Is that strange to you? I'd rather have a private refinery which works and solves our issue than FG run refinery that has not worked since the late 80's.

Don't mind those enemies of this country. Every good news about this country gets them angry. Relocate to their country of origin, they won't. Because no true citizen of this country will behave the way they do.

Socialism is Africa's problem especially in Nigeria where everything is government run. Dangote will enjoy first mover advantage but I expect more private investment in the refinery end of the oil and gas sector. Competition drives down prices as seen with telecoms deregulation in the early 2000's. The role of the government should be to provide security of lives and properties through law enforcement and providing a strong safety net for people who may be struggling.

Yes, competition is the ultimate. That's why government starting from Obasanjo's regime gave out licenses to many who wanted to operate refinery be it modular refinery or any size, but they seem not ready or they don't have the capacity to run it. So every patriotic Nigerian should be happy that we are about having not just anyone, but one of the biggest in the world.

The government shouldn't run refineries in the first place.

What has his inheriting a refinery or otherwise got to do with d issue of monopoly?

I'm truly sorry the question as basic as it is is beyond your comprehension.

You and all the billionaires in your region and mine as well, have the opportunity to start a refinery but you haven't.

Dangote has been bold enough to commence such a humongous task.

Yet you talk about monopoly when he never inherited anything you didn't.

Honestly, it is sheer envy for your likes to call it a monopoly when you have equal opportunity to do so.

Has anybody stopped you from embarking on such a project?

All the billionaires many of you love to boast about from your locality are sleeping whilst Dangote is powering on.

Continue shouting monopoly as if you are playing a board game.

Aha! I knew that this weird tale of "monopoly" would surface again.

The fact is that several people/companies were given licenses to build refineries at the same time (or even before) Dangote was given and most of them have gotten help from the government, but Dangote has been the only one that has made this much progress. I remember this because I was tracking all the refineries at that time (I even created a thread about them).

1) Lekki: A Chinese firm, in conjunction with the Lagos State Government, was supposed to build and operate a refinery in Lekki. The Chinese firm got cold feet along the way and started behaving strangely and that's why Governor Fashola went to get Dangote to replace them.

https://www.nairaland.com/1206125/chinese-company-may-abandon-8bn

2) Dangote: Dangote was initially meant to build his refinery at the Olokola Free Trade Zone on the border between Ondo and Ogun states. The Ondo State Government was the main promoter of the idea and the free trade zone was also meant to have a port. However, the people in the area made humongous demands from Dangote. I think that they believed that they could get all the money they wanted because Dangote was involved. This made Dangote hesitant and the Lagos State Governor eventually succeeded in convincing him to site his refinery in Lekki. The Ondo State Government has recently stated that it is looking for investors that will build the refinery at Olokola.

https://www.nairaland.com/1314895/dangote-site-8bn-refinery-olokola

3) Oando Refinery, Badagry: Oando PLC initially planned to build a refinery in Lekki, but it eventually teamed up with the Chagourys and APM Terminals to propose tha Badagry Energy City. This includes a refinery, a deep sea port and an industrial estate. Nothing has been heard about the project in recent times.

https://www.oandoplc.com/press_release/oando-completes-detailed-bankable-feasibility-on-its-oil-refinery/

4) Orient Refinery: There's also Orient Refinery in Anambra State

https://www.nairaland.com/857145/japanese-chinese-investors-plan-completion

5) Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho also plans to build a refinery in the Ojo area of Lagos.

https://www.nairaland.com/4442477/investor-stakes-450-million-new

I've been tracking these projects since 2011/2012 and they've all received assistance from the Federal and state governments in one form or the other, so where are the other refineries? Dangote seems to be the only one that is serious.

But Dangote is not the only one building a refinery in Nigeria. You see, the government also issued licenses to investors to build modular refineries. These are much smaller refineries and they are cheaper and easier to build. Although it's not getting much attention, but some of the investors are already at the construction stage and work has already begun on the refineries. For example, there's Waltersmith's refinery in Imo State. Below are pictures of the site of the refinery.

https://ncdmb.gov.ng/2019/06/waltersmiths-modular-refinery-begins-operation-q2-2020-wabote/

(By the way, I do not believe that government, which has not been able to run the refineries optimally since the 1990s, will suddenly be able to build and run a refinery).

Kindly expatiate on this point. Remember that refineries are run quite differently from cement factories.

Million dollar question.

Unfortunately, you can't expect anything progressive from a government run by retrogressive individuals who have nothing upstairs. Other countries have left us wayyyyy behind. Yet some dunces are defending this mediocre (to put it mildly) retrogressive govt. Takes one to defend one in any case.

You are right

Dude, public enterprises usually run inefficiently and/or at a loss wherever in the world. Why? Because their objectives are political/altruistic as opposed to being profit-driven.

That is why the most successful nations today are those where the PRIVATE SECTOR invests in public services. That is what is now happening in Nigeria so SHUT UP AND STOP MOANING. GO SET UP YOUR PRIVATE ENTERPRISE AND DO SOMETHING.

When I started reading your comment I saw a mature Minded guy but the end shows what you are made of, who are you to shut me up
