Convinced that this is one of the most genuine demonstrations of the federal government’s commitment towards the ease of doing business policy, the Inter-ethnic Network for Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and Buhari, INCRAB, lauds President Muhammadu Buhari over the decision to divert all vessels that are unable to discharge at Lagos terminals within four days to eastern ports.

The diversion of vessels to eastern ports will automatically trigger development and all-round economic growth in the host States. The importance of this new policy are numerous, ranging from employment generation, rapid economic growth, infrastructural advancement and several other growth indicators.

As a pro-society group and watchdog, we invite the general public and most particularly, the Rivers State Government to key into the vast array of opportunities these laudable decision by President Buhari provides. If well harnessed, the diversion of vessels to eastern ports will not only curb crime rate by providing employment for the teeming citizens – youth and women – alike, but will also stimulate rapid economic growth.

With this new policy, Rivers State is in for a massive economic boom, unprecedented development and improved Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, however, this depends on how well the State government is able to manage this rare opportunity.

We therefore, admonish Gov. Wike to jettison all manner of sentiments and politics, co-operate with the federal government and all relevant stakeholders and take full advantage of this opportunity to better the lot of Rivers State and its people.

More than before, this is the time for the Governor to take the issue of security in the State seriously, expand roads around the ports and create more access roads if possible.

Now, smart Nigerians will be looking to make this happen by coming up with ideas so it actually works.

They will first note that the diversion of "vessels that are unable to discharge at Lagos terminals within four days", is a flaw in the system, and work on ways to ensure ships are diverted so that they do not have to wait anywhere, which is why they would be sent directly to Eastern Ports even before they leave their destination instead.

The Eastern Ports would see this as an opportunity to challenge Lagos Ports so shippers will prefer to go East than go to that jakujaku Lagos! And we shall do this by making it easier to discharge stuff at the Eastern Ports and move it to the rest of Nigeria by improving transport (roads, rail) from the East to the rest of Nigeria. And thankfully, we would not have to do much, since merely eliminating the corruption and theft that is ravaging Lagos Ports would make Eastern Ports the desired destination for ships since their turnaround time can easily be reduced thereby reducing cost and increasing profit for all involved.

The East on the whole would see this as a great opportunity for investment and development in many diverse sectors such as infrastructure (roads, rail, ports, warehouses), technology (apps to track shipping, goods), training, etc that would create employment for mainly Easterners (since we are the majority in our East!), and further development of the East which would make it the envy of the languishing rest of Nigeria that is always begging government for opportunity to develop but never see the opportunities when it is handed to them like this one has been handed to the East.

But, unfortunately, none of this is likely to happen anytime soon because too many Easterners are far too busy with Biafra and Ipob and Kanu than the development of any part of a country some call a zoo.

Though, I hope you all will slag me off for this and post evidence just so I am proved very very wrong and that Eastern Ports are Amaka!
