How Can I Do A Master's With A 3rd Class ? by usetime: 4:45am On Oct 20, 2010
wanna know if i can get admission directly into a master's programme
in finance/banking/economics
with this cgpa i gat. its really low . cgpa less than 2.0
i would consider postgraduates only if i can't get direct admission into
master's. but the costs of postgraduates and masters programme would too high !!
i'm talking of the u.k fees for international students.
will english tests scores help out. e.g toefl , ielts?
on the other hand , i'd like to know if a nigerian postgraduate diploma
would qualify me for direct admission into a master's programme over there . or whether i'd still be nailed for the 3rd class afterall.
then, if the worst comes to it - are nigerian master's programmes really
considered so inferior to their foreign counterparts in the international
scene -
since the paper is for job and career advancement - i may do naija own
if i'm bounced for visa.
just want a place where i can save time . 1 year masters. or 2 year masters + post graduate.
will a gmat test score + toefl / ielts enable me to enrol directly into a masters programme. really want to know.
i don't really care about the country - so far as i do the stuff in less time,
experience 24 hour electricity, can work and school,
low cost of living or affordable, high quality of tuition (world class)
please give feedback.

senseless.

@ op
3rd class isn't an end.
Waste no time, go for a PGD. Check out for some universities in the UK offering the 1 Year Top-Up Honours Degree courses, you may be considered, then, Masters can follow.

Gd luck!

@usetime,

I suggest you apply to as many universities as possible in the UK. Universities have different admission policies, especially for adults.

Do not let your third class degree put you off from progressing your career in Nigeria or anywhere else.

Why was your cgpa so low? No good university will give you admission for a masters programme with that. If you did not comprehend your bachellors curriculum well enough to get a higher cgpa, why in the world will anybody wanna give you admission for something more advanced.

I personally know someone who graduated with a 3rd class from Nigeria, and went on to do a PGD, masters, and Phd. He did the Phd in the UK, while PGD and Masters I think were here.

I'm sure if you investigate you'll find options in the UK. Some good schools offer a PGCert/PGDip route through to an Msc. Just do your research.

@ Poster

I don't think you have a clear picture or roadmap as to where you are going with regard to your career.

Education in Britain is VERY GOOD but VERY EXPENSIVE.

I know some people who have flushed money down the toilet just for school sake.

I think it is critical that you can plan the career before taking such a decision,

Notwithstanding your bachelors course, if you could not make up to a 2.0 CGPA, there is no point getting a masters degree until you clear your head,

If you are religious, I advice that you pray, then identify your strengths, and things for which you have passion (the things you love doing, effortlessly) you can then build a career path in that direction.

If you are able to make something out of your strengths, then in the future, if you require a masters degree which would hone your strength, fine!

Since you would be passionate about the course, there is no way that you would not perform exceedingly well.

My former boss made a 3rd in Elect Engineering  from UNILAG, she cleared her head and realised that Engineering was not for her, That was 6 years ago anyway. Now she is an accountant and she has an MBA from INSEAD Business school.
