Healthyway15:
Hello... I would like to share some knowledge of Sickle cell disease with us, its symptoms and causes, and the proper recommendation of treatment of the condition for the best results.

Sickle cell anaemia or Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disease in which there aren't enough red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen throughout the body. Normally, red blood cells are round in shape, which gives them the flexibility to travel through even the smallest blood vessels.

However with sickle cell anaemia, the red blood cells are shaped as sickles or crescent moons. This makes them sticky and rigid, and prone to getting trapped in small vessels, which blocks blood from reaching different parts of the body. This can cause pain and tissue damage.

Sickle cell disease (S) is an autosomal recessive condition. You need two copies of the gene to have the disease. If you have only one copy of the gene, you are said to have sickle cell trait. Children are only at risk for sickle cell disease if both parents carry sickle cell trait.

Symptoms of Sickle Cell Disease
The symptoms usually show up at a young age. They may appear in babies as early as 4 months old, but generally occur around the 6-month mark. The general symptoms include :
(i) Episodic pain in the abdomen, chest and joints.

(ii) Frequent infections {when the sickle cells have damaged the spleen (an organ that fights infection), leaving you more vulnerable to infections}.

(iii) Anaemia : Red blood cells usually live for about 120 days before they need to be replaced. But sickle cells usually die in 10 to 20 days. sickle cells break apart easily and die, leaving you with a shortage of red blood cells.

(iv)Jaundice : Yellowing of the eyes and skin.

(v) Delayed growth

(vi) Swelling and pain in hands and feet.

(vii) Excessive fatigue and irritability.

Cause of Sickle cell anaemia
It is caused by a mutation in the gene that tells your body to make the red, iron-rich compound that gives blood its red colour (haemoglobin). Haemoglobin allows red blood cells to carry oxygen from your lungs to all parts of your body. In sickle cell anaemia, the abnormal haemoglobin causes red blood cells to become rigid, sticky and misshapen.

Complications
If the disease is left uncontrolled, one might experience the following complications :

(a)Acute chest syndrome : This life-threatening complication causes chest pain, fever and difficulty breathing.
(b)Organ damage
(c) Pulmonary hypertension : people with sickle cell anaemia can develop high blood pressure.
(d) Stroke
(e) Blindness
(f) Leg ulcers
(g) Gallstones
