I took interest in the political occurrences of Nigeria a decade ago, and I have come to term of putting a stop to my reactionary moves on the political developments in Nigeria. Nigeria's political and economic quagmire has no foreseeable penacea as the structural engineering of the country is the biggest hindrance and a stumbling block to it's development. Nigeria is currently built on discrimination and supremacy ideals as evident in the way the whole country was structured. The British did not hand over a perfect country to indigenous people no doubt about that, but the idea and projections was that they would build on the existing structures, integrate minorities who were hitherto not recognized or had any significant input into the governance. At one point Nigeria had 3 semi- autonomous regional governments (Eastern, Western and Northern), then another was carved out in the south( Mid West). The same people who in united voice demanded independence from their colonizers became divided over tribal and religious considerations.
Nigeria's political problems began with the North, the premier of Northern Nigeria Ahmadu Bello initiated a discriminatory purge of southerners in the civil service in the North which was made on meritorious consideration because the recruitment process was done by the British.
The North has always had a grudge against the south on religious grounds.
Ethnic and religious killings of southerners especially the Igbos lead to the declaration of an independent state of Biafra by Ojukwu and Effiong, note that this systematic killings began even before the 1966 revolution which was inaccurately termed to be an Igbo coup, so killings in northern Nigeria did not begin soon after 1966 as is widely believed.
Nigeria is as of today made up of Six 6 geopolitical zones( North:West, East and Central/ South: East, West and South) which is further subdivided into 36 State and FCT, with the North been at the advantage which on the other hand the south on a disadvantage. The North alone has 19 States, including the FCT which is situated in the North Central. The South has 17 States. Each state as prescribed by the constitution to produce 3 senators each and an undeclared number of the lower house representatives. FCT has 1 Senator. The North is also advantaged by the creation of LGAs as Kano has more than 40 LGAs while Lagos has 21 or so, it beats one's own imagination to ascertain the criteria used in the creation of those LGAs, if it were to be based on Land mass Niger State should have more LGAs than Kano and if it's based on population Lagos should have had more population than Kano. LGAs receives monthly allocation from the Federal Allocation Account, and all this structural anomalies are not been debated anywhere as I write.
Few weeks ago an activist (Deji) was almost beaten to death by some miscreants who represent the views of the entire Northern Nigeria.
This will be the last time I will react in anyway about the developmental deficit in Nigeria.
Thank you and I wish you all a prosperous New Year.
