I said it is the reason for the common belief. I didn't say it is my belief. I am from an Igbo family that descended from an Edo settler in Igbo land. I think we are all inter-related because of inter-tribal marriages, migration and captured slaves who integrated into their new communities. To me, race and tribe are loosely defined. Deadlytruth:
So Oduduwa who, according to Yoruba history, dropped from the sky and landed in Ife, later bore a son who travelled from Ife to Egypt to become the projenitor of the Binis who came from the Egyptian plains according to their own history? Aren't we supposed to be logical in our approach to historical reconstructions?
If the Yoruba history you claim to have been taught in school is anything to go by, then why haven't wondered why during the times of the Old Western Region, the Yoruba chief whip in the Region's parliament would, at the opening of sessions, give salutations to the Ooni of Ife, Alafin of Oyo, Awujale of Ijebu land and leave out the Oba of Benin and then declare that he had saluted all the Yoruba traditional rulers? The fact that none of those Yoruba monarchs he mentioned ever "corrected" him to include the Oba of Benin means they themselves knew deep down in their hearts that the theory of Edo being Yoruba was a politically motivated fabrication.
You rely on Yoruba "history" to determine who Edos are rather than Edo people's own history? So you found reliable and plausible the history of a people who claimed that their projenitor dropped from the sky and are even relying on whatever such mythical history says of another tribe? Yoruba history also tells us that Igbos are emigrants of Ife, so we can as well conclude that Igbos are actually Yorubas more so that a lot of Igbo words have very close spellings and pronouncuation with their Yoruba equivalents e.g. Orisha (Yoruba) and Olisah (Igbo), Ewure (Yoruba) and Ewu (Igbo), Enu (Yoruba) and Onu (Igbo), etc? 1 Like |

You haven’t heard of doesn’t mean it isn’t. Don’t let ignorance kill you, pick up your phone and google it, you will also realize there are indigenous Igbos in Edo State as well. whatever is on Google is written by someone and probably even the writer may not come from there. is just a case of random research. are you from igbanke, if not then don't live on what u read. First hand info is still the key to all truth. |

I didn't say it was a lie. It is a claim. We don't have a lot of written history in Africa so we often rely on storytelling which gets distorted over time. Please avoid the term "you guys/people" as we are all the same. RemiOAjayi:
Why should Yoruba lie about that ? What benefit zdo we derive from having Edo called Yoruba? Are Yorubas bearing Edo or binis Names ? Being sibling does not necessary mean one have to work together but it doesn't deny the fact that they are related .is only fact that Edo and Yoruba are related , we need nothing from u guys |

Edo to Igbo too
Propaganda won't help you.
Edo by right belongs to Edo and to a larger family of yorubas.
Edo to igbo is that not madness??
Edo is for edo.
Igbos aren't found in Edo state. 1 Like |

Ctorch:
keep deceiving yourself in this 21st century.
What can be see and cleary dottted with simple eye is what you trying to deny by bringing politics to a nice submission and little Omission.
The similarities shared between yoruba and edos is just beyond simple eye and even to the layman cannot bee denied.
is it names, pronunciation, title, skin, dynasty, history....Mr what are you arguing for christ sake??
There is no political correctness but facts. If there is/are any difference is minimal but on greater scale can be converged.
moreover I didn't say it first, it was even a mod that said that anyway. So it takes a mod to say something for that thing to be true. The said mod once erroneously claimed in another thread that no part of Edo State is a hilly terrain and hence exposed his ignorance about the state he so speaks of with authority. Unfortunately you have not given any specific citation or instance of the similarities you allege between Edo and Yorubas, yet you claim eyes can see them. I have rather pointed specific examples of similarities between Yorubas and you Igbos. In all his Yoruba irredentism Awolowo the most knowledgeable Yoruba man to ever walk on earth surface, never targeted anywhere in the present Edo State because his personal reserch visits made it clear to him that there is really no cultural or linguistic affinity between Edo and Yorubas. The only place he targeted is the Itsekiri enclave whom he helped install/impose their Olu as the Paramount ruler of Warri hence the intractible Warri crisis. But it continues to beat common sense why you Igbos focus on Edo in your search for Yorubaness but abandon Delta with the obviously Yoruboid Itsekiris and Olukunmis. How doesn't this prove clearly that it is all aimed at political blackmail? The bearing of Yoruba names in Edo doesn't make them Yorubas any more than their bearing of Nupe names like Damisa, Daniyan, Attah, Dirisu, Daudu, Mayaki, etc. make them Nupes. All these are just due to cross-cultural interferences through trade or war and conquests. Yorubas too do bear such Nupe names, and it doesn't make them Nupes. Igbos never really had interactions with many other tribes prior to colonization hence the less frequency of adoption of names of other tribes. 1 Like |

Deadlytruth:
Igbos never really had interactions with many other tribes prior to colonization hence the less frequency of adoption of names of other tribes.
you win sire. Is obvious u not giving up anytime soon. you win oooo |

Emary: I said it is the reason for the common belief. I didn't say it is my belief. I am from an Igbo family that descended from an Edo settler in Igbo land. I think we are all inter-related because of inter-tribal marriages, migration and captured slaves who integrated into their new communities. To me, race and tribe are loosely defined.
Well, if commonness of an assumption makes that assumption the truth, then the world wouldn't have been accused of ignorance as it is currently done. |

AgentGoat:
Why are the languages so similar? Does the similarity of the languages automatically translate to being the same? The mere fact that we are even talking of their similarity makes it clear that they are not the same. If they were one and the same language, then no one would be talking of similarity in the first instance. Please recall that you can't be saying Hausa is similar to Hausa or Igbo similar to Igbo. But we can say "Igbo is similar to Yoruba" meaning they are different languages in the first instance to warrant a search for similarity. Above all, similarity is a relative term whose validity is difficult to measure. 1 Like |

Owe, Okun, Bunu and Yagba are listed as separate ethnicity then the poster went ahead and included Kogi state as one of Yoruba speaking states. Which Yoruba speaking people come remain for Kogi aside these four? These mentioned groups do not qualify to be called English separate ethnicity because within the Okun Yoruba subgroup, we have Owe. The Bunu people speaks Owe. Okun is not even a language per se, it's just a way of greeting. These four listed here have no business being on the list. They're all Yorubas. 1 Like |

Propaganda won't help you.
Edo by right belongs to Edo and to a larger family of yorubas.
Edo to igbo is that not madness??
Edo is for edo.
Igbos aren't found in Edo state. There is nothing like a larger family of Yorubas to which Edo belongs. According to Bishop Ajayi Crowther who was himself a Yoruba and an authority on Yoruba Anthropology, the Yoruba appelation is a very recent invention aimed at unifying previously unrelated ethnic groups occupying the Southwestern parts of the territory now called Nigeria. Prior to the advent of that appelation the Edos had been known as a distinct and cohesive people. So how does Edo which existed before Yorubas suddenly fall under the so called Yoruba family? |
