The first iteration of the Altima appeared in the 1993 model year and continued until 1997. It was meant to be a successor to the Stanza, and in fact, it actually came initially with the Stanza and Altima emblem.

The only thing the 2002 Altima shares with its predecessor is its name. The Altima was slightly smaller than the Accord and the Camry, but larger and more expensive than the popular Toyota Corolla and the Honda Civic, also it came only with a four-cylinder engine. Obviously, everything has changed. This year marks the first time that Altima has offered a V6 option. It's the same 3.5-liter engine that powers the 2002 Maxima, and it's one of the best V6 engines available today.

The Altima is initially available as five models: 2.5, 2.5S, 2.5SL, 3.5SE and 3.5SL. The first three use a newly revised version of the 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 175 hp, the other two a new generation of the proven 3.5-liter V6 with now 270 hp. There will also be an Altima hybrid in early 2007. Two transmissions are available, the standard six-speed manual transmission or the continuously variable transmission. Standard equipment includes cloth seats, 16-inch steel wheels, halogen headlights, electric power steering, vehicle information display and a smart key with push button start. For 2007, the Nissan Altima has been completely redesigned.

The new exterior shape of the Nissan Altima brings an enlarged interior, which has been designed with a lower bonnet for a more open feel. The Altima receives two new engines and a four-wheel drive, which distinguishes it from the bestsellers in the segment.

The standard engine is a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 188 hp and a torque of 180 pound-feet. This setup reaches an EPA-estimated 28 miles per gallon city, 39 mpg highway and 32 combined with front-wheel drive.

Also new and more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is a technological milestone for the automotive industry as it incorporates a mechanical system that adapts the cylinder's compression ratio to performance requirements. In general, it helps the engine to achieve a higher level of efficiency and performance.
