I honestly think this reason is lame, except there’s something they’re not telling us. The people to be evacuated are Nigerians with a Nigerian airline. I don’t get how an expired passport will stop them from flying. The view of the immigration officer on arrival is that you are coming home and as such all you need to do is prove citizenship, which an expired passport does.
The hurdle is not at arriving at your destination which happens to be ones own country, but leaving the foreign country one is presently at. Because before you do, south african immigration will have to clear and certify you for not over-staying your previous visa (overstaying means you have to pay for the excess you've stayed before you can leave the country). So yes, there is a hurdle because they will have to either pay for the excess they've stayed or possibility of even being jailed is there.
Again, this is where our embassy can step in and issue T.C to Nigerians who dont have valid passport and/ot claim they lost their passport, hence they couldnt come forward to extend their visa. The T.C enable them smooth passage through airport immigration.

You seem to ignore that one can travel to his home country with an expired passport. This has been done all over the world
the truth is that most of them dont have visa and they cant go near to the airport without SA immigration agreement of letting all illigal go,they will be sent to jail if they get caught

But the article isn't making any mention of people overstaying their visa.
The article only indicates the fact that the setback is due to expired passports. And having an expired passport doesn't mean the person has an illegal status in the country they live in.
All over the world, people fly back to their home countries with expired passports.
An expired passport is still a proof of citizenship.

Then if another mass attack erupt, they will be abandon due to expired documents. Nigeria is truly a definition of problem.

have u ever travel out of your village?SA immigration will need to be involve in letting them go..if they have visa ,their visa need to be cancel
You’re the deranged villager speaking on a topic you know nothing about. I have been in travel business for years, and you can check www.trekkafrica.com to clear your doubt.
Staying in a foreign country with an expired passport isn’t an offense anywhere in the world. Secondly, expired Visa doesn’t make one an illegal immigrant as well. You only become an illegal immigrant when you either overstay the duration of your visit as indicated by the Immigration officer during entry or you’re an undocumented immigrant. Let’s assume their Visas have all expired and they have also overstayed their visit, hence violating their visas. The worst that can happen is for a travel ban to be imposed on them for whatever duration the SA government approves for such offense. Which will make them ineligible to step into SA again for the duration of the ban. Expired passport can’t stop anybody from returning to his/her country.

No country will give you a visa or renew your visa on an expired passport. This simply means they must have gotten a visa that correspond to the life span or validity of their passport. (Meaning you cant applied to get a one year visa or visa renewal on a 6 months passport validity). So they must have gotten their valid visa on a valid passport. And if you know your passport will be expiring soon, why not go to your embassy and renew it or fly back home to do it?
So the point here is, if they've renewed their passport, they wont be having expired passport issue. And as far as you are having an expired passport, it simply means you cant get a valid visa on such an expired passport. And thats not an excuse. Because for you to stay in another man's country, you definitely need a valid visa. staying in another man's country without visa due to an expired passport is no body's fault but yours. So in all, an expired passport means no valid visa. And staying without valid visa is a crime.

OMG, this is the first time I have heard this and I have been living in Canada for a very long time.
There are so many people here with legal status but whose passports have been expired many years ago

You’re wrong sir. Let’s take US as a case study. The standard Visa issued by US is 24 months which is 2 years. You must have at least 6 months Validity to be able to apply for a US Visa. What it means is that you can have a valid Visa on an expired passport, all you need do is get a new passport and bind both together. While Canada gives you Visa based on the Validity of your passport. So Visa doesn’t necessarily correspond to the validity of passport. Secondly, staying without a valid visa isn’t a crime. You guys fail to understand the meaning of Visa. Visa doesn’t guarantee you an entry into a country, it only ushers you to a point of entry to request permission from an Immigration officer to enter the country. Now, you can have a visa that will expire in 2 weeks and travel to US, if the CBP officers stamps 6 months on your passport, you’re permitted to stay in the Us for 6 months not minding the expiration of your visa in 2 weeks time. Finally, let’s go back to our topic at hand. A country that said all illegal immigrants should vacate their country, isn’t it unwise to start checking the validity of passport?

My thought exactly...

What does an expired passport have to do with Nigerians returning home from a foreign country, in a time of crises, with the approval of the Nigerian government

[b]My passport expired while I was in Canada and I still flew from Ontario to Lagos with a Dubai stop over.

An expired passport does not stop you from returning to your home country. Air peace should come out with the truth.

It’s either people are not showing interest or they have not been able to get anyone (the government) to cover the cost.

At the time of your travel were you a visitor or resident or citizen of Canada?

International law does not allow travel without travel documents especially in this era of terrorism. How can you be sure the person is a Nigerian. The Airports are still controlled by South Africa.
What the Nigerian Embassy can do is to give temporary travel documents

The same thing happens during deportations. Even a corpse in a casket needs documents .[/quot

get my point dear... there is a passport already we are talking of expiration date naa

I know. Thats the point. No airline, customs or Airport in any country will let you board a plane with an expired passport EXCEPT you have alternative travelling documents ( known as temporary or emergency travelling paper/documents) which your Embassy can easily provide for you. It just states, that the Embassy identifies you as a citizen of that country and temporarily allows you to use that document to travel.

I have witnessed it myself when a friend was turned back because of expired passport.
