YouTube announced Tuesday the appointment of Alex Okosi as its Managing Director of Emerging Markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
YouTube made this known in a statement made available on Tuesday, noting that the appointment takes effect in April 2020.

Head of YouTube EMEA, Cécile Frot-Coutaz, said, Alex "brings a wealth of experience in the content industries and has a track record for building businesses and audiences in established and new markets. Alex will be leading our existing teams in Russia, Sub Saharan Africa, Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa to drive further expansion in these key markets.”

Also, Alex enthused, “YouTube is a game-changing platform that plays an increasingly important role in our lives today through the dynamic content and innovation that it delivers. I am very excited to be joining Cecile’s leadership team to continue empowering creators and elevating value for viewers and partners across the region."

YouTube said Alex’s appointment will further fuel the development of its creative ecosystem in the EMEA region.

Until his recent appointment, Alex was the Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Viacom/CBS Networks Africa & BET International.

Alex Okosi is a Nigerian-born, US-educated media executive responsible for developing and launching MTV Africa (MTV Base) in February 2005. He has also spearheaded the launch of other localized Viacom brands in Africa encompassing Nickelodeon and Comedy Central. Currently, he is responsible for managing the growth and development of the Viacom International Media Networks Africa business - a multichannel portfolio that reaches over 100 million viewers and includes MTV, MTV base, Nickelodeon, VH1, BET International and Comedy Central.Okosi is the creative force behind the MTV Africa Music Awards, a high-profile event that has helped talented African artists raise their international profile and status.

Early life
Okosi was born in Enugu, Nigeria, the youngest of seven children (2 sisters and 4 brothers). The family was originally from Onitsha. His father was a civil servant who modeled persistence and a strong work ethic for him - character traits that continue to serve him professionally.

Education
Phillips Exeter Academy
Growing up in the United States, Okosi attended various schools in Florida, Nebraska, Missouri, and New York before attending Philips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire.
St. Michael's College
Okosi attended St. Michael’s College, a private, residential liberal arts Catholic college located in Colchester, Vermont. He was awarded a scholarship to play Division II basketball for the Purple Knights and was co-captain his senior year. He graduated magna cum laude in 1998 with a double major in Business Administration and Economics.
UCLA
Okosi was an MBA candidate at UCLA before taking a leave of absence to develop MTV base in 2003.

Wow. What strikes me most about him is that he amassed these achievements despite his rank in the family. Most last borns that I know of show a lackadaisical and indifferent attitude towards life. Hanging onto the baby-of-the-house mentality, they go on to become the runt of the litter amongst their siblings in all aspect and a liability. This young man has proven to be different. Congratulations!

When you have the right set up, you can achieve anything.
All those people that studied in the US always end up coming to Africa to set up something that becomes a hit back to back. Why? Because they have the right set up. If at this point you're still thinking of educating your child in Nigeria, I pity you.
