And someone thinks that closing the border is the solution? Do you know the inconveniences you caused the citizens because of this your reasoning? Borders are patrolled by the police, immigration, army & other security apparatus & when these people are up & doing, no pin goes in or out of the country without them knowing. Nigeria's problem bothers on security not closing of borders.

I’m wondering how this is connected to the problem of moving out tomatoes out from Imeko, Ogun State (close to the border).

Nigeria has no comparative advantage in rice production. Only 3 countries have this advantage and they are Thailand, Vietnam and India as they have the large amounts of the best land suited for rice production.

All other countries to some degree should import some of their stuff.

It is not about increasing production until the price will drop. That has been the argument about other prodcts the country banned.

The country should focus on what it has comparative advantage in. Shea butter has been reckoned to have the ability to earn the country as much as $2bn yearly. The forex from there alone will take care of rice imports. There's cashew, cocoa and many other products that Nigeria excels in. I'm sure if kolanuts were well exploited, it can yield as much as $2bn yearly as well

Country's do best when they focus on things they have comparative advantage in. Pouring resources into areas you suck at does very little for you.

if only ur comment is void of sentiments

My argument is that how can paying 18,000 for rice that is 12,000 help the poor? What's the point in being self sufficient in expensive rice help the indigent?
It's too bad none of the handful of people making policy seem to have the intellectual capacity to grasp such a seemingly obvious fact: not the doddering ex-coup plotter called Buhari (off to yet another one of the foreign junkets he loves so much), and not the toadying excuse for a Central Bank Governor called Emefiele who is content to play the errand boy.

Nice talk. The borders leaking insurgents into Nigeria are the ones to be closed.

Isn't it just business as usual?
Some few people with the long leg are to made rich through this anti-masses move.
Not even when Federal government is not yet tired of their usual insincerity and paying of lip service to agriculture.
If only the local rice was available and affordable.

lets eat what we grow and use our own ports

Lamenting fools should go to Ghana and see thier laws, you can't ship in nonesense into their country

Igbo people's shops are being closed by ghanians because their Government made laws forbiding foreigners from owning small businesses that would compete with locals, so businesses less than $200k isnt allowed

We need such to grow rather than continue borrowing for luxury

...

before we can eat what we grow we must grow what will we eat.

these children of hate are really something else. they want to eat their cake and have it back. it's not possible. how can you Have a better economy without taking advantage of areas that you have strength. you have to start from somewhere. as the saying goes, no pain no gain. an example was the GSM revolution. sim cards started at a price of about N35000, but today, they are sold for N200. when the multiplier effects of Nigerian rice sets in, price will fall. but it takes time

We must not import from Benin but the government should do something to savage the situation. We have passed through this lane before and we all know the difficulties in it. Why open the border before election and closed it back after election when they know we don't have enough to sustain us.

all great countries start from somewhere. ours will not be different. look at China, Singapore, Malaysia etc. they started in the 50s. today they are competitive in areas of their strength.

This Benin Border closure affects me seriously, but let's be true to ourselves that border is killing Nigeria economy n if we really want to be a developed economy, how long do we continue with a border like that?

So Buhari had to travel all the way to Japan to tell his next door neighbor the reason he closed the border. Why didn't he just pick up a phone and call?

I wonder why Buhari 's mouth always runs like cholera everytime he travels, but once he he is back in Abuja he becomes deaf and mute
