Corruption is a universal trend, conceived under the notion that a person wielding power gets all, at any cost. The vice having infested all societal institutions leaves the less privileged to become more miserable.Students in the country’s tertiary institutions have handed down tales to generations about extortionists posing as lecturers and nothing more.

The Guardian has captured some of the ordeals, which have been narrated bit by bit by those who lived to tell their stories. A student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO), Owo, Ondo State, Olajide Olawunmi, revealed that in their school, the lecturers always use the statement “not compulsory but necessary,” to indirectly compel them to participate in whatever they assigned class representatives to do.

“Sometimes they ask to pay between N500 to N1000 for a photocopied research work or assignment. When we eventually get the copy, we discover that it is never up to the paid amount. And then, in a case where we are 200 students, they get roughly N100,000 to 200,000 thousand naira,” he said.

Echoing Ojo’s views, another student from Ekiti State University (EKSU), who identified herself as Esther, said: “Most of our lecturers are fond of such act. They walk into the class, announce that we should pay for our handouts to the class representative and then tell the class representative to put down the names of the students. The lecturer is just indirectly saying that if you do not pay, you fail.”

Some other students have moved beyond handouts and have complained about lecturers confidently asking for bribes in exchange for grades.
A student from the University of Benin (UNIBEN), who pleaded anonymity, said, “Our French lecturer who knows that none of his students knows or understands the course, made us sit in a horrendous pattern of one person per bench during his examination and after the exam, he would ask us to pay N5000, if we want to pass the course. This is a class of 130 students.”

Ukamaka Ude, a student from the University of Nigeria (UNN), confirmed that indeed lecturers do ask for tokens in exchange for grades.“I had a carryover in one of my courses because the lecturer had not included my continuous assessment score to my final result. I went ahead to meet him alongside other students with similar issues. He asked us to buy his textbook, review the given chapters and then submit it with a sum of N5000. We had no choice. We needed the grades,” she said.

Also another undergraduate from Kwara State Polytechnic (KP) revealed that not only do they take bribes for grades; they also take undue advantage of student caught in the act of examination malpractice. “ They asked for bribes from students caught cheating in other not to be reported or have their papers cancelled. Some of our lecturers swiftly turn such incidents to a great business opportunity,” he said.

Proposing possible means of curbing the menace in schools, the students unanimously suggested that if the school authorities could set up effective and incorruptible disciplinary unit that would regularly check and scrutinise the excesses of these lecturers, it would go a long way in reducing the rate of corruption a

As if it's not the same extorted students who later become extortionist lecturers angry.... These days, it's the young lecturers that are the worst..

Nigerians only complain when they are not benefiting from the wrongdoing... #fact

These same students complaining of being extorted most likely have their parents doing their own extorting and thieving in their various offices and businesses undecided.. Or you mean to tell me that all the people perpetrating corruption in government offices and selling substandard/fake goods and engaging in all sorts of economic vice do not have kids who are being extorted in these schools? ... It's payback time bitches grin

They should calm down jare.... Everybody is extorting everybody in Nigeria...Even Buhari is being extorted by the Cabal cheesy

Just relocate to a saner country if you are tired of it all.... Because Nigeria as it stands now is completely finished

This has been going on for donkey years .

Some scapegoats must be made out of the bad eggs among them.

In some cases, graduating in Nigeria Universities do not have anything to do with intelligence, rather who and how much you can sort!

A lecturer in saner climes dare not try this,
He will end up in jail for many years.
It is even unheard of over there anyways.

There was a country!

Extortion began long ago marks are awarded to students for buying handouts and money is also exchanged for grade.Male students always pay in cash while many female students pay in KIND.Most Nigerian public universities are backward in terms of research and development that is why one or two are rarely found among even top thousand universities in the world and government is not even helping matters through budgetary provision to education

It is the system. Later these students will turn out to be worst because they will assume that they were cheated as well. I think the govt have to stand in on this and punish lecturers that are fond of taking advantage of students both financially and otherwise.

Make scapegoats in a very brutal way and you see a change.

I exchange cashapp and zelle funds @ cool rates.

I'm still of the opinion that most of these undue advantage taken by lecturers on students is mostly caused by students....How will you go to exams hall without reading and then expect magic to happen, how will you expect to pass when you hardly attend classes...why won't they take advantage of you, when you are involved in exams malpractices, why won't they take advantage of you, when you are always desparate to be friendly and chat with them as if they are your mates...
Why won't they extort you, when you don't report to appropriate quarters..

I've been involved in an advocacy against unwholesome extortion from lecturers, but I came to find out that students abates these extortions...

For most people commenting here, including the OP, switch positions with any lecturer and you'll flow with the norm instead of fighting it.

Probably sef, a policeman on Nairaland would come here and criticise lecturers. Doctors nko? Pastors and imams, business people, school proprietors, civil servants, contractors no one is exempt.

The shit is too deep, wallahi!

¶Not true. Young lecturers hardly dabble into these corrupt practices. I don't know about polytechnics and colleges but in universities, young lecturers are very cautious and low key. It's the older ones who are usually complicit in things like this.

Ask yourself when last you read or head of any young lecturer who was caught in scandals of this nature? (by young, I mean lecturers under the age of 35)

@Op: My issue with stories like this is that they are seldom balanced. The journalist usually generalises and paints a bleak picture when in reality, only a minority of university academics do things like this. Students are also complicit too when they don't report corruption and extortion or even encourage them by not reading.

This has been on for donkey years and it is a major reason we have a lot of half-baked graduates all over the place. But we have to equally understand that we cannot fight corruption where there is hunger. A lot of our lecturers, especially in the private sector, are paid pittance. We need to sort out the pay problems before this vice can be eliminated.

Lies

The young ones are probably more careful in perpetrating their vice because they do not yet have a strong footing in the system... Talk about the proverbial chicken standing on one leg when in strange territory grin

They will throw all caution to the wind by the time they become doctors and professors, because by then they are almost untouchable...

Cite one instance where young lecturers were implicated in issues of this nature. Just ONE that we can verify.

You cannot presume that young lecturers will turn out to be boldly corrupt in the future. That's just a biased conclusion. Look around you, the world is gradually changing. People are more aware and conscious of doing the right things. The older generation may have caught up slowly with these changes but trust me, the younger ones were born at the heart of globalisation, transculturalism, and technology and they also have a lot of experiences to learn from too.

Don't vilify young lecturers!
