The blame rests solely on the lawmakers who should have reviewed this old law.

Also, 30% is still too much for custom duty on luggage.

This Ali is very cheap. Why is the duty not #570,000.00 ? After all, that will help in protecting the so called local industry as claimed by Buhari and his friends. With this in place only Buhari and his friends are the only ones who can afford anything foreign.

It is the FG that wants the reliance on them. Restructure now. They wont. Cause politicians who want to occupyAso Rock want to control oil n gas resources while those from which it comes live in poverty.

The law fixes the duty at 30%. It remains so until it is amended.

Have you not heard the custom boss complaining about the unproductive law? Tell the member and senator representing your constituency to sponsor the bill for amendment.

In most western countries, you have very good luggage allowance for their citizens. I'm sure of one country that allows $800 worth of goods duty free.

White man is still supreme until we collectively prove otherwise by forming a sane society.

Nigerians, let's stop this blame game. This law has been in existence for decades it just came into use when someone is doing oversabi and the other one wants to get quick cash off the situation. What we should have talked about is how to raise the amount to a substantial amount. Most Nigerian laws on fees don't grow as inflation rate grows.

This is what you get when your government is being run by greedy, selfish baboons without a basic understanding of economics. The lawmakers are VIPs (very important parasites) who will continue to exist above above this particular law because the custom inspection is discretionary and dirty custom officials dare not dip their filthy paws inside a VIP luggage.

This APC government is trying to balance their budget using increased taxes and duties leveraged on a population where 50℅ of the working population is either under-employed or totally unemployed.

What did anyone expect from a man with no secondary school certificate (who is now probably senile) surrounded and constantly manipulated by jobbers and straight-up rogues.

I agree with you. Ppl that are shouting haven't travelled abroad. Most European airports ask you to declare the cash equivalent of goods over a certain amount. Failure to do so means you are smuggling into the country. The lady who claimed she bought it from a duty free shop knew what she was doing. If she didn't buy from the duty free shop, she would have paid tax in her departure country.

I agree with you. The 50k limit is too small. Just like the 5k,10k they ask husbands' to pay as monthly child support

Why would someone spend that much to buy a handbag? Haba... We sef nor de try shaaa. Though I'm sure that bag may not cost up to that but the mere fact that it's designers caused the customs to search for the true value. The least she should have done was ask her husband to send her the receipt via Whatsapp instead of allowing them to compute the cost themselves. She de form social media activist isssorite

Nigerians are too too emotional to reason with facts. How can someone subject a luggage or personal effect of about $140 to import duties? If we only we can reason together for a moment, then we can agree that our leaders and law enforcers have gone MAD!

(1) You leave Nigeria through any of the airports, you pay for carrying any small foodstuffs

(2) You come back with anything worth $140, you pay duties.

Who did us this kind thing?

Nothing kills the economy of poor nations like taxes and duties.

N50,000 is too small. Im sure that amount waa fixed like 20 years ago.

They should update it to like $2,000 in my opinion. I'll like to ask a professional in the industry about what the best practice

Sadly, Nigeria never learn anything useful from other countries. When the Western countries experienced economic downturn, they gave tax breaks in addition to bailout funds. These help catalyze economic growth, and provide employment. In Nigeria we tax more in the face of economic hardship.

Lol... You’re the typical Nigerian ! Always calling upon God or some other supernatural entity.

We are in a democracy ... and in a democracy the rule of law is sacrosanct , and who enacts these laws? The reps of the people (NA).

Why? Because they’re deemed to be acting on the wishes of their people (which is then balanced out “2/3” to ensure absolute majority )

I’ll keep saying these things , FG is not our problem , neither the Judiciary ... Nigeria’s problem is the NA! And docile citizens.

It’s just a question of amending a ridiculous law!

So d bulk of d problem lays at d feet of d legislature and d executive is innocent
