Larry, I don't know how you'll do it, but please send Maria and Petee back to school.

23. Such a young boy... with a wife and baby on the way.

He should quit crime, set up a business and get some education.

Ohhh. I think that was the surgery she was supposed to go for at High Cross Hospital before she escaped.

It was why Officer JB desperately wanted to help her receive treatment first. What a life!

Misery all around!

By the way.... @LarrySun, all that money Chief Salami spent on winning a local government chairmanship just didn't make sense. Nobody goes to that extent to become a local government chairman. How much is there to be made? If you ever review the story, I think it would be more logical to change the elections to a gubernatorial election or Senatorial.

Yes, Maria had a terrible time in the hands of the Matron, it will not be wise to think that the ill treatments meted on her will be inconsequential..

However, I expected them to be temporarily consequential, if permanently, it should be scars sustained from the brute..

Little did I know that the after effects of the sufferings will be life threatening, The woman still extended her wickedness to her even in prison, I wish she stayed alive to feel Peter Black's wrath,Chief Salami can attest to that..

Peter Black is about to be robbed off of happiness again..

It has always been so, everything that makes him happy are taken away from him. Maybe it has something to do with his name-Black- which is widely believed to be associated with evil, sadness and other forms of negativity..

BRAVO LARRYSUN..

@emboldened. I was going to say that. He should just change his name to Saint White.

Speaking of which, there is money at the Local Level of Government, especially in a state like Lagos, apart from that, you might also want to consider the fact that Chief Salami was a desperate man, he wanted power at all cost, no matter the consequences, his rival spent money to buy radio, it is only logical that Chief Salami had to up his game, it gave Blackie a not so Herculean task in brainwashing the man..

Maybe for desperation, I'll agree, because desperation purely defies logic.

If not, trust me, there's nothing extraordinary about being a local government chairman. A section of my family is into politics... been there.

Roberto Bonifacio.. The Lion himself.. At the mention of his name people tremble.. Am sure some persons regarded him as an evil demigod..

Mr Gold Osagie.. If Chief Salami has already disappeared before Roberto gets to him, then you're in trouble.. I know Roberto can track him down but in the fury of temporary loosing out on Chief Salami, he might just transfer the aggression on you..

Officer John Balewa and Mr Peter Black are in great danger.. If only they knew what they're messing with..

Thanks for the update Larrysun

This is all on Basky! His grandfather, old man Balè warned him to let go! If he hadn't been hellbent on finding Peter still, he'd never have found out about the diamond being stolen... he'd never have gone to Salami's house..

Mr Gold would never have remembered about the Boniface diamond and hastily acted.

You really did hit the nail on head. I think I must also add that the owner of this forum, Seun Osewa is the stingy one. This guys(I mean the writers on literature here on nairaland)has contributed so much so nairaland. They bring so much traffic to nairaland. I can't tell you how many times I log on juat to read some stories. I am always glued to literature section and spends close to 10hrs a day on this section. Seun makes so much from this guys and it won't take anything awqy from him if he shows appreciation to this guys.

Of note is TBM(TheBlessedMan) who accomplished over 1million views on one of his treads and others too numerous to mention, who have gotten more that 300views. This translates to mega pay for Seun and he smiles to the bank but this guys gives their time, energy and resources to make millions of us happy for nothing, except the meagre 5k monthly for best writer. It speaks volume tge type of person Seun Osewa is.

I am of the opinion that Seun should compensate those who takes their time to write and bring traffic to his site.

We have sites that pays for just commenting on threads and also some that pays for writing, so @Seun should do the needful and encourage this guys.

He had already said what was important at with the first few lines... the others were just extensive and unnecessary.

And truthfully, I don't see any good that Peter Black's presence in her life did. If he hadn't helped her escape, she'd have done her surgery and not become pregnant.

Update 40

***

When Basket heard about the gruesome murder of Chief Salami, the only person he suspected of committing that heinous act was Peter Black. Although he still found it hard to believe that Peter could do something so horrifying but he could not think of anyone else who would want the man dead. Peter must have killed him to shut him up probably to prevent the man from revealing where he lived. Peter Black was covering his tracks. He was still in great doubt that it was Peter who did it; he would not conclude until he uncovered the whole truth. The Peter he knew was incapable of killing a chicken let alone murdering another person in cold blood. But many years had gone by, Peter might no longer be the person he thought he was, at least in that aspect. He could still vividly recall how Peter had escaped from school when fight broke out during the inter-house sports competition in DGS; he almost smiled. Peter was a flight person while he was a fighting man. It was hard to imagine that Peter would be behind the death of Chief Salami.

But all logic pointed to that fact. The man had called him, Basket, to ask about Peter Black the same day he was killed. Surely, Peter was directly or indirectly involved in the man’s death. Basket was more than ever determined to catch Peter Black this time around. Even though evidence might reveal later that he was not the one who killed Chief Salami, there was no way he would not go to jail. He had committed to many crimes to walk away now. All he needed was where he could find the thief; he was ready to give anything to have that information. When Officer Abbah stepped into his office and told him that someone had information about Peter Black’s whereabouts, he had thought the younger officer was playing pranks on him.

“I’m serious, sir,” insisted Abbah, “The person is on the line waiting.”

Basket jumped up immediately. “If this turns out to be one of your dry jokes, I’m going to make you pay badly. I’m not in a god mood today; I won’t tolerate anyone wasting my time or making a fool of me.”

“I swear to you this is not a joke, sir.”

Basket followed the subordinate to the desk and accepted the receiver he offered. He put it against his ear and expected to hear someone laugh somewhere, but that didn’t happen.

“Hello, this is Officer John Balewa,” he said into the receiver, “I heard you have some information about Peter Black.” He was still not sure that this was not a prank.

“Yes, he and his wife just left the hospital.”

It was beginning to sound serious. If it had been a prank, someone would have been laughing by now, but no one was.

“Do you know where they went?” He was not prepared for the reply he received.

“Of course, I have their home address.”

Basket was excited. “Are you sure about what you’re saying?”

“I’m certain.”

“How did you know about Peter Black or his address?”

“I thought your colleague already told you about my profession. I’m a medical doctor.”

“You are?”

“Yes. I have series of newspapers that caption the picture of Peter Black. Unfortunately for him, he and his wife had an accident and I got every piece of information about them. I have their address in their file.”

“Please give me a moment to get a paper and pen. Okay, now you can call the address, please.” He wrote down the address on a piece of paper as the caller dictated. “Thank you so much for your information, doctor.”

“You don’t have to thank me. I’m only doing my civic duty. But please do me a favour; you need to convince his wife to come for the surgery.”

“Surgery? What surgery?”

“We recently discovered that Mrs Black may be cured of her ailment. Unfortunately, the couple turned down the offer.”

“They did? Why?”

“Well, the operation has a fifty-one percent chance of success. They’re not ready to stake on that percentage. But they’re making a grave error. I think Mr Black just want the girl to die.”

“How sure are you that the operation would be successful, doctor?”

“Well, I just told you the chance of survival. She has a two percent advantage over the possibility of mortality.”

“It’s their choice, isn’t it? Thank you for your information once again. Goodbye, doctor.” He cancelled the call before the doctor could protest any further.

He quickly called the available patrol officers. “Listen up everybody. I just got a tip about the whereabouts of the infamous criminal named Peter Black. We have no time to waste. Gather up your arms and let’s move immediately. We’ll be taking the police vehicle along. We may have to arrest both Peter Black and Maria. The latter is his wife but she’s sick and heavily pregnant. You must handle her gently. If anything happen to her, I will have each of your heads. However, Peter Black is the major priority; he’s an elusive bastard. He has successfully eluded the police for years. He’s fast clever, intelligent and crafty. Do not be careless with him or you’ll regret it.”

One officer raised his hand and asked a question. “What if he tries to escape or resists arrest? Are we allowed to gun him down?”

Basket was silent for a moment before answering. “I am bringing the lot of you because I want to avoid total bloodshed. How would he be able to escape from all of you if you’re not being careless? No, you must not shoot him, yet he must not escape from you. This is the time you have to use all your wits to apprehend him. Have I made myself clear?”

“Yes, sir!” the officers chorused.

“You have ten minute to prepare.” He left them and went to his office to make his own preparations.

***

Mr Osagie Gold waited for Officer John Balewa and the men to leave the station before placing the call through. After killing Chief Salami, Robero Bonifacio had visited him and had shown him the picture of Salami’s mangled body. They had threatened to do the same to him and all his family members except he did exactly as he was told. And so Mr Gold had been secretly shadowing his son-in-law and feeding the information to the Roberto. Whenever Basket left the station, he would place a call to Roberto and inform him of the young officer’s location. Only he knew that Roberto had placed some of his men to watch the police stations every day. They might be discreet but Gold had no doubt that they were there. He was also certain that some other men were watching his home, watching his wife watching his pregnant daughter. He knew that by going to Roberto with the information he had, he had succeeded in compromising himself and the lives of his family members.

All he wanted now was Roberto to get his diamond and leave his family the hell alone. He had done everything Roberto had asked of him; he had provided him with the picture of Peter Black when he asked for it. He sincerely hoped that this call he was making now would be the last he would make. He didn’t care about Peter Black or Maria; he gave no damn about them. As far as he was concerned, these two were criminals they deserved to die. If Roberto killed them, then they deserved it. All he wanted was the brutal Italian don to leave his family alone.

“Hello,” he spoke quickly into the phone. He didn’t want any subordinate officer walking into his office and overhearing him. “My in-law has just left the station now. He seems to know the whereabouts of Peter Black this time around. He has the address of where the thief lives and he’s on his way to arrest him now.”

“Are you sure about what you’re saying?” Roberto’s familiar voice asked from the other end.

“I’m very certain. I heard him say it himself.”

“What’s the address?”

“I don’t know. He wrote it down on a paper. Just follow him and he’ll lead you directly to Peter Black. You have to hurry so that you can catch up with him.”

“Good.” The call was cancelled. He had expected Roberto to thank him for the information but the old man was not one to appreciate any favour. He believed that he deserved whatever favour was done to him.

***

Roberto gathered the same men he used when he visited Salami. They were all armed with guns. He had one mission in mind, he would take back his diamond today or he would die in the attempt. A smile crossed his lips as he thought about what he was going to do to the boy named Peter Black. He would torture him a lot worse than he did the unfortunate Salami. To Roberto however, Salami was not unfortunate; the man only lost his life. He was a very lucky man. He had none of his family members in the country. If Roberto had known that he had a wife who left him when he had no more money, he would have hunted down the woman and killed her gruesomely too. But he didn’t know – what a lucky woman.

But Peter Black would not be so fortunate. He had heard that he had a pregnant wife. A perfect victim. He would do a hell of a job on them both. He would take his time to deal with them; he would not give them the luxury of quick death. Whoever tried to stand in his way shall be taken down; nothing, absolutely no one, was going to stop him from getting his diamond and also taking his revenge on the bastard who had the balls to take what belonged to him.

The entered the same jeep and rendezvoused with the others who had been following Officer John Balewa. Basket, on the other hand, was not aware that they were being followed. His attention was too focused on catching Peter Black that he didn’t take notice of the two vehicles tailing them.

He had absolutely no idea how bloody things were soon going to become. He hadn’t the least inkling.

***

As soon as Osagie Gold finished speaking with Roberto, he decided to close early from work. His mind had not been at rest since the moment John Balewa let the station with other armed policemen. What he needed right now was to be with his wife. He would want to protect his wife if anything went wrong. He knew Roberto would not pardon him or his family members if he didn’t retrieve his diamond today.
He opened his drawer and put his pistol in his side holster; he might need it later in the day. As he was about to leave the office, his phone rang.

“Hello,” he said carefully, he was expecting to hear the worst, perhaps the voice of Roberto himself promising repercussion for a botched plan. But it was not the voice of Roberto; it was his wife calling. As soon as he heard her voice, he knew immediately that there’s something wrong. Cecilia never called him in the office except there was an emergency. His heart skipped a beat on hearing her voice.

“Hello, Osagie,” her voice was urgent. “Please come immediately. There’s something wrong over here.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Come immediately. You need to come right now, Osagie. Please come with John.”

“What happened, Cecilia? What’s going on over there?” He was beginning to sweat.

“Come with John, please. We need your help.”

“John is not here. Please tell me what’s happening.”

“I’m in John’s house. Something is terribly wrong. Please drive as fast as you can.”

The call was terminated.

***

Peter Black was holding Maria firmly in his arms and rocking her gently when a knock suddenly sounded on the door. It was insistent. Peter bolted upright. Maria looked worried.

“We have been discovered,” she heard him say.

Once again, she was scared. What she feared was finally coming to pass now. Peter would be taken from her. The first time she felt this way was when Rhoda paid her a visit; she had been so scared that she had to pen down a note for Peter. But she was grateful for one thing now; Peter was with her to the end.

“What are we going to do now?” she asked.

He turned around and smiled at her. “Don’t you worry your pretty head about that. We will be perfectly all right. I have made preparations for this moment, my darling. They are not going to touch you, trust me.”

“What about you?”

“You don’t worry about me. Just stay here while I go and open the door. I have no choice than to open that door. I don’t want them breaking it down. That wood is very expensive.”

He calmly went to the door and opened it. Yinka was at the threshold. He was sweating profusely. It was obvious that he had been running for he was breathing hard. He had to take a moment to catch his breath.

“They’re coming for you, Mr Black!” He finally spoke urgently.

“Who?”

“The police! They’re coming for you. They’re very close! You need to leave now! Immediately! You need to leave. I saw them. They’re already in the street. Please take your wife and escape.”

“How did you know it was me they were coming for?”

“I overheard Doctor Rukewe speaking to one Officer John Balewa about an hour ago. He gave him the address of this place! Please you need to leave now if you don’t want to be arrested.”

Peter immediately went into an inner room and grabbed a bag. Everything he needed was contained in that bag. He returned to the living room and held Maria by the hand.

“Baby, we need to leave now.”

The both left the building as quickly as they could. Maria’s heavy pregnancy seemed to slow them down a bit. While Yinka was trying to hurry them along, Peter was gentle with his wife. He understood her situation. He wished they could find a cab now but the street seemed deserted.

They were moving down the road as fast as they could, away from the direction Yinka had reportedly seen the car. If he had seen the two cars following behind the police car and the dangerous men contained in it; he would have been horrified to say the least.

Then the first car came to focus, it was the police car. Peter looked behind him and saw Basket sitting beside the driver in the front seat. Then he saw the second car that tried to overtake the police.

He hurried Maria along but he knew it was futile. The pursuers were going to catch up with them.

A shot rang out and one of the three escapists fell into the sand. The ground was coloured with crimson red fluid.
