Northerners practice fundamentalist, Wahaabi strain of Islam, the same practiced in places like Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan etc.

Dubai is quite a liberal and open society , both in terms of personal liberty and codes of business practice. You can drink alcohol, stroll down the street with your girlfriend etc and nobody will bother you. Banks in Dubai practice conventional banking far more than islamic banking and they charge interests just like any banking industry anywhere else in the world.

You simply cannot compare Northern Nigeria with Dubai.

General0847:

You mean the same religion that is practiced in developed Dubai?
Religion has nothing to do with this, Nigeria as a whole is just one giant ghetto. What about the poor state of roads, health care and electricity, will you blame that on religion too? Mkpi

Any mooroon or Dunce knows all of Northern Nigerian Problem, however only reasonable responsible people would come up with workeable solution and not lament all the time.. Aisha Buhari laments.. fools hail her, Sanusi laments fools hail her, now El rufai is lamenting and same fools hail him, how about.coming.up with workeable solutions?

As someone with equal family from both North and Southwest, growing up in Soutuwest and visiting north quite often, i can boldly say it that the worst southwestern Governor is better than the Best Northern Governor..

I'll chronicle progression of Tinubu-Fashola, Ajimobi-Makinde SW, vis a vis Audu-Idris-Bello, and Makarfi-Elrufai North..

Financially, owing to the numbers of Local Goverments Northern States has, for the same population and land mass of SouthWest, Northern States earn atleast 2 to 3 times what Southwestern State earns.

But Compare what they earn side by side with developmental project?

How many tertiary instituition both private and public does Kaduna, Kano, and Katsina has? Compared to Lagos Ogun and Oyo.

In terms of Mass Transport, which Northern State has a functional BRT or light rail construction ungoing at 2019 or even atall atall Ajumose busses which of their state has?

For the first time in a long while you have made a lot of sense. Kudos

Divide and Rule. Continue! Blind bigots will rather ignore the root cause of the problem which is LEADERSHIP, rather spreading hate everywhere.

How people with overwhelming ignorance invaded the thread to air their hatred about the religion of Islam, without even gleaning through the country's recent history to understand the genesis of our problem.

The Almajiri system before the coming of the British ensured all children were adequately educated, fed, sheltered and in close proximity with their parents. There were education inspectors who reported the activities of the school to the Emirs. The system was jointly sponsored by the Emirs, the state (tax) and parents. The society was orderly. Then come the British with their gun and manical hatred distabilized the system, killed the Emirs and abolished the funding and sabotage the entire system. The same British since the nation's "independence" continuously Balkanize the country.

The present Almajiri system operated justifiably should be abolished and entirely remodelled as it is clearly outlived it's usefulness and against all what Islam preached against: half-baked educstion, Begging, exploitation etc. The only people benefitting from the malaise today are the so-called elites who want to win votes.

Yet people will rather sit in the comfort of their house and type the trash they want. It is strange that some people still feel somehow Superior because of some perceived education— education that has not transformed into meaningful development for the country.

The country has one of the worst HDIs in the world, some of the most polluted cities without decent infrastructures to support good living. The "educateds" will rather live in affluent places with no good road, highly prone to flood for the purpose of claiming "levels" Yet the half baked literates and blind bigots whom only take pride in their ability to speak "Behind" English as their mark of literacy will rather comfort themselves on a perceived sense of superiority. Educated indeed!

The Northern leaders are definately as wicked and heartless as their southern counterpart. The whole country is a garbage dump. Poor leadership,
Baby Factories, Kidnapping, Ritual killings, Jingle Justice, Nepotism, Rape, Child exploitation is rife in various part of the country.

Nigeria is hell for everyone and will still continue to frustrate everybody until we sit up and address the root causes, until then. Enjoy the ride!

Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai has said that, Nigeria consists of two countries: a developing South, and a backward, less educated and unhealthy North, with the highest number of poor people in the world.

[. But, if we segregate those statistics across states and zones, you will see that in terms of human development indicators, Nigeria consists of two countries; there is a backward, less educated and unhealthy northern Nigeria and a developing, largely educated and healthy southern Nigeria. [/b]

“We have to speak the truth to ourselves and ask why is it that northern Nigeria has development indicators similar to Afganistan, a country still at war?
“We have the largest number of poor people in the world, most of them in northern Nigeria. Nigeria also has the largest number of out-of-school children, virtually all of them in Northern Nigeria.

In addition, our demographic superiority gives us a very powerful tool to negotiate in politics. And that is something we should be proud of, and we should preserve. So, we have every reason to unite and not be divided.

El-Rufai is just sounding glamorous but stupid. How can you complain of population explosion and in another breath seek to preserve it?
That's why the north will never change. Pray tell, who does the demographic benefit? The masses or the elites? The so-called demographic is the only route to power and therefore it must be maintained even if it is inimical to development

Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai has said that, Nigeria consists of two countries: a developing South, and a backward, less educated and unhealthy North, with the highest number of poor people in the world.
El-Rufai equally lamented that the northern region has development indicators similar to that of Afganistan, a country at war.

Speaking in Kaduna on Saturday at the Northern Youth Summit organised by Northern Hibiscus, an NGO, El-Rufai however said that the problems of the region must be addressed collectively as a group of 19 northern states governors, not as individual states.
El-Rufai said the summit whose theme was “Awakening the Arewa Spirit,” was very timely, adding that “when we talk about awakening the spirit, it means the spirit is either sleeping or dead. Therefore, this summit is very important, just like our keynote address speaker has said.

“But, looking at the statistics, Nigeria appears to be a middle-income country. But, if we segregate those statistics across states and zones, you will see that in terms of human development indicators, Nigeria consists of two countries; there is a backward, less educated and unhealthy northern Nigeria and a developing, largely educated and healthy southern Nigeria.

“Northern Nigeria has become the centre of drug abuse, gender violence, banditry, kidnapping and terrorism. We have also been associated with high divorce rate and breakdown of families. These are the challenges that confront us. This is the naked truth that we have to tell ourselves.

“We must, therefore, as leaders at all levels have a conversation about the way forward for our part of the country. Because increasingly, as many of you must have seen on social media, we are being considered as the parasite of the federal economy, even though, that is not entirely true. Because northern Nigeria still feeds the nation. The richest businessman in Nigeria is still Aliko Dangote, not someone from southern Nigeria, thank God for that.

“So, we still have a lot to be proud of. We should be proud of our culture and tradition, as well as unity. You hardly can find someone from northern Nigeria convicted of 419 or being aYahoo boy. That is something we should be proud of.

“We are generally considered to be more honest and less corrupt than other Nigerians. That is something we should be proud of. In addition, our demographic superiority gives us a very powerful tool to negotiate in politics. And that is something we should be proud of, and we should preserve. So, we have every reason to unite and not be divided.

“I, therefore, call on you the youth; you account for 80 per cent of the northern population and the future of this region lies in your hands, not in the hands of Dinosaurs like me. I’m 59 and among the oldest five per cent of the northern population. I shouldn’t even be governor; I should have been governor ten years ago. But ‘na condition make crayfish bend,’ so we are here.
“But, why are we here? In my view, we are here to prepare the next generation of leaders. That is why the agenda for this summit is very important. So, you should take the panel discussions very seriously and come up with very clear and implementable decisions that you will circulate to all of us elected to lead in northern Nigeria.

“I urge Northern Hibiscus to send recommendations from this summit to the Chairman of northern state governors’ forum. We have to do something about the situation of northern Nigeria and we must do so as a group of 19 governors, not individual state governors.” El-Rufai said.

Also speaking, the sponsor of the event and immediate past Chairman of House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Abdulmumini Jibrin said, while the North was in dire situation, the region has not lost everything. “There is growth everywhere and so many leaders have emerged.”

Jibrin who analysed the need to reawaken the Arewa spirit on sociocultural, economic and political spheres, said family unit remains the bigger challenge faced in the region as it contributes to high rate of divorce, late marriages, drug abuse and destitution.

Looking at the economic aspect, he noted the need for job and wealth creation to build businesses, understanding competition, marketing and funding in entrepreneurship.
He said there is little or no money available at commercial banks to loan small and medium enterprises because government borrows an average of N1 trillion annually with N600 billion to N700 billion interest from first line charge.

The lawmaker called for role models across board, adding that “we have to mould leaders, we have to create ourselves into leaders,” he said.

In her opening remarks, founder of Northern Hibiscus Initiative, Aisha Falke, said the summit was organised to examine the numerous challenges of the North, with a view to finding lasting solutions to them.

She also disclosed that, Northern Hibiscus had also taken the bull by the horn with a 16-year action to empower the youths with useful skills, especially those who are not privileged to have formal education.

You can continue lie to those that never been to North, North have the highest numbers of uneducated people they why president come from North? why most of Nigerian high court justice are from North? why all security heads are from North? why all the major economic sector managements are from North? why the overall National resources director is from North? why is north always in control of everything in Nigeria even only the north made amendment of Nigeria constitution. how can illiterates do all this. that's how you people samples your self to the world to attract sympathy whereby you know you lie.

all the infrastructures in the northern cities are not any where in the south from police academy to military schools. the railways, international airports, Dry sea port in Kaduna, Baru dry sea port going on in Niger state, Giant rice mill in Kaduna set up by federal government and the target market is south while the workers are from North, what of refinery propose to build that will serve katsina state and Niger republic and railway propose for easy convening of goods from Kaduna to Niger republic. most of OBJ project is at North, most of GEJ project is at North, Buhari also make is clear that is only the north that need government presence. he always table lake chad issue whenever he went for economic submit.

when North say they are illiterates i see it as a ploy to deceive the world to attract the world sympathy. why can't they attract world sympathy when BBC, CNN, AJEZERA name it all international media agency are from North, including BBC journalist in entire southerns Nigeria. they never report Intimidation, rape, land grabs and evil activities of their northern kidsmen to their hire media office.

your proud no northern youth have ever jail for 419 issue, how can Northern youth be a fraudster when his senior brother manages EFCC, DSS and other security heads whom their agenda is to tarnish and kill the southern youths whom escape poverty and killings that organize by the Norths to make sure that the southerners youths never breath air. How many southerners have being accuse or rape, murder, land grabbing and damaging the living source of their host community, is only northern youths that can be accused for rape and others evil yet their brother in power over look it. If EFCC is working accordingly they should have arrest the fulanis that grabs people land because that's stealing, fraud, taken by force but they look the other way fighting anyone with computer and forget that no business succeed in this generation without doing with internet.

North can deceive some people but not everyone. who know what you and your backward champion and democracy killer president is planing this time and looking for best way to say it. calling your new plan against southern Nigerian awakening of arewa spirit may not sound well, look for a better name to make it look acceptable to southern foolish politicians to support the new fulanization agenda. the name of the team is not clear to intention behind it, we are waiting.

when they plan evil way to conquer they use tag 19 norther state, when they archive their dream, Southern Kaduna, some part of Bornu mostly the son's of Elkanami, entire Jos, Nupes, entire Benue, some part of Adamawa, Nasarawa and Kogi will be call BANZA BOKWEI meaning seven bastards that claim to be north while they are not. that's why they send Boko-Haram to make sure Bornu come under their control so the idigen remain slave. the same way they want to use RUGA settlement to complete the same tax to southern Nigeria.

their intention is to shift the war they create in the north to south and make peace rain in the north, so everyone will now move to Norther side and convert to Muslim by force or return to your region and be kill or become Muslim and be a slave because their mission is not that you convert to Muslim but to make you slave in your ancestral home. we will resist all their agenda with fire to fire or water to water.

El-Rufus is painting the norther senerio as if it was the southern Nigeria that caused the backwardness north is experiencing. He should also remember that for the last 59 years of Nigeria's independence, the northern region has produced 9 leaders as head of state or President with a total of 43 years rule and southern region with 3 leader and 16 years rules.

This northern folks should check inward for the canckerworm eating deep the developmental fabric of the north and not to put the blame of theor backwardness at the door step of the south.

The north rejected formal education at the early stage, now crying foul
They rejected immunization until it was too late for them
They rejected progressive ideologies seeing them as anti-islamic but settled for conservatives

North is the cause of her own misfortunes.

I can say Gov. El-rufai has spoken mere fallacy words because telling us by segregation from his speech that we have two Nigerians 'Northern states as poor and undeveloped and southern states as developed'. My question goes to him which among the geo-political zones has hold seat of power in this country since inception of be it Civilian or Military government, despite many northerners hacking to there usual say ' they are born to rule'. Now what is Mr. El-rufai claims that Northern states are backwards in development. As Southerners contributed to poor of development of Northern states? We knew his pretend even though when he was elected has minister under former president obasanjo's regime that purely is sentiment is not always against with Southerners. Let read through and learnt a lesson whenever he speak in any public lecture. Your own people as in northerns have contributed immensely to their own failure, Imagine what former president Jonathan did to almajiri to built schools for them. Have they make use of the schools for learning rather they goes to farms or take their animals out for grazing while they suppose to be in school. the down-fall of northerner states fell in you leaders hand which you leading now. Rather than given/introducing them to hand work to learnt, many of them turnout to be beggars. Your outrightly statement of categorizing Nigeria has a nation to be' Northern states poor / underdeveloped/developing & Southern states as developed' is barbaric and uncalled for Mr El-rufai as seen to be understatement.

DrLikita12:
Northern leaders always show up to/organize fancy summits to repeat the same thing over and over again yet many of them are unwilling to provide any solutions. Some are even more interested in adding to the problems.
They will lament and say we need population control yet the same people will go and organize mass weddings (then turn around and complain about divorce rates) when that money can be channeled somewhere more productive; they will sponsor pilgrimage but not education; they will complain about VVF but refuse to legally protect female children. They are complaining about illiteracy but how many of them have any plans for almajiri children? The ones that even need to be here are no where to be found. Who is fooling who?
It's good for us to know our problems but it's more important for us to solve them. Repeating the same problems (and more every few years) will not take us anywhere. The North (and the core North in particular) is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Is that not folly? Before Boko Haram there was the Maitatsine sect. After Boko Haram there will be another one because there is a steady supply of iliterate, ignorant young people whose leaders are only interested in being re-elected. Meanwhile we'll probably have another summit in another few months reminding us of the exact same problems without providing any solutions.
quite constructive.... you wrote well

This is what I call ", brilliant stupidity"
Question 1 is whose fault is it?
Question 2: what lead to it?
Question 3: is there a solution?
Question 4 , what are we doing about it?
Question 5 :are we ready to adjust.?

The problem of the North is that they will always refuse to handle question 4 and 5?

So Mr or gov El-rufai,
When you have finish ur symposium, go back to your govt house or houses and continue doing what you have have been doing.
By next year or next 10 years " Politically reduced" emir SLS will come back to repeat what you have just mentioned for the Media.

Lest hope by then we would have divided to 2 different distinct countries.

You are quite ignorant, google up stories of couples arrested for kissing or cuddling in public or stories of people who have been arrested for drinking in public.
I have first hand experience cos i lived there for over a year. Educate yourself.
Is Nigeria underdeveloped because of religion? Don't be deceived the entire Nigeria is not developed. Lagos and Abuja won't make top 5 most developed in Africa because they lack basic infrastructure.

This is the first time el rufai made a sensible analysis about the north infact when I was told the only development that can benefit the north 90% is inland sea port,I smh in pity and I told myself that northerners have a lot to do to move forward.
