8 Ways the Newly Passed Law By Kano State Requiring Girls To At Least Complete Secondary School Before Marriage Would Impact Northern Nigeria development

It was with great pleasure that some of us heard the news of Kano State passing a law requiring girls to, at least complete their secondary education before marriage. Now that the Government is going this route, we the ordinary people of northern extraction that are fully aware of the benefits of this law are expected to fully support and help in disseminating/educating those who are not aware of the advantages of the law.

For those of us that are still wondering what the benefits are, here are the 8 most important impacts of the said law if fully implemented:

1. Improved women’s reproductive health through planning of childbearing with required spacing. Women with longer formal education would be more aware of family planning that those without formal education. This will further improve the health of the women and children which will also impact that of men.

2. Lower maternal mortality rate through the knowledge acquired in family planning and other related health care practices as it related to childbearing.

3. Lowered Infant and children mortality rate because educated women would seek medical help knowing fully well the benefits of immunization and related health care practices to improve children's mortality rate.

4. Better sanitation within the community as women members of the society would be more aware of the danger of living in a dirty environment and therefore would more hygienic therefore improving the quality of life within the community.

5. Improved socio-economic development of the community as educated women would join in the creation of wealth by joining the workforce of the community.

6. Creation of intergenerational educational benefits as educated mothers would definitely encourage the menfolk to send their daughters' to school, therefore, creating better learning opportunities for their children.

7. Higher life expectancy of men: in today’s Nigeria, men’s life expectancy is lower than that of women partly because of their responsibility. Educated wives will help men in the daily running of the family and community, therefore, reducing the stress on men and improving their life expectancy.

8. Improved quality of family, community life as educated women who earn income would definitely be part of decision making in the family/community, therefore, improving the decision making process to be two-sided as against the usual one-sided decision.

In conclusion, women are important members of society and must be educated to have the required knowledge and skills to affect their family/community in positive ways.

May the Almighty God bless Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje for this singular act, Ameen.

Im surprised nobody noticed you can get married in neighboring states. Your marriage will still be recognized all the same making the law pretty pointless. The neighboring states will gladly collect your money.

You are absolutely right on this one. There are loopholes in the laws even in America. We must appreciate this initiative and encourage the rest of the states in the North to follow suite.

You'll need the law done nationwide wide. Even then if you go to Niger Republic you can get married. Even then you can go to Niger Republic to get it done. It can be done as long parties desire it. What needs to change are the peoples minds and cultures regarding this.

Unfortunately, they won't find any... What they may hold onto is the culture, not Islam.
