I am a Nigerian who lives abroad but I've never been proud of my nationality ever since I emigrated. Most of this owe to the quality of life in Nigeria, the fact that more and more Nigerians are leaving to seek better lives overseas, whereas very few foreigners migrate to Nigeria for want of a better life. Here are few reasons why Nigeria is a failed state.

1. Lack of Creativity and Innovation in Science & Technology.

We're are seldom innovative or creative. We simply consume products, imitate or copy the ideas of the Europeans and replicate them without really understanding why they worked for the Europeans. Our educational syllabus is filled with outdated or falsified information. And no one care, because education in Nigeria is all about landing a job.

2. Crude Oil

Nigeria oil reserve is a curse in disguise. It is unearned gift that turn in huge amount of wealth. Wealth easily obtained without sweat is seldom judiciously spent. Wealth easily obtained does not motivate creativity or innovation. This is reality. Our oil wealth is wasted or embezzled and no one is held accountable because we can always turn to our oil wells. None of the developed countries in the world export crude oil. They work off their ass to manufacture and export tertiary products.

3. Over population

We are over 200 million at this rate, more than 2/3 the population of US, which is about 10 times the land area of Nigeria. In Nigeria, there is no idea of family planning. Men have 5,6 10 children and even more with multiple wives. Too many Nigerians means more expenses by the government to supply electricity, water, and install and maintain basic amenities like public toilets or good roads; because of the excessive usage of these amenities by the large population.

4. Tribal and Religious Bias

Nigeria is a divided country with so many ethnic groups and two major religions. Due to this, democratic elections are really just majoritocratic elections. Leaders are not elected on merit but on their ethnic and religious affiliation. This is why in any election contested between a northerner and a southerner, the northerner win the most votes in the north and the southerner wins the most vote in the south.

5. Unpatriotic Citizens

A lot of Nigerians don't love their country. They would leave the country if they had the chance. Much of those that leave have really no desire to return. These Nigerians simply pursue their personal interest, there is no national consciousness, no sense of purpose to build or invest in the nation.
