Lawmakers were on Thursday shocked when the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, stated that N9.2 billion earmarked for overhead cost of the Police in the 2019 Budget cannot even fuel its operational vehicles for six months.
Defending the 2020 budget, the Inspector General of Police revealed that a proposal of N63.9 billion was submitted by the police for capital project in 2019, but on the envelope for the approval, it was slashed to N12.3 billion.
Adamu added: “In the case of heads cost appropriation, the total appropriation of N9,250,565,306, which is not even enough to fuel the fleet of operational vehicles at an average of minimal fuel consumption of 30 litres per day for more than six months, has not even been fully released.
“So far, N6.5 billion has been released, leaving a balance of N2.7 billion, which is yet to be released.”
Adamu lamented that despite the continuous increase in the security challenges in the country, it was amazing that the Police budget keeps on declining.
He said: “The primary function of the Nigeria Police as the lead agency in internal security matters is being challenged by inadequate funding.”
After the presentation of the Inspector General of Police, the National Assembly joint Committee called and Executive Session, which lasted for more an hour.
