Israel has barred its state airline El Al from making flights to Nigeria because of concerns about terrorism.

Israeli Tourism Ministry official Rafi Ben Hur says the ban will affect thousands of Nigerian Christians who had planned to fly to Israel during the upcoming pilgrimage season, which runs from later this month to January.

The original plan called for El Al to carry out the round trip flights on behalf of a Nigerian firm.

Last December, a Nigerian man was arrested on charges of trying to blow up a plane flying from Amsterdam to the U.S. city of Detroit, Michigan.

Ben Hur says the Nigerians will most likely have to rely on other air carriers for their flights to and from Israel.

I really feel Nigeria is not losing anything here, except for the stranded pilgrims. Even then, the pilgrims can still make the journey individually, (that is if it is compulsory).

This is a shame! A case of the kettle calling the pot black. Isn't Israel notorious for carrying out international terrorism thru its intelligence outfit - Mossad? The latest in their play book was the assasination of Hamas leader in an hotel in Dubai earlier this year using the forged passports of several countries including Britain, USA, France etc to hide their true identity. I am sure our weedy government will not do anything to call off their bluff.

That is, if we shall ever have a government, because right now, none exist.

Why are you spitting such venom?? Read the article well Isreal recognises that she is loosing in this decision. Isreal granted the nigerian pilgrims visa but said their airline shouldnt fly to Nigeria! Isreal knows they are loosing money here. Solution is that Nigeria should get their own Airline (Nigerian airways??) to fly her pilgrims to Isreal. If there was a Nigeria airways this stuff wont even make news headlines!
Its simple security precaution, your ranting about Mossad is irrelevant!

Indeed, if there was a national carrier, it would have called the bluff of this issue. Meanwhile, this is one of the damaging policies of OBJ. Winding up Nigerian Airways, and smuggling in Virgin Nigeria, was not the best. He should have allowed a stiff competition for a private airline from any nation from the world to manage Nigeria Airways, while paying royalty to the Nigerian govt. This was once done many years ago by by Royal Dutch Airline (KLM) in Nigeria, before we used our Nigerian factor to send them away. OBJ should have studied what Kenya Airways, and Ethiopia Airways are currently doing. Those countries are poor nations, but their Airlines are doing their nations proud. For your information, even Ethiopian Airline, do turn around maintainance for aircrafts from our rich nation. What a shame!.

I wonder why anyone would reckon with what a terrorist state that specialises in piracy without any rules of engagement says about terrorism. MEND has indeed brought shame to Nigeria and shame we dont have a govt who could stand for us. We have no national carrier , it is only the poor pilgrims that would feel the pains of this but the could seek other alternatives like someone here suggests.

Isreal should go an sit down somewhere and shut up. Between Nigeria and Isreal, who has had more bombings within the last 5 years.  If at all Nigeria should be the one placing isreal in the no fly location.
