I totally agree with OP.

Soyinka is travelling with people like that rude boy because he refused to join politics and steal Nigeria's common wealth. He once described the system of government practiced in Nigeria as Kleptocracy.

Believe in Karma at your own peril. Soyinka that once put Nigeria on the literary world map is now being publicly insulted while thieving politicians are worshiped by Nigerian youths.

I can not say it better, the insult being hauled at Wole Soyinka because of this small incident shows where we place value in the country and why we are where we are.

For me, the young man who demanded for his seat did not do anything bad at all.Yes I know it's Prof. Soyinka, the Nobel Laureate and a man in his eighties but he flagrantly disobeyed flight rules by taking a seat meant for someone else.It was the young man's prerogative to either waive his right or otherwise.Enough of this brouhaha already.

This is too long a write up for a busy person.

As for me, each time I'm going on a journey, I sit by the window. If the journey requires booking a ticket, I never forget to specifically tell the attendant to give me a sit by the window.
Once, a man, far older —sat on my sit in a luxury bus, I told him that's my sit and I'd like to sit there. He complied although not without mumbling '' I no want wahala". Other men laughed, but that was it.

If I'm on a plane, and would like to enjoy the aerial view, I'd tell my role model, Prof., that I want that sit —but in the most polite way that no one would give a second thought.
Seat not sit, go n buy brighter grammar

You are still referring to Tosin Odunfa the twitter guy that claimed he was the one. People that are cleverer than you have investigated and discovered that Tosin was just using the incident to gain fame, This shows that you are a lazy person that believes anything he sees online. Any Intellectual person be he a secondarian, a university undergraduate, a postgraduate, PHD holder or Professor will never treat Soyinka like that. It's not fear, it's respect and recognition.

Next time Wole Soyinka should sit on the seat he paid for.

The types of people, that's the type of country we build... Very disappointed in your comments. This is not disrespectful issues alone, this is arrogant and intolerable acts by the young man that eroded the sense of showing love and care to an aged man.

I'm not surprised by what our youths are turning into these days and was very disappointed by most of the comments i saw here, the Op even bore down to writing histories and who asked you "I am a leading critic of the teachings of David Oyedepo and E. A. Adeboye" and how is it related??

I always the remember day my sister went to the atm to withdraw and a very old man not looking Rich was asking for help to let him withdraw and everyone neglected him and my sister asked if he could use her position because she was the fourth person on the role and everyone told her if she let the old man withdraw, she'll become the last person on the roll and she willingly accept because the man said he has health issues and can't stand for long and there was no place to sit. To cut the story short after withdrawing he gave 10k to my sis. To the surprise of everyone he was a retired military man and the soldiers standing there people never knew they came with the man and were escort. The old man was very plead despite the conditions they gave her(my sis) she still insists the man take her position, he rained blessings on her and the man was very influential when she told our dad he knew him saying the man and his family are very influential and powerful.

Right to the topic at hand; the young man should've ignored the sit and manage vacant sit despite the flight attendance and other passengers also beg you to let him have the sit but you refused and that only was very rude, i know he paid for the sit that was to accord respect it and doesn't mean you're weak. So imagine you boarded a bus with a heavy pregnant lady by your side who is standing/hanging, you can't let her have your sit considering her condition?? Oh! no! you paid for the sit and it your right that's lack of manners. We Africans want to imitate the whites and want to be like them but it will shock you that a reasonable white guy will let bill gates have his sit because of the joy alone of sitting with someone he can learn so much from. The guy said chat and exchange contact, he even went further to say they are similar in terms of academics which is just a cover up for his shameful act. Nigerians are know to accord respect to elders and it's even our culture and tradition the way we greet our elders when i was little we were taught even if you stand up from your sit and an elder sit there, you've no right to ask him to get up and that was how i was brought up.

His actions was very wrong.

Those defending the guy? Watch them. Don't let them near your children or your children will be corrupted.
People who are successful and highly respected in the world even claimed that the guy was wrong.
It is those who don't even know where their lives are moving to, that are defending the uncouth guy. Nonsense.

Any Yoruba youths that support the scenario lack proper home training. It is not bad to fight for your right but it is very bad to disrespect elder in my own culture ( which is Yoruba).

Other tribes can say what they like, I don't care because I don't know much about their culture.

In my own culture you accord respect to old people (especially people of Wole Soyinka Age) as if they're your parents. At times you even respect them more than your parents, even Oyibo people we are emulating still have "chivalry" in their dictionary.

In this world there are rules the so called white haired sage cannot try this outside of Nigeria even a five year old would tell you that it is his seat follow the rules simply I hate sycophants imagine such nonsense those people insulting the youth cannot come and say a single word about the reign of terror in this country all they can do is to sit at home and talk like foxes who are afraid of the wolves the boy who did it has not spoken since the guy is mature for that.
A simple question. Have you been out of the country to know what happens in other parts of the world? Forget the movies you watch. I've been to Australia, Ireland and Scotland, and can tell you that there are benefits for the elderly there. You can be the third on a queue but when senior citizens approach, it is expected you give way to them. You won't tell no one that you were there first. It's called respect. If you respect the authorities in the country by moving your car out of the way when convoys are passing even though it feels right to ply the route ahead of them as you were there first, then it won't cost you anything to let some things go when it comes to someone elderly.

A Nigerian professor that feels so entitled by sitting on someone's else legitimately assigned seat and some people are now casting aspersions on the legitimate owner of the stolen seat by prof for simply complying with the seating arrangement?

What exactly is the major malfunction of the mental operating system of most Nigerians?

If prof had respected himself by sitting on his designated seat, there wouldn't have been an issue but he invaded someone's personal space and still play the victim, yet some people still justify this oppressive act by the prof.

Re: Soyinka: Much Ado About Plane Seats By Deji Yesufu by aksule(m): 6:44pm On Jun 26, 2019
Let's try to reason deeply. There are rules and regulations. I would have expect us to show our youths the penchant to observe rules. What about if our dear prof sat on his seat and calmly asked the youth for swapping of seats.

The boy might NEVER achieve 1/10 of what WS has achieved

He has only achieved window seat.
