I once visited ELDI (Electronics Development Institute) in Awka. http://eldi.org.ng

Highly motivated director, smart engineers, and they are trying. But the agency is woefully underfunded; most of the high-tech equipment uninstalled and rusting away. In spite of it, they are inventing all kinds of things right here in Anambra (solar street light, inverter, transformer). I'm an engineer so I mean when I say invent.

It won't take up to 50million to make this a world-class agency that can partner with private sector to market their products widely. Yet even this promising agency isn't given the resources to blossom.

Another agency is being formed - instead of fully funding the ones we have. Why? It's like laying foundation for 10 houses but never raising the walls for any of them.

Is it state funded or self?

Can they channel this intelligence to fight corruption or are they planning to use it to loot even more?

Looking at the reactions of people here, it's now clear that Nairaland is home to less-informed fellows.

It's clear that the majority of you guys don't know what AI entails. You also do not know its significance in the development of all fields of human endeavor in the 21st century.

Everyone is jumping and typing nonsense as though the have idea of the subject matter.

Shame!
people typing know what they are saying. I'm C++ programmer . we know our country this is a misplaced priority from the government there other issues that could be tackled, this one is for publicity stunt are you new in this country undecided AI should start from private company not government

It's state funded, one of the institutes of NASENI (National Agency for Science and Engineering) https://naseni.org

Vision: “To create an enabling knowledge driven environment for local mass production of standard parts, goods and services required for the nation’s technology advancement”.

It's a bold vision, but hampered by our government's lack of belief in itself.

We're not less-informed, just cynical of a government's foray into 21st century technologies when it hasn't successfully solved 19th century problems. As in running water and electricity distribution were mostly satisfactory in developed countries by late 1800s. Heck, even the Romans had figured out running water to all fountains and baths in the cities.

See, nothing is wrong with having ambitions and keeping up, but to continue to do things with the same haphazard commitment is just a waste of everybody's time. ALL of the equipment and most of the software will be imported, without any thought of how to make them internally (as in no support for local industries in terms of cheap, guaranteed loan; and they may decide to raise tariffs for it, like they did with solar equipment).

Contracts for buildings with be made (and eaten), the bare minimum equipment will be acquired, and the few intelligent people hired will be frustrated. Instead of that dog and pony show, put the money into solving water. That alone adds value to GDP now that aren't wasting time fetching and worrying about water supply. There are several nice papers illustrating the relationship clean water and economic growth: google "clean water and gdp growth"
