Flutterwave is a foremost African payment platform founded in 2014 by Iyinoluwa Aboyeji and Olugbenga Agboola with the aim of helping Africans and their business competes on a global scale, by providing them with a platform where they can collect secure and seamless payment from customers all over the world in their local currency, and manage their personal finance using an easy to use online app that helps them to better manage their finance.
Before Flutterwave, payment collection by businesses and corporate bodies in Africa was a tedious and tiresome exercise, which made business between African countries and Africa to the rest of the world a very unattractive enterprise. It is alleged that Africa business loses over $200 million annually in revenue to the difficulty associated with payment and unease of doing business in Africa. This has also impacted on the economy of Africa especially with the volume of trade that is lost to other market.
Despite her large population and resource, Africa has some of the lowest number of people who have access to virtual payment and has never had a unified payment solution that caters for all class of business and individuals at the same time. It is estimated that there are about 330 million adults in Africa who lack access to formal financial service and thus represent a large market for Flutterwave. Although recently there has been effort by African Governments to have a more unified and easy mode of business transaction between member states via the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) which Is a trade agreement signed in Kigali, Rwanda, on 21 March 2018 by 27 African Union member states and currently has 54 of the 55 African Union states on board. With all of these success being recorded in the area of having a free trade zone and easy mode of doing business across Africa, it is expected that large volume of payment would need to exchange hands in a very secure and seamless way in order to help sustain the AfCFTA agenda. Thus the importance of Flutterwave in Africa cannot be overemphasized as it might hold the key to the success of the trade agreement.
Flutterwave has two major product Rave and Barter; Rave is a digital solution that allows business and merchants accept online payment from any part of the world from either bank accounts, USSD, or Cards. It is designed to be quick and efficient and allows for online payment in various major currencies like the Nigerian Naira, Kenyan Shillings, British Pounds Sterling, Ghanaian Cedis, US Dollars and the South African Rands. Quite a number of businesses are already using Rave to accept payment as it is so easy to set up and monitor with many more joining each day, the number of positive review on the Flutterwave page is a testimony to this and to how much improvement it has brought to invoicing and payment for most of these merchants. Another great advantage of Rave is because it allows payment to be collected in local currencies, it saves merchants high conversion fees and does not charge any set up or monthly fees. Little wonder most merchants are turning to rave to enjoy valuable business insight that helps to optimize their revenue and better organize their payment.
If Rave is the answer to the age long challenge of payment for businesses, then Barter is the perfect personal finance manager. Barter was designed with the everyday user in mind, and aims to make the users life easier, by giving them the freedom to enjoy life while the barter app takes care of their expenditures. Whether it is bills, utilities, sending and borrowing money, the Barter app can handle it all. With Barter, bank accounts can be added to the app dashboard and funds can be managed in local currencies, so that one can get valuable insight into spending patterns and expenditure. Barter also allows user to create virtual card that can either be linked to their account or not, and also afford user major discounts when added to some major merchants platform like Uber, Megabet e.t.c. The many benefit of Barter is the reason why over 30,000 people are currently using it as their personal finance manager.
There is also a Fly product which is a partnership between Flutterwave and Flywire to help provide payment solution to Nigeria students, patients and businesses and help overcome the many bottlenecks that have characterized payment in the educational and health sector in the country.
Till date Flutterwave has processed over $2.5bn in payments globally, 100 million in transactions and is a partner to over 50 financial institutions in Africa with over 1200 developers working every day to help improve various aspect of the service. Also it is one of the leading Fintech startup with over $20million raised in investment and one of the best performing on the continent with growth of over 550% recorded so far. It also recently got license to process payment in the United Kingdom and Zambia to add to a growing list of countries it operates in.
Flutterwave has come a long way in very few years and has shown that it is here to stay and help more African Business and individual win by providing them the support they need to excel not only in business and in their individual life as well. It is also encouraging collaboration like never before and helping to raise and keep a growing community of developer who are devoted to the brand and creating solutions by Africans for Africa.
Thinking of a payment solution that can help you accept easy and seamless payment from the African continent and overseas countries, help integrate individual payment and business entities, improve payment performance metrics? Or does the idea of reducing unnecessary cost and being in full control of your finance, setting up at zero cost, and ability to keep track of your spending easily appeal to you?
