False equivalence.

Firstly, per capita amount means nothing when a country is determined to improve itself. For example, the per capita for Americans is bigger than Swedish, but Sweden has free education for its citizens, while American students are saddled with debt, ranging from over 35,000 USD on average, to over 100,000 USD. Using your logic, how can you explain that?

Furthermore (as this paragraph succinctly deals with your point), Nigeria has a higher GDP than some European countries such as Ukraine, though, Ukrainians study for free, and has been a top destination for student all over the world to study at their top-quality education. Nairaland is filled with threads about studying in Ukraine. Ukrainian classrooms look similar to the Canadian own, so what's your point?

Even if Nigeria suddenly have the highest GDP per capita right now, with the government and structure in place, it will only descend lower, instead of uplift itself higher. Most importantly, the present-day Nigerian GDP being low to Norwegian is as a result of bad governance. Norwegian GDP is one of the lowest in the developed world just 40 years ago, lower than Nigeria presently, but built itself up. How about that?

You tried to make sense but actually didn't. And your answer is decorated with pride like you are schooling some ignorant stranger. Don't be rude, drop your point, without the unnecessary addendum such as, ''please do not say anything slick''. Arrogance is repugnant undecided

Stop confusing yourself.

How can you compare the lifestyle of Akpos the bachelor and Elder Emmanuel who both work as security guards at a local government office?

Emmanuel has 6 kids whilst Akpos has hopes of pursuing his masters degree.

If this analogy goes above your head then, I'm sorry, nothing can come out of our discussion.

Mention any African university that pays zero tuition, don't forget Nigeria is in Africa and not Europe. I believe the poster mentioned that he's in Canadian university why did you bring up a European example?, let him also mention the tuition fee he paid, his story is not complete. Some UK universities cost as high as €30,000, why isn't it free? we keep comparing ourselves with the best in the world, failing to realize that these people colonized countries like us, they're world powers, no African or black country is a world power for now but don't write us off yet, we will get there

other african countries are getting there but certainly not nigeria.if u travel to small ghana u will then know how underdeveloped nigeria has become.ghana has better network of roads with constant eletricity and well dressed courteous police officers.its only when u travel out of nigeria that u will know that nigeria is really a jungle.

I do not support PDP or APC. I do not even live in Nigeria. Since you decided to bring politics into your post, GEJ's era had oil selling for over $100 a barrel. There were lots of money to go round.
Same is happening in Alberta right now. There is hardship since the crash of oil.
Stop shifting blames to oil! Even if oil sells for $200 today, Buhari would still fail because he has no clues on how to effectively manage resources. The cabals would just keep him in the dark while looting whatever kobo that is in our treasury just the way they're doing currently.

Buhari is notorious for failure! Those who witnessed his reign as military head of state can confirm that Buhari has nothing good to offer Nigerians.

Wetin concern me. if GEJ had oil selling for $600 per barrel, he will fail too. Don't get it twisted. They are both failures. Infact, Nigeria is a failed nation not just because of politicians but because of it's citizen. Now go and watch your BBN since that is what you Nigerian youths are good at.
Lazy Nigerian youths.

Hey Guys,

We need to do better in that country. Imagine a country with educated elites and see who is ruling us. And worst of it is that many Nigerian youths focus on irrelevant things probably scared of being picked up if they talk. If our government was responsible and accountable we would have had a better place.

Actually, this is not a fair comparison.

International students pay an average of 3million naira in Canada per year but Nigerian schools charge an average of say 100k. (Rough estimates)

It's called getting exactly what you pay for. Good class rooms, but it's no big deal.

How much do the citizens pay?... that is what matters. The price of international students has nothing to do with the standard of the school.

Things were much better when GEJ was in office! We enjoyed more electricity supply then. Our health and education sectors faired better than what we have today!

If GEJ had completed another four years and handed over to another informed leader like him, democracy would have gained more grounds in the country while we would have been among the fastest developing economies in the world. Unfortunately, Buhari's government has taken us like 50years backwards!

This is what happens when your economy depends on crude oil and corruption is high among the people not just the politicians. I repeat myself, if GEJ was still the president, it's not going to make any difference. Still going to be a shithole country. PDP or APC are the same thing. Both cut from the same cloth. That is why they decamp left, right and centre. No ideology except to both steal money. Some of us would have easily invested in Nigeria, but it is rare to even find someone that is trust worthy or honest. The people are no different from the politician.

Government of the people, by the people, for the people.

Stop making excuses for a failure like Buhari!
Any economy that is not positively affecting the lives of the people is not working!

I hope you stay in Nigeria and keep practicing your pharmacy cos I don't see how you would scale an evaluating exam if something as simple as basic economics is hard for you to grasp.

You're not in Nigeria and possibly, you also weren't here during GEJ's administration. Yet you want to hinge Buhari's failure on the decline in oil prices! That is the direction of your argument, and your argument is typical of Buhari supporters even here on nairaland. I guess it was also decline in oil prices that caused Buhari's failure in 1983

I was trying to let you know that despite GEJ's inadequacies, he was a much better leader than Buhari and you're so fixated on oil prices. You also failed to take into account the fact that while GEJ paid huge amount of money as subsidy on oil, Buhari has been able to stop payment of oil subsidies, yet he has not been able to account for the gains accruing from the removal.

Talking about comprehension, be informed that under an ideal test condition, you cannot score higher than myself in a comprehension test. Thank you!

How much did you pay before you curse Nigeria, did you pay N50,000 for your tuition?

Maybe you don't know that Atiku's University, Covenant, Babcock and Igbenidion can boast of quality facilities like
these yet they're not as expensive. As you have decided to invest your money in Canadian education what is the need for this backlash? are students like you not paying tuition in the universities I mentioned above? carry your negativity away from here jor

please remove Igbinedion from that list. Thank you.

Let me reply on his behalf. Local students pay about $6K per year. That is 1.5million naira. Foreign students pay 3x of that amount. For a four or 5 years course, that is still alot of money.
You pay for what you get. You can't compare a quality brand to dollarstore brand.
Concordia University, Université de Montréal e.t.c tuition fee is 2000$ for indigenes,
In Canada thousands of indigenes obtained university degree annually without paying a dime due to numerous government scholarship's program.
Questions for you, how much do nigeria government budget for education?

2,000 US dollars or 2,700 CAD or $2,000 CAD per semester is still a lot of money for lots of Canadians (see screenshot below), and this is despite the fact that Quebec is the most socialist province in Canada. It is erroneous to use Quebec schools as a yardstick. Quebec is one out of 10 provinces and 3 Territories. The figure I gave was average for Canada. Some schools even pay more than that.

Do thousands of Canadians speak for the majority of Canadians? it would be nice if you show us a proof or statistics to back up your statement of thousands getting funding without paying dime in fees. If it was that easy, Canada student loans might as well close up shop.

How much the government of Nigeria budgets for education is non of my business. it is Shyte hole country where majority of the populace are corrupt anyway. Even if you budget 1 trillion naira for education in Nigeria, the university governing council, Department and faculty heads, student bodies etc will still find a way of embezzling the funds.
