Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis refers to the buildup of plaques in and on your artery walls which can restrict blood flow.
As you get older, fats, cholesterol, and calcium can collect in your arteries and form plaque. The buildup of plaque makes it difficult for blood to flow through your arteries. This buildup may occur in any artery in your body, including your heart, legs, and kidneys.

It can result in a shortage of blood and oxygen in various tissues of your body. Pieces of plaque can also break off, causing a blood clot. If left untreated, atherosclerosis can lead to heart attack, stroke, or heart failure.

What Causes Atherosclerosis?

1. High cholesterol; cholesterol is a waxy, yellow substance that’s found naturally in the body as well as in certain foods you eat. If the levels of cholesterol in your blood are too high, it can clog your arteries. It becomes a hard plaque that restricts or blocks blood circulation to your heart and other organs.
High levels of cholesterol aren’t the only risk factor in developing atherosclerosis, but they’re a significant contributor. There are two kinds of cholesterol. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is also known as “bad” cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is known as “good” cholesterol. The goal in treating cholesterol and its related problems is to keep LDL low and to raise HDL.

2. Diet; it’s important to eat a healthy diet rich in wide range of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, poultry & fish, nuts & legumes, vegetable oils, such as olive oil or sunflower oil.

You must avoid the following in your diets
- Foods and drinks with added sugar, such as sugar-sweetened beverages, candy, and desserts.
- Foods high in salt
- Foods high in unhealthy fats, such as saturated fats.

3. Aging; as you age, your heart and blood vessels work harder to pump and receive blood. Your arteries may weaken and become less elastic, making them more susceptible to plaque buildup.

SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of moderate to severe atherosclerosis depend on which arteries are affected. For example:

• If you have atherosclerosis in your heart arteries, you may have symptoms, such as chest pain or pressure (angina).
• If you have atherosclerosis in the arteries leading to your brain, you may have symptoms such as sudden numbness or weakness in your arms or legs, difficulty speaking or slurred speech, or drooping muscles in your face. These signal a transient ischemic attack, which, if left untreated, may progress to a stroke.
• If you have atherosclerosis in the arteries in your arms and legs, you may have symptoms of peripheral artery disease, such as leg pain when walking
• If you have atherosclerosis in the arteries leading to your kidneys, you develop high blood pressure or kidney failure.
• If you have atherosclerosis in the arteries leading to your genitals, you may have difficulties having sex. Sometimes, atherosclerosis can cause erectile dysfunction in men. In women, high blood pressure can reduce blood flow to the vagina, making sex less pleasurable.

How is atherosclerosis treated?

First line of treatment involves changing your current lifestyle to decrease the amount of fat & cholesterol you consume.

Helpful lifestyle changes include:
• Eating a healthy diet that’s low in saturated fat & cholesterol
• Avoiding fatty foods
• Adding fish to your diet
• Engaging in moderate exercise
• Quitting smoking
• Losing weight if you’re overweight or obese
• Managing stress
• Treating conditions associated with atherosclerosis, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes

Alternative Medicine: There are a number of herbs that could help treat atherosclerosis, such as artichoke extract, garlic, hawthorn etc.

Bones, Joints and Muscles Problems and Solutions;

Fibromyalgia:

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a disease of the muscles and the soft tissues. It is a complex disorder that causes pain, tenderness, and fatigue in the muscles of specific parts of the body, including the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms, and legs.
People with Fibromyalgia often experience other symptoms, such as extreme tiredness that does not get better with sleep or rest, problems sleeping, mood, or memory problems. Fibromyalgia affects more women than men. The pain, extreme tiredness, and lack of sleep that fibromyalgia causes can affect your ability to work or do daily activities.

Fibromyalgia has been compared to arthritis. Like Arthritis, Fibromyalgia causes pain and fatigue. But, unlike Arthritis, Fibromyalgia does not cause redness and swelling, or damage to your joints.

Getting a diagnosis for Fibromyalgia is very difficult. One reason for this is that, pain, fatigue and sleep problems, which are the main symptoms of fibromyalgia, also are symptoms of many other conditions. Second reason is that, there is no lab test for Fibromyalgia. Although Fibromyalgia is prevalent, new research has found that doctors have misdiagnosed many people as having this condition.

What are the symptoms of Fibromyalgia?

• Extreme tiredness, called fatigue
• Cognitive and memory problems
• Trouble sleeping
• Mood problems
• Headaches
• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
• Painful menstrual periods
• Numbness or tingling of hands and feet
• Restless legs syndrome
• Sensitivity to loud noises or bright lights, temprature
• Depression or anxiety

What causes Fibromyalgia?

Researchers are not sure exactly what causes Fibromyalgia. Studies also show that the brains of people with Fibromyalgia may not process pain in the same way as people who do not have Fibromyalgia, so Fibromyalgia may be caused by a problem in the brain with nerves and pain signals. In other words, in people with Fibromyalgia, the brain misunderstands everyday pain and other sensory experiences, making the person more sensitive to pressure, temperature (hot or cold), bright lights, and noise compared to people who do not have Fibromyalgia.

What are the treatments for Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is treated with a combination of treatments, which may include herbal medicines and lifestyle changes.

• Herbal Treatment For Fibromyalgia:

Best approach is to use a combination of the following herbs under the supervision of a qualified health care giver in order to avoid harmful drug interactions with other prescriptions medications you may be taken. Examples of herbs for the treatment of fibromyalgia are Lycium, Griffonia, St John Wort, Ginseng Korean, White willow, Valerian etc These herbs are relaxant, sedative, immune booster, neuroprotective, and nervine in action,

• Lifestyle Changes For Fibromyalgia:

~ Getting enough sleep
~ Getting regular physical activity
~ Learning how to manage stress
~ Eating a healthy diet

Blood, Heart and Circulation

High Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that circulates in your blood. Your body uses it to create cells, hormones, and vitamin D. Your liver creates all the Cholesterol you need from fats in your diet. When the amount of cholesterol is normal, the body is healthy. When the amount of Cholesterol increases in the blood, the body becomes diseased.

When you have High Cholesterol, you may develop fatty deposits in your blood vessels. Eventually, these deposits make it difficult for enough blood to flow through your arteries. Your heart may not get as much oxygen-rich blood as it needs, which increases the risk of a heart attack. This may also lead to decreased blood flow to your brain which can cause a stroke.

Cholesterol doesn’t dissolve in the blood. Instead, it bonds to carriers called lipoproteins, which transport it between cells. Lipoproteins are made up of fat on the inside and protein on the outside. There are two main types of cholesterol carried by different types of lipoproteins.

1. Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDL) are sometimes called “bad” cholesterol. High levels of LDL cholesterol can build up in your arteries, causing heart disease, stroke etc

2. High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL) are referred to as “good” cholesterol. It helps in removing LDL from the inner walls of the blood vessels. It transports the LDL back to the liver where they are broken down and removed from the body. The more the level of HDL the less the chances of developing heart diseases.

Symptoms of High Cholesterol
High cholesterol has no symptom. A blood test is the only way to detect High cholesterol.

Causes of High Cholesterol

• Stress • Old age • Obesity • Smoking • Poor diet • Diabetes • Hereditary • Liver problems • Alcohol • Kidney etc

Who needs to get checked?

Everyone should get their cholesterol checked, starting from the age of 20. And then again, every five years.

How to prevent high cholesterol

• Lose extra pounds and maintain a healthy weight
• Quit smoking
• Eat a low-fat, low-salt diet that includes many fruits, vegetables and whole grains
• Exercise on most days of the week for at least 20 minutes
• Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all

ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

• Few natural products have been proven to reduce cholesterol such as Turmeric, Coriander, Ginger, Lemongrass.

Outlook
While your body needs cholesterol to continue building healthy cells, having high cholesterol can increase your risk of chest pain, heart diseases & stroke. So, it is never too early to make healthy lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking, eating healthy foods and becoming more physically active. These are primary lines of defense against high cholesterol and its complications.

Homeopathic Help For Broken Bones

Broken bones. Many of us have had them. And the causes are frequently as simple as slipping while walking, fall from a height, old age, Osteoporosis, muscle damage, hurt to tendons, etc.

Once a bone breaks, it often must be set in proper alignment and held there in order to heal properly. This process of setting a bone is called "reduction." Setting a bone without surgery is "closed reduction” and most fractures, especially in children, are treated in this fashion.
Serious or complex fractures may require open reduction - repositioning using surgery. And then once a fracture is “set,” the broken part is often immobilized for a period of time to allow the bone to heal through a process called callous formation and then “remodeling” (a process the body uses to return a broken bone to its original shape). The whole process typically takes 6-12 weeks.

How can one help this process with homeopathy?

For close to 200 years, homeopaths have used homeopathic remedies to aid patients with pain, swelling and discoloration from bone breaks, as well as speed healing and bone repair time. Recent medical research has begun to confirm these benefits and health systems at places like the University of Michigan which published recommendations on remedies to employ.
So how can you use homeopathy the next time a loved one has a bone breaking event?
Here are a few remedies to have on hand:

• Arnica: Broken bones typically come with a degree of blunt trauma to soft tissues – which in turn leads to swelling, pain and discoloration. The homeopathic remedy Arnica can be taken immediately following an accident to bring relief on all three fronts – pain, swelling and discoloration.

• Eupatorium Perfoliatum: This homeopathic remedy is well-known for its use in flu and fever when the patient feels pains in the bones (“as if broken”) and can be useful to relieve the deep or aching pain of actual broken bones.

• Hypericum: This homeopathic remedy is very useful for crushing injuries to body areas like fingers and toes. If these areas suffer a crushing injury (with or without a break), Hypericum can bring welcome pain relief.

• Ruta Graveolens: This homeopathic remedy is known for its effect on bone-bruises and on injuries to the Periosteum (the covering of the bones); both of these types of trauma are involved when a fracture of a bone occurs. Ruta is also indicated when the pain around a fracture is extreme, and the person feels lame or weak. This remedy is also helpful in many cases when pain persists after treatment with Arnica, or after the cast is removed.

• Symphytum Officinale: As new research is showing, this homeopathic remedy is often a great help in accelerating callous formation (bone repair) after a break and it can also help relieve the pain of a break. It should be in every homeopathic first aid kit.

As with any medical condition, consult with your physician if you have any concerns about the severity of your injury or the progress of your recovery or getting the right treatment meant for you.

ARTHRITIS

Arthritis is very common but is not well understood. The area where two or more bones meet is called a joint. Pain in the joints coupled with swelling, burning sensation, stiffness and/or deformity is called Arthritis. Arthritis often causes pain in the fingers, knees, elbows, hips, jaw and in fact, any place in the body where there is a joint between bones.

Causes:

Arthritis could be caused by wear and tear in the joints, having diets high in fats, overweight or obesity, mineral deposition in joint, joint trauma, fractures, bacterial and viral infections, autoimmune diseases, metabolic disturbances, neuropathy, endocrine disease, genetics, etc

In this article, we look at few common forms of arthritis and their herbal or homeopathic remedies.

Osteoarthritis: It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears down over time. Although osteoarthritis can damage any joint, the disorder most commonly affects joints in your hands, knees, hips and spine.

Herbal remedy: Boswellia has strong anti arthritic and anti inflammatory properties. These properties help to reduce inflammation and improve blood supply to the joint tissues.

Rheumatoid Arthritis(RA)
This is an autoimmune disease with chronic inflammation of the joints which occurs when body’s immune system which normally protects us from infection mistakenly attacks the synovium, the thin membrane that lines the joints. The result can be joint damage, pain, inflammation, deformity, etc
The joint damage that RA causes usually happens on both sides of the body. So if a joint is affected in one of your arms or legs, the same joint in the other arm or leg will probably be affected, too

Herbal remedies; in addition to the use of Boswellia, 8 drops of Juniper Essential Oil with one teaspoon of Coconut oil could be applied to the affected area.

Gout: Gout is a form of arthritis that occurs when excess uric acid, a bodily waste product circulating in the bloodstream, is deposited as needle-shaped monosodium urate crystals in tissues of the body, including the joints. For many people, the first symptom of gout is excruciating pain and swelling in the big toe. Subsequent attacks may occur off and on in other joints, primarily those of the foot and knee, before becoming chronic.

Herbal remedy: have a decoction of Cinnamon, take half glass a day.
Homeopathic remedies: Colchicum, Gratiola, Lycopus are general remedies for Gout

Lupus:
Lupus, or systemic lupus erythematosus, is a chronic autoimmune disease, meaning the body's immune system creates antibodies that attack healthy tissues. In addition to causing inflammation in the knee and other joints, lupus can affect many organs, including the skin, heart, lungs, and kidney.

Herbal remedies: take Borage in your daily diet and message the affected part with a blend of Coconut Oil and Lime Essential Oil.

Ankylosing Spondylitis:
Ankylosing Spondylitis is a form of arthritis that primarily affects the spine, causing inflammation in the spine that can lead to chronic pain and stiffening of the spine. In some people, particularly younger people, it begins with pain and swelling in the knee rather than the spine.

Herbal remedy;
following herbs may be beneficial in countering inflammation associated with this condition; Turmeric, White willow, Devil's claw, Cayenne, Cat's claw, etc
Organic Sulphur, Methylsulponylmethane (MSM) is also a very good natural remedy for this challenge.

Infectious arthritis: Also called septic arthritis, infectious arthritis refers to arthritis that is caused by an infection within the joint. Infectious arthritis is often caused by bacteria that spread through the bloodstream to the joint. Sometimes it is caused by viruses or fungi or bacteria.

Herbal remedies like Burdock, wild indigo, skullcap, turmeric will help greatly in the healing of the infection in the joint.

Some of these herbs are used topically, while others are ingested internally for maximum benefits. Before you try any herbal supplement, it is important that you discuss its use with your healthcare giver.
