was walking up a hill with his friends when he said he could spend the night up there alone on the hill without a fire to keep warm. His friends' wagered to cook a meal for him if he did, but he would cook for them if he failed.

So night came and the old man sat all alone on top of the hill in the freezing cold looking down into the far away village where he observed a candle lit in a window which he stared at till dawn when his friends returned

"How did you manage not to freeze to death", they asked, amazed. "It was really cold last night!"

"I stared at a candle lit in a window far down in the village all night", said the tired trembling cold old man. "It made the cold bearable".

"Aha! You cheat", yelled his friends in delight. "You had a fire to keep you warm which was against our wager so you've lost and it is you who shall be cooking for us!"

The old man was way too tired to argue with them and went home to sleep.

His friends arrived in the evening for the meal they'd wagered and won but could smell nothing cooking but which the old man said would soon be. Time passed and no food appeared so they eventually stormed angrily into the kitchen and saw a huge cauldron cooking over a single candle light.

"What the heck"?! said the very hungry perplexed friends.

"If a candle in a window so far away in the village can keep me warm on top of a cold hill all night", said the old man, "we can let it cook you dinner".

Nb. I've eventually found the book after much research, and a wiki page with more info and some of the stories. The picture is of a copy I read.

Book Title: The Wise Old Man (Turkish tales of Nasreddin Hodja)

Author: Juda L.

First encounter: 1977

My third book, except I missed a day and these are more appropriately, books.

My cousin arrived to stay with us in 74 and brought all his books with him. I first got hold of his Nick Carters and then I found his porn and I was hooked. I stole and read all his and when I got old enough to bravely buy my own, every single kobo I could lay my hands on went on this porn.

There was, still there in fact, a bookseller in Ikeja, outside the famous Fela record store who would sell me porn and give me 50% off the next one if I returned the first in mint condition. But there was a problem. Ma must not catch me reading porn, so it was over the fence when I got back from school and had by bag searched, then sometime in the evening I must smuggle it to the bathroom window then pop in the bathroom before any one else does and in my pants to my bed and stay up with my porn stuck out the window so I could read all night with light from the building behind us who had a generator.

Except one day, I come out the bathroom and ma's standing right there looking at the 3 porns bulging in my pants! And yes she did ask, "What's that bulge in your pants buda?" She confiscated my 3 porns!

Book Title: Various (110 in total)

Author: James Hadley Chase

First Encounter: 74

It was ma who called it porn. They are crime novels. And I learnt some grownups just don't read!

My fourth book would be a book on tort law, but since it's one I read without fully comprehending a single word, I'll skip it for what many are not aware was the first Bible of the Western world, which I also did not understand until my third read which is why I read it 7 times in the end, and a very interesting tale it was too, though poverty is the real reason I read it so many times, for what else would you do if you have no telly in the house?

If there is one book that made me an atheist, it would be this one, for it gives an idea of the concept of Gods that makes one's thinking go way beyond the Judaic God despite being of more archaic understanding of the Gods, by pointing out the limitations of the human understanding at the time. In it did I first encounter the Gods and from it did I conceive an awareness of the development of the concept of Gods in general.

Book Title: Odysseus

Author: Homer

First Encountered: 1975

Do note though that no book made me an atheist, which I just was brought up as by my no time for religion parents. Prayer in my home was 7pm to 11pm Monday to Sunday doing this.

My fifth book was an immaculate white book ma got given when she'd married which I'd stolen from where she keeps emergency money and jewelry. It was wrapped in velvet, placed in a box, wrapped in a cloth, locked in a suitcase in a locked cupboard in her locked bedroom from where I took it. A book thief was bad. Then a money thief took the money that had been there when I stole her immaculate white book and ma was on the rampage, thankfully, about the money, and not about her immaculate white book which I promptly returned least she find the book and I get accused of stealing the money too.

I got given my own copy in school a couple of years later and it served as my go back to book for the next three years whenever I had nothing else to read. In it did I learn the development of an idea as it shows how Yahweh evolved from some constantly angry tyrannical God to a loving merciful Jesus God, except those around me seemed to have a different understanding to mine, which I now understand is due to their believing the book without understanding it, a condition my fourth book had healed me of. If only I'd had more faith in my own ability to understand at the time!

Book Title: The King James Version of the Holy Bible

Author: Various

First Encountered: 1976

It was this book that did make me realise what "believing" meant, and showed me I wasn't one. And on reading it to the end I did become an atheist, as in "an unbeliever". My understanding of it has been a constant influence however, and now that I'm reading it again I can only thank God that I have always been an understander instead of a believer, and my prayer is that I someday become a Knower.

My sixth book (though I must admit that I'm struggling here since there is an implied order though in fact there isn't one, and since I'm limiting to ten means thousands of equally influential books are being left out), is one that follows in the vein of the two that preceeded it and helped me form a life view which has dogged me ever since. I shall refrain from a story about it because of fear of doing it an injustice but would direct here instead.

The least I can say is that it is a book that has acted as a life plan and set me of on an exploration I can only be glad I embarked on.

My seventh book made me work out how insane I actually am and was delighted to come across. I read it in what I'd describe as an insane society too so it was like looking deeper into my surroundings. I must confess though that I've taken a dishonest leap here because I've left out many years of reading and omitted lots of books to get to this one, but since I've got only a few left and have to fit this one in somehow, I have no choice. I've cheated though, I must confess, by leaving out some very important reads. But what else could you possibly expect when I have to choose 10 out of thousands of books I've read?

My eight book, and no, I have not forgotten, it's just that I had to read it first, but before I go into that, I'll diverge.

I used to keep a list of books I read, but vanity made me stop some 30 years ago since it seemed like something to boast about. However, this thread has made me go back to consider some of my readings and I do wish I'd continued with the list as I'm finding some books have had such a profound influence on me that is scary, and I can't imagine the hundreds that might continue to influence me though I can't even remember reading them. My second book is a case to note. Even though I could not remember its title or author, reading it again showed it had become part of me and I'm now considering translating it into Yoruba. Op, thanks for this thread.

I began 'reading', or rather, listening to my eight book early this month and must say that despite my vast reading of history and philosophy, this one has educated me and completely blown my mind! Who knew Africa has so much philosophy! Its a podcast, which means you can download it onto your phone and listen to it while you get on with something else. And I must say that if I had a say in the matter, it would be required reading for every African as it would eliminate quite a lot of ignorance about our philosophical heritage.

Book Title: History of Africana Philosophy

Author: Peter Adamson, Jonardon Ganeri, Chike Jeffers

I've included a snapshot of my vanity below. And please note that my last few books would be as delayed as this one as I'm struggling to decide between quite a number of books which my last two would be!
