There is something I find abnormal about the expression "Former President Olusegun Obasanjo."

1. Is "Former President" a title?
2. Is there a "Current President Olusegun Obasanjo"?

Anytime I see this expression in the Nigerian media, it jars my mind.

What is "former" is only "the president," not Olusegun Obasanjo. The man has not changed his name.

So why not qualify it better by saying something like:
"Former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo"
Or
"former president, Olusegun Obasanjo"?

In reality, there are no former presidents. "President" is a title for anybody who has been the president of a country. So it should actually be: "President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Nigerian leader."

But if you don't want to address him or any former leader as "President," please don't address them as "Former President Olusegun Obasanjo" or "Former President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua" or "Former President Goodluck Jonathan." Just say: "Former Nigerian President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan," etc.

This is my view. If you don't like it, do it the way that suits you. But Please make sure you have an explanation for it when you are asked to defend it. Don't just tell us: "That is our house style" or "That is the correct way to say it."
