Explicit knowledge: it is easily codifiable, expressed in words and numbers and shared in the form of data etc. It can be readily transmitted across individuals formally and systematically.
Tacit knowledge: this is hard to formalise, making it more difficult to communicate or share with others i.e creative process, feelings, practical experience etc."

Project Management: Do You Know This Creeping Monster That Attacks Your Scope?
14 Days of PM - Day 10

_By Seyi Oladeji,
MBA,M.Inf.Sci,PMP,CISA,COBIT5_

It happens slowly.
.
So slowly that it takes you by surprise.
.
It usually starts with a small change request. Just a minor readjustment of the Project Scope. Nothing you'd even want to bill for. This is followed by one more request. Then another. And another.
.
Before you know it, the “small change” has turned the Project into a different beast altogether. Instead of five deliverables, you now have 15. But the budget and the deadline are the same.
.
“Scope Creep in Project Management is one of the biggest causes of Project failure”, quoting Slyvia Moses.
.
According to the PMBOK Guide, _“Scope Creep is the uncontrolled expansion of Project Scope without adjustments to Time, Cost, and Resources”._
.

Another commonly-used analogy of Scope Creep is that of a frog in hot water. ```The frog will not notice it's in hot water until it's nearly too late```, and he's already boiling. Just like the frog, you usually won't know Scope Creep has happened until it's too late and an overrun or delay(s) has occurred.
.
.
CHANGES ARE BOUND TO HAPPEN ON A PROJECT

Yes, of course, as only God has the ability to plan well with his absolute knowledge of the future.
.
We would simply try our best to plan well, then put in strategies to handle variations and changes as they occur.
.
The key lesson from proper Project Management Techniques is that the changes have to be managed professionally. In fact, this is the whole essence of _“Perform Integrated Change Control”_ Process, one of the 49 Processes according to PMI.
.
.
Scope Creep is Bad

This can be very painful for any Project Manager. It could kill profit, lead to overtime through delays and can also lead to missed deadlines.

```What is even more painful is that, after all the “sacrifices”, it usually leads to unsatisfied customers in the end```.
.
.
On a Project, Scope Creep is close by, if:
- The Project Scope is not clearly defined
- You are allowing Direct and Unmanaged contact between the client & team members
- Your client underestimates the complexity of the Project [this is particularly frustrating; bad for you if you cannot communicate properly]
- You get feedback last minute
- Your team members are not trained to avoid this.
There are more, but these are the major ones.
.
There are lots of tips on preventing scope creep but summarily, adopting proper Project Management practices would help. Area of focus here is ensuring that _“Perform Integrated Change Control”_ process is done & managed well.
We would discuss more on this later, God willing.
Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a deliverable-oriented breakdown of a project into smaller components.It is an important input to lots of other processes. If poorly done, all other dependent processes automatically inherit the errors.
