We sat together on the sofa and watched the television. She snuggled over to my while my left hand encircled her waist. She held my hand too and our picture was that of a loving couple, relaxing after their supper.

“Would you like to take some wine?” she asked. “I brought a good bottle of wine along. It’s in the fridge.”

“We can have that later.”

“Or do you want milk?” There was a sly smile on her face.

“Milk?”

“Yes. The most natural one in the universe.”
Now, I got it. I smiled. “I’ll have that before going to bed.”

After chatting for some time, it was time for the nightcap, and I chose the natural milk. Early in the morning of the following day, I took another one. She was glad to be giving me and the two of us actually relished the act.

She prepared coffee and made toast bread as we prepared for the office.

“I’ll be driving myself to the office today,” she said.

“Okay. No problem about that.”

I realized she was actually not only playing the role of a lover but that of a wife. Now, how would I put this? Was it that Kike was my Lagos wife, while Yetunde was my Abuja wife? This was not too pleasant, but I shrugged it off.

For that day and the next couple of days, Yetunde and I continued to live together.

The senator didn’t mention anything about it, so I supposed Dapo was only bluffing. On Friday, I told Yetunde I would be travelling to Lagos.

I was surprised by her reaction.

“You can’t leave me all alone here,” she said. “That would not be fair.”

“Are you not travelling too?”

“For what? I’ll only be going to Lagos once in a while.”

“You don’t miss mummy?”

She smiled. “Mum only misses her husband, and he will there for her. The only person I will miss is you.”

“But I need to travel. Almost every weekend, I rejoin my family in Lagos.”

“Make this weekend an exception. I’ll love it.”

I sighed. Well, it would me I would inform Kike that I would not be coming due to the load of work, as I had done sometimes.
I called her to explain to her.

She didn’t seem particularly happy, but I said she should not worry as another weekend was around the corner.

“Just be careful, darling,” she said. “Be careful of Abuja babes.”

How prophetic of her! This Kike always seemed to think smart. She had always been like that, so I was not surprised.

That weekend, it was like Yetunde and I were on the honeymoon we did not get to have. We did nothing but chat, eat, drink and make love.

She had changed a lot, I must say. Her conservative views about sex was gone as she gave it to me anytime, anywhere and anyhow.

Dapo seemed to have given up on us. We were unfettered in our desires and acts. On Monday to Friday, we went to our different places of work and came together in the evening. That Friday, Yetunde still showed some reluctance in seeing me travel.

“I’ve got to travel this weekend,” I told her. “I don’t have any excuse to give Kike again.”

“Okay,” she finally conceded. “I’ll stay behind and wait for you.”

“Alright.” I kissed her.

“Let me drive you to the airport,” she offered.

“Oh, do I have to bother you in that way?”

“No. It’s not bother.”

She drove me to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. I took my usual local airline to Lagos. We arrived Ikeja few minutes after six in the evening.

It was almost an hour later when I got down at Lawanson with my light travelling bag.
She was in the kitchen with Steve when I got home. Steve ran up to hold me.

“Daddy,’ the boy said.

I lifted him to my chest. “Hello, Steve. Hope you’ve not been disturbing mummy.”
He shook his head.

“Good boy.” I put him down. His mother came to give me a hug as if I had been away for several months.

“Hello, my love.”

I held her lovingly. “Hello, darling.”

We kissed briefly.

“So, how’s everything?”

“All is fine. We missed you.”

“I missed you too.” I sniffed the air. What’s cooking?”

She smiled. “I’ve made fried rice, but right now, I’m frying plantain.”

“That’s good.

“I missed you too.” I sniffed the air. What’s cooking?”

She smiled. “I’ve made fried rice, but right now, I’m frying plantain.”

“That’s good. That’s very tantalizing.”

I went to the bedroom to change with Steve tagging along.

“What did you buy for me?” the boy asked.

I knew he would ask that question and I was already prepared for him. I opened my bag and, from a nylon, brought out two packs of chocolate drinks.

They were very cold before but now they were still cool.

He took them from me happily and ran off to probably show his mum. I changed to casuals of jeans and t-shirt and went to join them in the kitchen.

“How was Abuja?” she asked.

I smiled and nodded. The image of working in the office and making love to Yetunde in the house flashed through my mind. “Abuja is very fine.”
We later sat together and ate like one happy, loving family.

After the dinner, Kike brought up the matter of the whole family living in Abuja again.

“I thought we’ve concluded this matter,” I replied.

“Look, the term of the Senator will end next year and there will new general elections. I don’t know if he will be seeking re-elections, or if his party will even nominate him. This job is not a very reliable one. I can assure you that once is term ends and he’s not coming back to the senate, I will come back to Lagos.”

She nodded. “I understand you. All the same, I have this feeling that it is better we’re together.”
I grinned at her and held her left hand, squeezing it in what I hoped would be a reassuring gesture.

“You have nothing to worry about, my dear. Let’s see how next year will be before we make any move.”

She didn’t seem to agree but she nodded all the same.

* * *

About nine o’clock, we were in the sitting-room, watching the television when Yetunde called. My heart raced fast. I would have to be discrete about how I answered the call.

“Hello, thanks for calling,” I said fast. “I arrived in Lagos well, and everything is okay. Right now, I’m with my wife and kid. All is well.”

Yetunde laughed across the line.

“She’s there with you?” she asked.

“Yes. We thank God all went well.”

“I miss you, darling.”

Thank God the television was loud. Kike would not be hearing her own part of the conversation.

I grinned. “Thanks for calling. God bless your family. Good night.”

I cut off the conversation and breathed in deeply. How could Yetunde be saying that kind of thing after I had told her I was with Kike? Well, it was good of me to play smart. I thought that was all for that, but I was wrong. About two minutes later, my phone rang again. It was Yetunde on the line again.

I was exasperated. I picked up the call.

“You don’t have to say a thing,” she said. “Just listen.”

“Okay.”

“I just called to say I love you.”

I sighed. The sound from the line indicated that it had been disconnected.

“Who was that?” Kike asked.

I shook my head. “I couldn’t hear a thing. Poor network, I think.”

It was a relief that Yetunde didn’t call my line again that evening. When she called on Saturday morning, Kike was in the kitchen.

“I miss you,” she said.

“I miss you too, but I’ll soon be in Abuja. In just about forty-eight hours, I’ll be there.”

“I know. All the same, I miss you so much.”
I laughed shortly. “It’s alright. Just a little time more.”

“Alright, I’ll be expecting you.”

“Okay.”

Things appeared to move fast that weekend.

Early Monday morning, I left home to take the first flight to Abuja. Before leaving, my dear wife reiterated her desire that I should steer clear of Abuja babes.

“My darling, as I’ve told you before, don’t you worry about a thing.”

I handed her substantial cash and left for the airport. By the time I got to my Kubwa apartment, Yetunde had left for her work. She however left a note for me.

Dear, I hope you had a nice trip. I’ll be calling you later. I love you.

Yetunde.

I sighed and grinned. I hoped this lady would not drive me crazy. Or was it I that was driving myself crazy? I took my backpack and left for the office.

The senator did not come around until noon. He sent for me as soon as he did. In his office was his Special Assistant on Special Duties. We discussed some official issues such as the constituency projects. Several minutes later, the meeting was over.

The other aide and I moved towards the door, but the senator called me back.

“Sit down, Henry, there’s this matter we need to discuss”.

I returned to my seat.

“First, I need to clear the air,” he began. “Is it really true that Yetunde is living with you?”
I wasn’t surprised to hear him ask. The way Dapo had reacted showed that sooner or later, Senator Osho would get to know what was going on.

“Yes. She said she would have to put up with me pending the time she would get accommodation from her place of work.”
He shook his. “Sorry but she was not saying the whole truth. I already gave her a flat to stay. Dapo had earlier given her where to stay. What other accommodation was she talking about?”

I was surprised to hear that the senator had given her a flat which she rejected. I was at loss over what to say.

“That apart, why’re you two now suddenly back together?” he went on. “What are you two up to?”

“She’s … she’s only putting up with me,” I stuttered.

“Is that so?” There was complete look of incredibility on the face of the senator.

“Look, Henry, you broke her heart once, you must never break her heart again.”

I opened my mouth but no word came out.
“Whatever you do with her, just don’t break her heart again. Have a nice day.”

He was through with me. I stood up and went back to my office.

What did he mean I must not break her heart again? Why couldn’t he and Dapo believe that she was the one making the move? How could I break her heart?

If they didn’t want any affair between Yetunde and me anymore, why couldn’t they call her and warn her to stay off? Why was I the one to be harangued?

I shrugged. This theory of not breaking her heart was confounding. I shook my head. What was the essence of starting a relationship such as this with so many ‘monitoring bodies’?

Later in the evening, as Yetunde and I longed in the sitting-room, I told her the conversation I had with her father.

“He kept saying I shouldn’t break your heart. Now, why is everyone thinking that’s what I intend to do?”

I noticed that half of your update is always a repeat from the previous update. Please can you skip it and give fresh update.

Once again thanks.

Henry should continue when he will start paying he won't remember his foolishness again.

Even Yetunde herself I wonder where the sudden love came out from, why is she loving a married man, she ended their courtship because of infidelity but is now gladly staying him though he is married.

Later in the evening, as Yetunde and I lounged in the sitting-room, I told her the conversation I had with her father.

“He kept saying I shouldn’t break your heart. Now, why is everyone thinking that’s what I intend to do?”

Yetunde smiled. “I suppose they feel concerned because of what happened the other time. They don’t want you to do something that will wrench my heart again.”

I sighed. “There shouldn’t be any problem if the essence of this relationship is to express mutual passion. I believe that once you find the man you love and you will like to spend the rest of your life with, this relationship will cease and fizzle out. Then, it won’t look like I’m breaking someone’s heart, again?”

She continued with her smile. “What if you are the very man I’m in love with?”

I grinned and shook my head. “That will be complicated, won’t it? Going by the fact that I’m married. But then, I believe that you’ll soon find a man that really loves you and who is ready to marry you.”

She chuckled but didn’t say a word.

“By the way,” I continued. “Your dad says he gave you an apartment? Why did you reject it?”

Her answer was prompt. “Because I want to be with you.”

I frowned slightly. “Really? Is that really so?”

“Of course. I wanted to be with you and here I am.”

“What about the apartment you said you would soon have from your employer? When are they giving you and when are you moving there?”

She laughed shortly. “Sorry, there’s no such thing.”

I chuckled and shook my head. “This is interesting.”

She came to rub her hand on my chest. “I don’t know, but for the last couple of months, I have this strong feeling to have you back in my life. I told dad I would like a federal job and I would want it to be here in Abuja; all because I want to be close to you.”

I stared at her. “You got a job and decided to live in a city because you wanted to be close to a guy?”

“Yes. Because I realized I’m in love with the guy.”
Her lips came for mine. That ended the conversation. The kiss was deep. My hand went to her boobs and fondled them.

She unbuttoned my shirt while I pulled off her blouse. That gave me unfettered access to the boobs. I fondled and licked the nipples while she moaned softly.

The desire was so fervent that we had each other right there in the sitting-room. Somehow, I remembered when I had Bisola in my sitting-room at Lawanson and Yetunde barged in to find us in that passion-filled scene.

Now, I imagined briefly that it was Kike that barged in. She too was pregnant, although not as heavy as Yetunde had been. Would Kike express shock and collapse as Yetunde had done?

But then, these were just lurid thoughts. Kike did not come in and no one interrupted our love making session.

* * *

For the next couple of months, Yetunde continued to stay with me. In my naïve mind, I was praying that she would soon find the man that would love her and would be ready to take her to the altar.

I prayed that she would find Mr. Right that would take her away from my apartment and I would stop my sexual escapade with her. It was one prayer I hoped God would answer sooner than later.

It was a shock when I discovered that the prayer might not be answered, or at least might not be answered for a long time. One Tuesday evening, we were together in my bedroom.

It was a cool night and I was full of desires for her. We had eaten our dinner and the only thing left for me to eat was her heart.

“You seem to be looking more beautiful every day, Yetunde darling.”

She smiled pleasantly. “Seem to?”

“Oh, really, you’re looking more beautiful every day.”

Now, she was delighted. “Thanks. You’re looking more handsome than ever too.”

As usual, my mouth explored her nipples.

“Oh, really, you’re looking more beautiful every day.”

Now, she was delighted. “Thanks. You’re looking more handsome than ever too.”

As usual, my mouth explored her nipples.

“I’ve got something to say,” she said.

“Uhm, uhm,” I muttered, still engrossed in my sucking.

“I am eight weeks pregnant,” she blurted out.

I stopped my action immediately. “What did you say?”

She looked at me and smiled. “I’m carrying your baby, Henry.”

I was astonished. “You mean you’ve not been on pills? How could you not be on pills?”

“I didn’t want to be on pills.”

“What? Why?”

I was rattled but she was the opposite of that. She looked very calm and the smile still remained on her face. In a nutshell, she seemed to be glad that she had got what she wanted.

“I want to carry your baby, honey.”

“What?” I moved slightly away from her. I realized that I had suddenly lost my sexual appetite. Why was she talking like this?

“But you know you can’t have the baby,” I said vehemently. “It’s not right to carry my baby!”

“Says who?”

Her question was like having a cup of cold water thrown at my face. “How could you be talking like this, Yetunde?”

She remained very calm. “How could you be talking like that too? What’s wrong with having the baby I lost the other time replaced?”

I shook my head. “I can’t believe you. Have you forgotten that I’m married?”

“So what?”

I stared at her. “What do you mean, so what? This will ruin my marriage!”

She was silent. Now, what kind of idea was this? How could she be talking of carrying my baby? I was unnerved but I tried to calm myself down.

“Now, listen,” I said. “I know a good doctor at Wuse. I’m sure he will handle the abortion professionally and there’ll be no complication whatsoever.”

Her face immediately became stern.

“Don’t mention that again. I’m not ever going to have an abortion.”

I couldn’t believe her recalcitrant. She must be joking, I thought gravely. “How could you have a baby outside wedlock? Will that not be a stigma?”

She suddenly laughed. Yes, Yetunde laughed over what I had said as if it was a very funny thing.

“Can you see yourself? Can you see the way you look as if hell was about to fall?”

I breathed in deeply. Well, she could laugh it off because I was the one distressed. I was the one that would have to explain to my spouse how I got another lady pregnant. That reality would put an end to whatever trust or confidence she had in me.

“Listen …” I was saying.

“No, you listen. I’m keeping this baby, and there’s nothing you do or say that will change that. The earlier you understand that, the better.”

I remained nonplussed. Why on hell did she want to keep the baby? Why?

* * *

I was angry with her adamant posture. That evening, I was too upset with her to sleep in the same bedroom. I opted to sleep in the sitting-room and she didn’t raise a brow. I had a disturbed sleep.

How would Kike feel if or when she got to know that I had put Yetunde in the family way? Would she not gloat that she had been right all along to suspect my infidelity?

I remembered what the senator had said about not breaking his daughter’s heart. How would he feel about this latest thing happening? How would my parents feel?

If I had known that Yetunde was not on pills, I would have used contraceptives myself. How could I have suspected that she was not? Oh, God.

Somehow, I believed she was probably pulling my legs. What would be her gain if she had my baby? She knew I was married and could not marry her, how could she insist on having that pregnancy?

She would still come to her senses, I deduced, and realize that having that baby would do nobody any good.

The following morning, I woke up to get dressed for the office. she was still holed up in the bedroom so I decided not to disturb her as I moved to my car. She had her own keys to the apartment and so could leave any time she desired.

I drove to the heart of Abuja, still thinking over the whole episode and how I would wiggle my way out of trouble. At work, I tried to concentrate on the job and not to allow her matter to distract me.

I didn’t leave the office until few minutes after six in the evening. I drove home slowly, now that I knew the welcome I would get was no longer as pleasant as it was before.

I was surprised she hadn’t come home. Could she be so busy at work or could she have gone to visit someone? I saw a note on the center table. In eagerness, I picked it up to read the message.

Darling Henry,
I’ve decided to relocate to the flat given to me by dad. There, I hope to give the pregnancy the best of care. I will only come back to your house if you firmly promise to take care of me and the baby. For now, take care of yourself.

I’ve decided to relocate to the flat given to me by dad. There, I hope to give the pregnancy the best of care. I will only come back to your house if you firmly promise to take care of me and the baby. For now, take care of yourself.
Yetunde.

I read the note again. This was unbelievable.

How could Yetunde hold on to her desire to keep the child? She wrote that she would only return to the house if I promised to take care of her and the baby, how could I make such a promise? Oh God.

I decided to call her and see if I could make one more effort to convince her to terminate the foetus. She picked her call after the fourth ring.

“Hello, Yetunde darling.”

“Hi, Henry.”

“How’re you?”

“Fine. Are you ready to make a promise to take good care of myself and our baby?”

I became depressed. “Not exactly.”

“What’s the meaning of that? Look, I hope you’ve not called to tell me any other thing. I don’t want to hear anything about abortion again.”

“Well, I …”

“Good night, Henry.”

She disconnected the line. This her stand was uncomfortable, to say the least. Maybe she would still change her mind, I decided. For the next two days, I didn’t hear anything from Yetunde.

On Friday afternoon, I decided to call her again. I felt I should not just ignore her like that. Surprisingly, her two numbers I had did not get through. Why was that? I had to try again, later.

I travelled to Lagos to rejoin my family. Kike didn’t know a thing about the ‘Yetunde matter’ yet, so mum was the word on it. I only wondered how long I would be able to keep the matter away from her.

I tried again to reach Yetunde. It was on Sunday afternoon I was able to reach her.

“I’ve been trying to reach since Friday,” I said.

“What happened to your lines?”

“Oh, don’t mind me. I misplaced my phones. How’re you?”

“I’m fine. I was kind of worried about you. Hope all is well.”

“Yes, no problem. You’re in Lagos?’

I sighed. “Yes.”

“Have you told her yet?”

I knew what she was referring to. “No, not yet.”

“Why? Why’re you wasting time? Are you scared? D’you want me to tell her?”

“You will do no such thing!” My voice had gone up. I tried to calm myself down. “Don’t worry, I’ll tell her myself. I’ll face that aspect.”

She giggled across the line. “The earlier you do that, the better.”

“I know. I know.”

I finally hanged up, feeling more distressed than I was before.

As usual, I returned to Abuja on Monday morning to continue with my work. The following weekend, I could still not bring myself to telling Kike about my extra marital affair.

Somehow, I prayed and hoped that something would happen and Yetunde would suffer a miscarriage again. Now, that was a wicked thought, but I could not help having it.
