Nigeria At 59: You Are Not Too Young To Lead by bsmithconcepts1(m): 7:58pm On Oct 06, 2019
“...your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions” – Joel 2:28b (Emphasis mine)

Did you know that the majority of the leaders that transformed their nation’s state was young? Did you know that our current leaders took over governmental affairs in their youths? Did you know that youths taking leadership mantle is more of God’s idea than of men? Did you know that the highest percentage of Nigeria’s population are youths?

Leadership can be positional even political but naturally, it is visionary. A person with a vision naturally assumes the position of a leader with or without their consent. The mantle of leadership falls on such individual and that is why leadership skill development is an essential pursuit of all men. Why? Firstly, man is by his God-given nature as a potential leader.

Also, every man has a vision, whether it is personal, communal or universal. Every of this vision puts such person in the line of leadership. If it comes to the least, everyone is required to lead themselves. So leadership is a general call for every man, no one is left out. We have the responsibility to take up the call and enjoy the satisfaction and victorious living.

The #NotTooYoungToRun campaign was pushed and got approved, great news for young people who are interested in joining politics in Nigeria. Yet, this opportunity is yet to be maximized because most young people feel they will not be allowed by older politicians. There is something though they cannot stop you as a young person from doing and that is leading.

David was anointed king at a young age, with a rejected king still on the throne. The king did not allow David to assume his rightful political position until his death. Still, he could not stop David from leading; David led youths like himself disgruntled and without hope. And by the time he was assuming his political position as king, they had become mighty men of valour.

During the reign of David as king, there was so much prosperity that silver was common. This means every household was rich, how was this possible? David had a team of great people, which he started to lead when he was young. Also, he was not enjoying luxury when he started leading; he actually was on the run for his life. So he too was in distress, but still, he lead.

You, like David, can lead where you are, all you need is to look for the one thing all leaders have in common. The quote at the beginning of this post highlights it, you need a vision. Visions are not just for the old, meaning leadership is not for only the old. You as a young person possessing a vision can begin to lead your generation to form a better Nigeria.

For some of us familiar with the social media space, we know of John Obidi, Edirin Edewor, and their likes. They are thought leaders in their various fields influencing thousands of people, young and old influencing them to improve their lives and lead. They are contributing their quota in realizing their Nigerian dream; you too can join the train.

You don’t need to become the president of Nigeria before you effect the desired vision, all you need is to have a vision and take the lead. But what about the bad leaders what should we do about them? My advice is simple, be the yeast. The yeast mission is to influence the whole flour, but it does not do so with noise, silently it rises the dough till it is everywhere.

When you begin to lead, focus on your field, pray for our nation and her leaders. Be focused and multiply until you are everywhere, even in the political space. Then we will have leaders that are visionaries not just vying for positions but also ensuring the elections are honest. Leaders who will keep the top government officials accountable and ensure they exceed their promises.

It all starts with you realising that you are not too young to lead and actually begin to lead.
