So, how did they being in jail, make Gowon release Awo from jail?

Awo wrote to Ironsi pleading his case but Ironsi refused to release from jail citing the dumb excuse that such act may not be couter-productive to his administration bearing in mind that a military HOS was not in our nascent constitution then.

Considering the coup was a federal crime and most of the coupists were easterners, somehow they were all jailed in the eastern province.

Gowon himself, and another officer, i've forgotten, came to meet him to orchestrate a coup against the government(after the sham of '64 elections).
Even the civilians were hoping that the military would take over, and this was why "there was wide spread jubilation nationwide" after the coup.

After the sham '64 election, banjo was actually plooding Ironsi to take over govt whilst Zik too was mouthing similar suggestion till the heads of the armed forces put him in his place by reminding him that they were answerable to the PM and not a figure-head president of the country.

Banjo was not a member of the Jan 15th coup but somehow found himself in prison in the eastern region two days after, on the allegation of another ibo soldier who claimed that banjo was trying to topple the new military govt of Ironsi. Also, while we keep talking about Jan 15 coup, we should also keep talking about July 29 coup that was a clean and clear anti north coup. We can't be talking about Jan 15, yet conveniently ignoring July 29(which happened after the anti North killings that was going on in the northern part of the country)

Ol' boy, don't befuddle yourself. The july coup was obviously anti-ibo after the latter had murdered most of the northern leaders in the jan coup.

The killings in the north was nothing new, afterall they killed ibos in 1945 and 1953 yet it was the same ibos who were desirous about the notion of one united nigeria.

The killings of ibos in may 1966 was the response of the northerners to Ironsi's unification decree which they were obviously opposed to as they believed these will afford the ibos the opportunity to dominate them in their own region and dilute their culture and religion.
