Sleekbaby: We listen to the beginning sound of the word following the indefinite articles a and an. If it sounds like a consonant, we use a. If it sounds like a vowel, we use an. Some letters can sound like a vowel or consonant. When the following word is an abbreviation, listen to how the abbreviation is spoken. We hear a vowel sound at the beginning of MBA (em-be-a) and a consonant sound at the beginning of NASA. Incorrect a hour, a MBA, a orange, an horse, an university All of the following examples are correct. Listen to the beginning sound of the word, abbreviation, or number that follows the indefinite article. Correct a horse, an hour, a HUD loan, Correct a historic site, an honor, an html code, Correct an orange, a one-horse town, a $20 bill, Correct a pencil, a big elephant, an egotistical person, Correct an MBA, a US ambassador, an iPhone, Correct an apple, an egg, an inexpensive car, Correct a unicorn, an umbrella, a used car 1 Like 1 Share |

well for me I think you are correct (That is 'A' is the correct article). Back in undergraduate days, I often heard my colleagues saying "I AM 'AN' HISTORIAN" instead of "I AM 'A' HISTORIAN". we often neglect the pronunciation of the H sound which sometimes is not the case. All I ll say is that you should go to your child's school and challenge the teacher. #Nobody is an island of knowledge |

Sleekbaby:. A is used for Happy and Hunter in English but an for Hour and Honest ....The problem is many teachers of English in Nigeria are not Language specialists. The only use ideas and their first language orientation to teach the subject.........Recently I was in a school where I saw a demonstration paper on the wall with the following: English speech sounds: A B C. D ...Z .The question is are they letters or or speech sounds ? Some English make up teachers don't know there are only Two alphabets in English namely Consonants and vowels while there are 26 letters..... Only those who are language specialists can know the rudiments of the language. |

Let me contribute as a graduate of OAU from ENGLISH department but LITERATURE IN ENGLISH to be precise.. English as a language is very complicated.I personally can say English is crazy if you don't study it very well as in real studying. You might not know you're fumbling or have been fumbling To cut the long story short, English Language isn't like our native language here that every word's pronounced starting from the 1st letter e.g Knife(K is useless when pronouncing) now seeing any word that starts with "H" does not mean you should pronounce "H" with it or "h" sound is pronounced in the word.. Using "hour" as an example it starts with vowel sound which is "a" so that means when you want to use your article it will be "an" as in "an hour" but in "HAPPY" its case is different letter h and /h/ isn't silent makes it to go with an article that goes with consonant which is "a" GOD BLESS

People sometimes use "an" for the word "history" "An historic occasion" but this is now frowned upon Apart from that all other words where the "h" is pronounced must be introduced with "an" So your teacher was wrong, don't mind her |

kstyle2: A HAPPY NOT AN HAPPY The rule is pretty constant: If you pronounce the word with an initial vowel sound, use the article an. If you pronounce the word with an initial consonant sound, use the article a. The rule is constant; it is the pronunciation that changes. Most English speakers would not say "an hospital" or "an hotel." Some English dialects feature the elimination of the "h" sound at the beginning of these words, so those speakers say, "an ospital" or "an otel" and it sounds perfectly natural. Most English dialects' phrases are not considered grammatically correct. I've never seen where "an happy" is used in modern English, I don't know about old English. 3 Likes |

tfash96: Tell them. Although, my initial post may have been unnecessarily stereotyped. But truth is, linguistic interference is the problem with most ESL speakers. Yorubas have problems with letter 'h', especially in words beginning with 'h'. Some native Igbo speakers have problems with pronouncing words with clusters of consonants like 'r' and 'L'. The Hausas also have theirs. But in this particular post, the lady in question should be more informed. It's a shame. Tell a Yoruba to say this; ''Can her hair earn her an A'', and you'll get my point. |
