Film on Nigerian sex workers disqualified from Oscars

The Academy of Motion Pictures has rejected a second entry for next year's Oscar award for Best International Film.

The Austrian movie, Joy, is about Nigerian sex-workers in Vienna, but the Academy says it has too much dialogue in English.

Last week it turned down Nigeria's own submission, Lionheart, for the same reason.

The rejections come in the year when the Academy re-named the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar award to Best International Film for "films that are not in the English language".

News about the film's disqualification was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter website, which said the Academy found that two-thirds of the dialogue in Joy was in English.

"As we do every year, the Academy is in the process of reviewing the films submitted for the International Feature Film category to determine whether they meet our eligibility rules. The film Joy, submitted by Austria, was just reviewed and is ineligible because only 33% of the dialogue is non-English," a statement from the Academy says.

The movie was written and directed by Austrian filmmaker Sudabeh Mortezai.

Renowned film director Ava DuVernay has faulted the Academy's decision:

This is getting irritating. Dont we Nigerians read? We know we cannot compete on the average movie categories, so we opt for the international category. Unfortunately, the international category has strong rules of the language of communication not being majorly in English. When the movies eventually get rejected, we now claim racism. Why are African themed movies like "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" not going for international feature film category? Didn't African-themed "Last King of Scotland" win an oscar for best actor in the past?

I think the criterion is obviously fair enough.

No English-speaking movie deserves this award, no need going haywire over this.

I think the International Community is trying to pass a message, they want to see us more through our own culture and LANGUAGE.

Producers shouldn't be scared to act in our own language, they should add SUBTITLES.

We are Africans not Europeans.

Its even badt that in most homes now, the KIDS don't speak their mother tongue, imagine Kids born and bred in West or East that can't speak a word of Yoruba/Ibo.

I hope are our modern day Yoruba movie producers and directors are observing.

Having consecutive English sentences and conversations in a supposedly Yoruba film is a no-no!

Yoruba movie producers and directors must choose an hustle - English or Yoruba films.

Trying to mix both and then adding other non-Yoruba languages in a Yoruba film is quite ridiculous if not stupid, to say the least.

Note: The film is an Austrian film about Nigerian sex workers in Austria. It was submitted by Austria, not Nigeria.
