The Old Way v The New Way

Back in the days (prior to 2007), publishing wasn't a business open to everyone. If you wanted to publish a book, you had to:

1. Write the book (a manuscript)
2. Hire an agent to market your manuscript to publishing houses (E.g Penguin Random House, Wiley etc.)
3. The publishing company will then evaluate your manuscript to see if it has potential (i.e. is there a demand for the subject matter, is it likely to sell well, do they have in-house technical know-how and resources to market the book etc.)
4. If they like your manuscript, they communicate this to you (via your agent) and then you will be offered a contract stipulating who does what and who gets what share of the money made etc.
5. The author then has to commit to also do his or her own share of the marketing (social media shout out, book tours etc)
6. You earn maybe 10-20% royalty if you're lucky

all these..and yet it's very difficult to get a book deal from publishers.

....in comes Amazon to blow the market wide open and level the playing field

Since Amazon launched the Kindle Direct Publishing platform back in 2007, it completely disrupted the market and eliminated the middle man (i.e. the agent), making it possible for just about anybody to become a published author

With the new publishing model pioneered by Amazon:

1. You no longer need to hire an agent
2. You no longer need a publishing house to publish your book
3. You simply upload your manuscript on Amazon, set the price and publish it
4. You can earn as much as 70% royalty on every book sale
5. You have more control (You design your cover the way you want it, you market your book the way you want it)
6. You don't even have to print any of the books to sell (Amazon paperback book formats are sold on a print-on-demand business model where the books are printed and shipped to customers immediately they pay for it on Amazon. This means you do not have to hold inventory of those books in your house hoping that they sell out so you can recover your investment)

..most importantly, you can realise your dream of becoming a published author. Play your cards right and you can even become a best-selling author (I've done that many times and I can tell you it's not that difficult)

Benefits of being a published/bestselling author

1. You have more authority and this can be transferred to your business (imagine being the best selling author of a health and fitness book, what will that do to your reputation as a health consultant? amazing things. You'll be able to command premium prices for your services)

2. Your books sell more when people know they're buying from a best selling author

3. You're able to work with businesses (SMEs, Big corporations etc.) to help them boost their bottom line (As an authority figure, they'll be able to trust your knowledge and experience)

Do this kindle publishing business the right way and you will be well on your way to achieving financial freedom.

It's incredible so many people still do not know this business is even possible..most still think you need a publishing house to become a published author.

Take advantage of this incredible opportunity today!

How Is A Publishing Business Better Than A Traditional Brick-And-Mortar Business?

Traditional Business

1. Your business/shop is tied to a certain location (e.g. Ikorodu Lagos). This means to scale you have to set up as many shops in as many different locations as possible. Even then, scaling up your business will be very capital intensive as more and more shops will be needed

With an online publishing business: your asset is for sale to the entire world 24/7

2. You have a lot of overhead costs (e.g cost of running the generator, employee salary etc.)

With an online publishing business: you don't need employees. You can just outsource tasks to virtual assistants all over the world on a contract basis.

3. You rely on the integrity of your workers to keep your business running profitably when you're not around (some sales assistants even steal from you)

With an online publishing business: you can run your business from the comfort of your home or anywhere in the world as long as you have your laptop and access to internet

4. You do not have time freedom. If you're a dentist running a dental care centre, you don't earn if you're sick and unable to work

With an online publishing business: your assets (books) continue to earn money for you regardless of whether you're there or not. It's passive income

Imagine running a barbing saloon

- You pay rent
- You pay for electricity
- You pay for fuel to power your generator
- You pay to purchase work tools and equipment (seats, clippers, mirror, hair treatment chemicals etc.)
- You have to be there to cut peoples hair (or pay someone to be there to do it)
- You have a limit on how many people's hair you can physically cut in a day
- To scale up you need more seats and eventually more shops (sinking in a lot more money)

Compare that to running an online business that eliminates most of the above expenses.

Can you now see how easy it is to scale up your earnings with an online business?

Don't just work hard, work smart. All business models are not created equal. Some are inherently more powerful than others

About Kindle Unlimited

Kindle Unlimited is a subscription that allows an Amazon customer (who is an avid reader) to access a large selection of titles from the Kindle Store.

With a Kindle Unlimited subscription, you have access to over one million titles in the Kindle Store, including books, audiobooks, and magazines. Using your Amazon account, you can browse and borrow up to ten titles and access them from any Amazon device or Kindle reading app, even while travelling. There are no due dates. Titles in the Kindle Unlimited catalogue can change at any time.

If you enrol your book in the kindle unlimited program, Amazon customers can choose to buy your book outright or borrow it. When they borrow it, you earn a royalty based on the number of pages they read.

Only a few customers (less than 20%) who purchase a book manage to read it from beginning to end so having a lot of pages alone won't cut it. You have to find clever ways to make your book engaging and fun to encourage customers to continue reading. It's also important this strategy does not violate Amazon's terms of service otherwise you'll be in trouble. If you have a copy of the blueprint, refer to strategy #9 and make sure you incorporate it in your book before you publish it.

You don't have to neglect earnings from KENP and leave money on the table.

Leaders Are Readers

I try to read at least one business book per month.

- The more you read, the more you learn
- The more you learn, the more you understand about the world of business/finance
- The more you understand, the more likely you are to be a good steward for your money

You'll develop the financial savvy needed to differentiate good business opportunities from the bad ones.

Kindle Countdown Deals

Kindle Countdown Deals is a KDP Select benefit that lets authors, no matter where you're located, run limited-time discount promotions for your books that are available on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. Customers will see both the regular price and the promotional price on the book's detail page, as well as a countdown clock showing how much time is left at the promotional price. You'll also continue to earn your selected royalty rate on each sale during the promotion.

Note: If you're located in a territory not supported to purchase from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk, you may not see your Kindle Countdown Deals promotion listed on your book's detail page as it's only available to customers who can purchase from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk.

Benefits of Kindle Countdown Deals

1. They're time-based. Not only does this give you more control over how long your book is discounted, but the time remaining for the promotion is visible to customers to increase excitement for the price discount.

2. Customers see the regular price. It's easy for customers to see the great deal they're getting, as the regular price is included on the book's detail page, right beside the promotional price.

3. Royalty rate is retained at lower prices. You will earn royalties based on your regular royalty rate and the promotional price. As a result, if you are using the 70% royalty option, you'll earn 70% even if the price is below $2.99. (As per the KDP Pricing Page, regular delivery costs apply.)

4. There's a dedicated website. Customers can discover active Kindle Countdown Deals.

5. You can monitor performance in real time. Your KDP report will display sales and royalties at each price discount side-by-side with pre-promotion performance.

Sales Ranking

Best Seller and Category Ranks are based on customer activity - sales and borrows - of your book relative to the activity of other books. A book ranking #1 in Mystery & Thrillers is the book with the most activity in Amazon's Mystery & Thrillers category. Books can appear in up to three categories. The book's rank in each category will show under the Product Details section. Activities that may not be an accurate reflection of customer demand, including promotional Amazon Giveaway sales and purchases that are later returned, are not counted towards sales rank.

Rankings are updated hourly but may take 24-48 hours to appear. Rankings reflect recent and historical activity, with recent activity weighted more heavily. Rankings are relative, so your sales rank can change even when your book's level of activity stays the same. For example, even if your book's level of activity stays the same, your rank may improve if other books see a decrease in activity, or your rank may drop if other books see an increase in activity.

When Amazon calculate Best Sellers Rank, they consider the entire history of a book's activity. Monitoring your book's Amazon sales rank may be helpful in gaining general insight into the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns and other initiatives to drive book activity, but it is not an accurate way to track your book's activity or compare its activity in relation to books in other categories.

The ranking for books with consistent activity histories that have been available on Amazon for a long time may fluctuate less than the ranking of new books, or books whose histories aren't as stable. One sale of a very popular book may not influence its rank much at all, but one sale of a lower volume book may significantly improve that book's rank.

Note: Each available format of your book (eBook, paperback) has its own independent Amazon Best Sellers Rank.

Trademark Search

So you've followed the steps laid down in the Kindle Blueprint and done your keyword research, you found a very profitable and in-demand keyword you want to publish your book under, you're so excited and can't wait to get the book written - not so fast. You need to check that the keyword isn't trademark protected.

This is one of the mistakes beginners make. They publish a book under a keyword that is trademark protected and end up getting their KDP account terminated. You can avoid this by doing a basic trademark search to ensure there is no restriction on that keyword being used on any publication (in this case, book)

To do this, you simply follow the below steps.

1. Go to: http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=tess&state=4810:85kr9l.1.1
2. Click on "Basic Word Mark Search"
3. Search the keyword you're interested in (I've used play station as an example)
4. Check the "live" trademarks to see if you're prohibited from using that term in "books"

As you can see, you're not allowed to have the term "play station" in any book (without permission from the trademark owner). Doing such will open your KDP Account to the risk of getting terminated.

The Kindle Blueprint expands more on this topic and also shows you other things you need to look out for in order to protect your publishing business and investments.

Royalties in Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Owners' Lending Library

You're eligible for royalty payment from Kindle Unlimited (KU, or Abonnement Kindle in France) and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library (KOLL) for pages an individual customer reads in your book for the first time.

A customer can read your book as many times as they like, but Amazon will only pay you for the number of pages read the first time the customer reads them. It may take months for customers to read pages in your book, but no matter how long it takes, Amazon will still pay you once it happens. This is true even if your KDP Select enrollment period has expired, and you choose not to re-enroll.

To determine a book's page count in a way that works across genres, devices, and display settings, Amazon developed the Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count (KENPC). KENPC is calculated using standard formatting settings (font, line height, line spacing, etc.). They use KENPC to measure the number of pages customers read in your book, starting with the Start Reading Location (SRL) to the end of your book. Amazon typically sets SRL at chapter 1 so readers can start reading the core content of your book as soon as they open it. Non-text elements within books including images, charts and graphs will count toward a book’s KENPC.

KENPC v3.0

Amazon released KENPC v3.0 to improve the way they measure how many pages of each book Kindle Unlimited and KOLL customers read. These changes continue to improve the program and reward authors whose books are being borrowed and read the most by customers.

The KENPC v3.0 update applies uniformly to all KDP Select books and all versions of those books. Regardless of which version a customer may be reading, all future royalties will be paid using KENPC v3.0. If a customer previously borrowed your book and is still reading it, any new pages read will be based on KENPC v3.0.

Authors are able to earn a maximum of 3,000 Kindle Edition Normalized Pages (KENPs) read per title per customer. This means that each time your book is borrowed and read, you will receive credit for up to 3,000 pages.

Your book's KENPC

You can see your book's KENPC v3.0 listed on the "Promote and Advertise" page in your Bookshelf, and you can also see total pages read on your Sales Dashboard report. Because it's based on default settings, KENPC v3.0 may vary from page counts listed on your Amazon detail page, which are derived from other sources.

Cashflow Management

In order to thrive in business, this is one of the skills you'll need to learn. When you start your publishing journey, it's important you familiarize yourself with the different payment cycles.

1. KDP pays every 60 days (meaning that royalties earned in January are paid in March ending)
2. ACX pays every 30 days (meaning that royalties earned in January are paid in February ending)

Of course, you'll only feel this lag as a beginner because, after 2 months in this business, you'll begin to receive payments from KDP and ACX every month (even though the payment from KDP will be royalties earned 2 months prior).

So, if you're investing money in this business, know beforehand when you can expect to get any payment.

Sales Update

July sales have been going good so far. Only 8 days into the month and I have surpassed $1000 in paperback sales alone. Total estimated sales for July (ebook, paperback, kenp and audiobook) has surpassed $2000. At this pace, I'm on target for another $9000+ month.

Total Earnings to date (in 2019): $60,000+ (N21.6 million)

If I can build up my publishing empire to this scale in less than 3 years, you can do it too (if not faster). The blueprint is there to guide you.

Shiny Object Syndrome

At its core, shiny object syndrome (SOS) is a disease of distraction, and it affects entrepreneurs.

It’s called shiny object syndrome because it’s the entrepreneurial equivalent of a small child chasing after shiny objects. Once they get there and see what the object is, they immediately lose interest and start chasing the next thing. For entrepreneurs, rather than literal shiny objects, it may be business opportunities, marketing strategies etc.

You get excited by a business opportunity, you get started and midway through it, you've already lost interest and set your eyes on the next thing that's likely to make money. As a result, you don't focus on something long enough to start reaping the rewards.

When I started my entrepreneurial journey, I had the same problem. I wanted to do:

- Kindle Publishing
- Affiliate Marketing
- Dropshipping
- Domain Flipping
- Blogging
- Amazon FBA etc.

I wanted to do them all.

I struggled to make any meaningful progress and, worse, I didn't know what I was doing wrong.

It wasn't until I heard the concept of Shiny Object Syndrome from a mentor that I realised I was spreading myself too thin and diluting my efforts. The power of focus is incredible.

Imagine the suns ray shining down on planet earth, not much damage is done because it's fairly spread out. However, Imagine using a mirror to focus part of the suns ray on a singular point (say on a piece of paper), sooner or later that paper will be set ablaze because of the sun's immense laser-like focus on it. The incredible energy being concentrated on that paper

In the same vein, my business took off when I cast aside every other business I was doing and decided to LASER FOCUS exclusively on publishing. I saw that publishing worked well for others and I decided they didn't have 2 heads. If it worked for them, It can also work for me.

..no more being Jack of all trade and master of none

It takes about 10,000 hours of doing something consistently in order to become a master at it.

I decided to be disciplined and not get distracted by any other make money online opportunity that looked tantalizing. Things changed for the better. I started paying more attention to detail and making improvements that allowed me to scale. I started setting monthly goals and aiming to beat prior month's goals.

I made my mind to become a master at non-fiction publishing.

A few years on (though am not a master yet), I'm happy with the progress made so far. It's been worth it

I encourage you to do the same. Choose one business opportunity you believe in and give it your absolute best..ignore the noise

However what do you think about Amazon FBA . Do people earn well from it?

I've never done Amazon FBA (although I studied it a lot at some point when I wanted to get into it) so I don't really have any personal experience to lend credibly advise. That being said, of course, there are a lot of people that do well with it..just like a lot of people do very well with other businesses (e.g. blogging, Affiliate Marketing etc.). If you focus, know what you're doing and apply yourself well to it, there's no reason why you won't find success.

From what I gathered during my research (of Amazon FBA), It requires a lot more capital to get started with private label Amazon FBA

- Sourcing products from China
- Shipping them to the Amazon Fulfilment centre
- Launching them on Amazon
- Running Ads
- Optimizing your listing
- Getting quality pictures for your listings
- Cost of market research softwares (e.g viral launch, jungle scout etc.)
- Cost of purchasing a course to guide you through all this

Everything came out to $2000+

It was also a lot more tasking from a cashflow management perspective...It just wasn't worth it for me in the end.

Made $26.5 from Page Reads Alone Yesterday

So yesterday, I came very close to breaking a long-standing KENP record I've had since December 9, 2018, when I got a page reads of 6821 (yes lol, I keep an excel spreadsheet record of EVERYTHING).

For the past 7 months, I've been trying to break that record but to no avail.

...until I got very close yesterday (which got me very excited)

Yesterday's page read total was 6640 which using a conservative royalty rate of $0.004/page came out to a royalty of $26.56 (N9500). For fiction, this may be very unimpressive BUT considering I'm exclusively in non-fiction publishing, this is a pretty high number.

On the other hand, the amount earned may not look like a lot, but to me, every single dollar counts.

To eventually start earning a lot of money from your publishing business, you need to pay attention to OPTIMIZATION

Every single part of your publishing should be optimized to perform (kindle royalties, paperback royalties, audiobook royalties, KENP royalties etc.). Absolutely nothing should be left to chance

Every month, I consistently make $250+ in page reads royalty (sometimes as high as $500). When everyone is blindly ignoring this concept of optimization, a savvy publisher (which you are if you're reading this) will double down on it.

The kindle Blueprint expands on strategies you can use to squeeze the last drop of dollars from every single aspect of your book. A dollar saved is a dollar earned which can then be reinvested to help feed the flame of expansion.

Mastery Comes With Experience

No matter how long you've been in this business, you can't beat that feeling of excitement that overwhelms you when you find a keyword that's profitable (in theory) and you know you have the experience and know-how required to pull it off and make sure your book will also be profitable. That's something no one can take away from you.

It's the reward for consistently publishing, trying new things, succeeding, sometimes failing, and learning from your mistakes. Over time, you develop a natural instinct for what works and what doesn't. To everyone else, everything you touch seems to turn to Gold - when in reality, your success rate has increased simply because you've developed mastery of your craft.

Avoidable Mistakes

When I talk about doing all you can to curtail silly, avoidable mistakes, it looks like I'm sounding like a broken record. Earlier today, I was doing keyword research and bumped into a book that was crushed with negative reviews. I delved in to understand what went wrong and low and behold below are some of the reviews on the book.

Complaints about grammatical errors, typos, book-length etc

Bad Quality Book > Maybe some initial Sales > Negative Reviews Start Coming > Sales Deteriorate > Book Ranking Suffers > Poor Book Visibility > eventually no Sales (A negative feedback loop)

Good Quality Books > Little or No negative Reviews > Good Sales > Better Ranking > More Visibility > More Sales etc. ( a positive feedback loop)

This is why I always stress investing in a high quality book..if you want something that'll stand the test of time.

Learn from this persons mistake

The Importance Of An Email List

In addition to plenty of strategies I enumerate in the Kindle Blueprint, I also touch on ways to take advantage of your email list. One of which is benefiting from discount days on Amazon like Prime Day (which is today), Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Boxing Day, Christmas Day etc.

If you actually bothered to build an email list, you would have been in a position to monetize these discount days by emailing your list and telling them your books are on discount and they should go and purchase (which a hyperlink leading them to your books on Amazon).

Learn how to take full advantage of opportunities like these. It's essentially more sales, better ranking and more income for you.

How To Raise Money For Publishing

If you're a complete newbie and you're interested in building your publishing empire but you don't have the money to get started, doing the below can help.

1. Freelancing

You can open an account on Fiverr and render services in exchange for payment. You could help people prepare their CV, proofread peoples work, write web/blog articles, design book covers etc. The list is pretty much endless. Aim to deliver so much value to your clients that they will be more than happy to give you a good review which will help boost your credibility and get more clients.

2. Selling old books/gadgets etc

If you have any old gadget lying around the house, you could sell it and save up the money

3. Become a tutor

If you're good in any subject, you can start a small tutorial business where people come to your house to learn and in exchange, they pay a monthly fee. You can also tutor people on how to do their makeup, how to bake etc.

4. Online Paid Surveys

You can perhaps participate in online paid surveys where you earn money for helping companies conduct surveys. These companies get to learn about ways to improve their products etc and you get paid money

This is not an exhaustive list. You just have to be creative and find out ways to earn money and save enough to then invest into a much more scalable business like publishing

Made $644.82 (N232,135) Yesterday

Yesterday, I broke my previous one-day earnings record of $627.63 by 2.7%. This came from ebook, paperback, audiobook and KENP combined. Paperback sales have been going through the roof this month and it's not even Q4 yet (October, November, December) when sales typically go crazy. My goal this year is to have a $20,000 month before Dec 31, 2019 and it's looking promising..I'm still way off that target but it's not impossible. I just need to keep publishing more and more high-quality books.

To hit my goal, I need to be averaging $667/day...I know which books are performing really well for me and how much volume they're doing per month, It's just a question of getting more of those kinds of books out in time for Q4.

How are your sales going? keep at it
