The management of the University of Benin on Monday cancelled a symposium for students titled “Is Nigeria ripe for a revolution?”

The event was organised by students of the Department of International Studies.

An undergraduate of the institution, who confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters, said, “Students were really anticipating the debate because the topic is of national interest these days.

“All of a sudden, the management came and ordered the students to cancel the debate because of the topic, they told students to choose another topic and another day for the event.”

When our correspondent asked one of the organisers if the symposium would still hold in the coming days, he said, “We are making contacts with other members to see how we can still make the debate hold and even bigger by partnering with the Coalition for Revolution.

“Meanwhile, the event may have to hold outside the university campus since the school’s management wants to dictate to students how to breathe before giving them a breathing space.

“Hopefully, our plans will go accordingly and we will not allow the management dictate to us what to discuss and what not to especially when the discourse is a national issue which would shape the country and give us the kind of country young people want.”

If this turns out to be true, then I don’t really knw wat to say.. coming out of prayers for d country and reading this. it’s a shame how d pple in government is trying to silence everyone. Now academic institutions wants to join them. It’s an academic institution for crying out loud!!!
You all want to subdue voices bt for how long do these people think it will stand? It’s a debate where students will learn and share ideas. Ideas that will bring solutions.
I guess when government officials hears d word revolution what comes to their mind is food don comot for our mouth.. Youths arise!! They want to subdue us. Arise I say again.

Animal farm. That is the best way to describe Nigeria.

They know the day the masses become comfortable with discussing current day realities without being divided around party or religious lines which the school environment will likely achieve ,they, the useless leaders are done for, so they would rather not hear of it.

Typical black man mentality not surprised. Millions of people rather remain in hell because the few that control them may take the remaining 20% of their dividend not minding that they can get the 100% if they raise up one finger and say enough. Reason Africa may never get out of this hell till eternity.

Typical Nigerian mentality. Even Nairaland won't push such topic to front page.

Let's just pretend like there are no issues. It's why we are still where we are.

We can't even have an open discussion on current realities?

the elites have used religion and tribalism to divide the masses, especially this APC admin.

It is the reason Tinubu does same.

They fear united mass. Unfortunately, the masses are not aware.

If someone could be detained just for the inscription on his T shirt, who told the students that the VC would not be 'invited' for allowing such debate in the school under his watch?

This is the type of debate that should be encouraged by authorities so that the idea of revolution could be 'killed' with superior argument, and not by bullets.

The management should assist the students in making the debate a live event for those who will like to follow the debate online
