The Oyo State Police Command on Wednesday burnt no fewer than 115 bags of Indian hemp seized from drug peddlers.

The Indian hemp, DAILY POST gathered was intercepted along Koko Market road in Sando village area of the state.

Officer-In-Charge of Surveillance, State CID, Iyaganku, Mr Maku Aderemi, while addressing journalists at a refuse dumping site in Lapite, Moniya area of Ibadan, said that the 115 bags of the substance suspected to be Indian hemp were intercepted by his officers in Ayete on April 6 at about 1:15 am.

Aderemi said the drugs were intercepted based on the information received by the officers and the officers immediately moved to the area.

“Before we got to the scene the owner of the Indian hemp has escaped and the product was transported to the office.

“Investigation is still ongoing in order to apprehend the owner of the Indian hemp,” Aderemi said.

He further said that a court order to destroy the Indian hemp has been obtained which was why the burning of the substance was carried out.

Aderemi said that the burning would be served as a deterrent to other drug peddlers that are in the habit of selling the substance that it was against the law and not good to the health.

Also speaking, a Pharmacist, Mr. Hamidu Adediran, said that there would be a problem when raw hard drugs like this got to the society.

Adediran said the society has gotten more than enough problem in controlling the menace of drug abuse because most crimes like kidnapping, armed robbery among others are committed when people are on drugs.

“All hand must be on deck to make sure that this type of exercise is done regularly to curb hard drugs from getting into the hands of wrong users.”
