*THE RIGHT WAY TO DRINK APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (ACV) & 5 BENEFITS OF HAVING IT BEFORE BEDTIME*

Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV is touted as a powerful weight loss tool and that's what has made it extremely popular too. Not only that, the fermented juice has been used in the culinary world and for medicinal purposes for ages. It helps in curing all kinds of diseases like type 2 diabetes, eczema and even high cholesterol. Mostly, people drink ACV in the morning but having the acidic juice in a particular way at night before going to bed can be beneficial for your health in several ways.

There are different ways to have ACV, you can mix it in honey or with lemon. But when drinking it at night, keep it simple. Just add a teaspoon of ACV in a glass of water, preferably warm water, mix it well and have it before going to bed. You can swap your normal water at night with this concoction and see the benefits of doing so within a few days. It can help you in five different ways.

01/5 Helps you lose I eight

Several studies suggest that ACV may help to burn belly fat when you are on a mission to lose weight. The acetic acid in vinegar may reduce fat storage, suppress appetite, slow digestion and increase the fat-burning process. You should never have ACV in concentrated form as it can lead to nausea, worsen acid reflux and cause tooth enamel erosion.

02/5 Lowers blood sugar level

For those suffering from the problem of diabetes, regular intake of ACV can be quite helpful. The fermented juice may slow down the emptying of your stomach and prevent spikes in the blood sugar level. ACV consumption has also been proven beneficial in increasing insulin sensitivity. Drinking that concoction particularly at night can be more beneficial than having it any other time of the day.

03/5 Prevents bad breath in the morning

Having bad breath can be embarrassing, but it is hard to evade it. Even if you brush your teeth properly before going to bed at night the chances are that your breath might stink in the morning. An easy solution to this everyday problem can be ACV. Apple cider vinegar kills bacteria and ensures healthy oral hygiene.

04/5 Can ease digestive problems

Many people complain about digestion-related issues in the morning like difficulty in the bowel movement or heartburn. Drinking ACV before going to bed can ease digestion related issues and you may enjoy your morning to the fullest. It is an excellent home remedy for digestive problems.

05/5 You might have a sound sleep

Sound sleep is necessary for people of all age groups, but it cannot be denied that most people have disrupted sleep at night. Lack of sleep can lead to obesity and irritation. Drinking ACV at night can help you get a sound sleep of seven to eight hours at night.

GENITAL WARTS SYMPTOMS & TREATMENT
Human papilloma virus (HPV)

FAST FACTS

Genital warts are caused by a virus that can be passed on through close genital contact, including sex without a condom.
They look like small lumps or growths and are usually found around the penis, vagina, anus or upper thighs.
If you think you might have genital warts, it’s important to have them checked by a healthcare professional.
The warts themselves can be treated and removed, but the virus that causes them can’t be cured.
The best way to prevent genital warts is to use condoms and dental dams for sex.

WHAT ARE GENITAL WARTS?

Genital warts are small, raised, usually painless growths. They are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) which can be passed on through sex without a condom. There are over 100 different strains of HPV. The strain of HPV that causes genital warts is different from the strain that causes genital cancers, such as cervical cancer. The HPV that causes warts isn’t linked to cancer and doesn’t cause any more serious health problems. The warts themselves can be treated and will clear.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF GENITAL WARTS?

Genital warts can appear as a single wart or as multiple warts in a cluster.

Symptoms include:

- one or more small, flesh-coloured or grey painless growths or lumps around your vagina, penis, anus or upper thighs

- itching or bleeding from your genitals or anus

- a change to your normal flow of pee (for example, sideways), that doesn't go away.

Be aware that the warts may be difficult to notice if they are internal (inside the vagina or anus) and that many people with the strain of HPV that causes genital warts will not develop any symptoms or know that they have it.

Symptoms of genital warts can appear weeks, months or years after you were in contact with the virus that causes them.

If you have symptoms of genital warts it’s important to visit a health clinic to have them checked.

HOW DO YOU GET GENITAL WARTS?

Genital warts can be passed on through vaginal or anal sex without a condom and by sharing intimacy gadgets. The virus is transmitted through close genital contact, which means that you can get and pass on warts if you touch genitals with someone, even if you don’t have penetrative sex or ejaculate (cum).

Although it’s rare, genital warts can also be passed on through MouthAction and affect the mouth and throat.

You can only get genital warts from someone else who has the virus, but be aware that not everyone will know if they have it. If the warts are internal someone may not notice them and people can pass on the virus even if they don’t have any symptoms.

You can’t get genital warts from kissing, hugging, swimming pools, sharing towels or cutlery.

If a woman has genital warts while pregnant, there is a risk that she could pass them on to her baby at birth. This isn’t very common, but it’s important that pregnant women seek advice from a healthcare worker if they notice any symptoms.

HOW DO YOU PREVENT GENITAL WARTS?

The best way to prevent genital warts is to use a condom for vaginal, anal and MouthAction. If you’re sharing intimacy gadgets these should be covered with a new condom for each partner and washed between use.

If you have symptoms that could be genital warts you should go to a health clinic to have these checked. If you have genital warts, you may be advised to avoid sex while they're being treated. If you do have sex, make sure that the warts are covered with a condom. This area of skin should be covered with a condom even after the warts have gone. You can still pass the virus on for up to three months after the warts have disappeared. Avoid rubbing or touching your warts, in case you spread the infection to the surrounding area. If you find out that you have genital warts your partner should also get checked.

Talking about your sexual health with your partners, and letting each other know about any symptoms or infections, will help you decide how to have safer sex together.

Reducing your number of sexual partners can also help you reduce your risk of getting sexually transmitted infections, like genital warts. If you are having sex with multiple partners, it’s even more important to use condoms and to have regular STI tests.

Condoms are the best form of protection against STIs and pregnancy. Other contraceptives including the contraceptive pill will not prevent genital warts, neither will PrEP.

CAN I GET TESTED FOR GENITAL WARTS?

Yes - a healthcare professional will usually diagnose warts by looking at them. They may check for hidden warts, by looking inside the vagina and or anus. If you have a problem urinating, a specialist may look at the urethra (the tube that carries pee from your bladder).

This examination shouldn’t be painful and you are welcome to have someone with you for the appointment if it would make you feel more comfortable. It’s not something that you should feel embarrassed about, remember that the healthcare professional will do this all the time.

GENITAL WARTS, HIV and SEXUAL HEALTH

If you have genital warts you should also test for HIV and other STIs. Having an STI, including genital warts, can increase your risk of getting HIV. This is because having an STI makes it easier for HIV to get into your body and cause an infection.

People living with HIV can also be more likely to get genital warts or have more severe cases of genital warts. This is especially the case for people who aren’t on treatment or who have a lower CD4 count. You’re more vulnerable to infections, like genital warts, if your immune system is weaker.

Speak to your healthcare provider if you are living with HIV and taking treatment for genital warts, to make sure that the medication won’t affect your antiretroviral treatment (ART).

PREVALENCE & INCIDENCE OF GENITAL WARTS & CERVICAL HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS INFECTION IN NIGERIAN WOMEN

Genital warts are important causes of morbidity and their prevalence and incidence can be used to evaluate the impact of HPV vaccination in a population.

Methods

We enrolled 1020 women in a prospective cohort study in Nigeria and followed them for a mean (SD) of 9 (4) months. Nurses conducted pelvic examinations and collected ectocervical samples for HPV testing. We used exact logistic regression models to identify risk factors for genital warts.

Results

The mean age of study participants was 38 years, 56% (535/962) were HIV-negative and 44% (427/962) were HIV-positive. Prevalence of genital warts at enrolment was 1% (4/535) among HIV-negative women, and 5% (23/427) among HIV-positive women. Of 614 women (307 HIV negative and 307 HIV positive women) for whom we could compute genital wart incidence, it was 515 (95% CI:13–2872) per 100,000 person-years in HIV-negative and 1370 (95% CI:283–4033) per 100,000 person-years in HIV-positive women. HIV was associated with higher risk of prevalent genital warts (OR:7.14, 95% CI:2.41–28.7, p < 0.001) while higher number of sex partners in the past year was associated with increased risk of incident genital warts (OR:2.86, 95% CI:1.04–6.47. p = 0.04). HPV11 was the only HPV associated with prevalent genital warts in this population (OR:8.21, 95% CI:2.47–27.3, p = 0.001).

Conclusion

Genital warts are common in Nigeria and our results provide important parameters for monitoring the impact of future HPV vaccination programs in the country. HIV infection and number of sexual partners in past year were important risk factors for prevalent and incident genital warts respectively.

Sanwo-Olu approves increase in BRT fares, gives reason

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a N100 increase in bus fares for all Bus Rapid Transit and standard routes with effect from July 13.

The Assistant Director of Corporate Communication, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Mr Kolawole Ojelabi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

He said, “The increase, which will come into effect on July 13, is aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the BRT and standard route schemes. These measures are indispensable in the current global economic and environmental reality to ensure the sustainability of the Bus Reform Initiative operation.

“With the increase, a bus ride from Ikorodu – Tafawa Balewa Square will now cost N600 from N500 while Berger to Ajah is now N700, up from N600. Oshodi to Abule Egba will cost N450 from N350 and Abule-Egba-CMS-Obalende will attract a fare of N600.”

Ojelabi explained that the increase is due to the rising price of diesel which affected the performance of the bus-operating companies.
