Tyrannosaurus rex, the king of the dinosaurs, has gained a new family member.

The fragments of a fossilized skull belonging to a previously unknown species of tyrannosaur were found in southern Alberta, Canada. And it's all thanks to John De Groot, a farmer and palaeontology enthusiast who found the fossil, according to a release from the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta, where the fossils will be displayed later this year.

This is the first new tyrannosaur found in Canada in 50 years and one of the oldest tyrannosaur species found in North America. And researchers believe that Thanatotheristes degrootorum lived about 2.5 million years before its close relative, Tyrannosaurus rex

Thanatotheristes degrootorum was stalking what is now North America as a formidable predator 79.5 million years ago. It could reach between 26 and 30 feet in length and weighed more than two tons as an adult. Tyrannosaurus rex could reach about 40 feet in length.

Its name combines Thanatos, the Greek god of death, with theristes, or "one who reaps or harvests." The second part of the name is in honor of De Groot.

He found the fossils during a hike near Hays, Alberta.

"The jawbone was an absolutely stunning find. We knew it was special because you could clearly see the fossilized teeth," said De Groot.
Unique aspects of the fossil helped researchers determine it was a different species, according to a study published Monday in the journal Cretaceous Research.

"Thanatotheristes can be distinguished from all other tyrannosaurs by numerous characteristics of the skull, but the most prominent are vertical ridges that run the length of the upper jaw," said Jared Voris, lead study author and a University of Calgary PhD candidate.

A wealth of dinosaur fossils have been uncovered in Canada, specifically Alberta, over the years. And it's also home to the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, Canada's only museum devoted to researching ancient life. This newly discovered fossil joins the family of other tyrannosaurs found in Canada: Daspletosaurus, Gorgosaurus, Albertosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex.

Daspletosaurus was the last tyrannosaur fossil discovery in Canada, found in 1970.
The discovery of this fossil also enabled researchers to determine that different groups of tyrannosaurs lived across North America, separate from each other during the Late Cretaceous period between 74 and 80 million years ago.

The Daspletosaurini group, which Thanatotheristes belonged to, roamed between southern Alberta and Montana, while others could be found in central Alberta or in the southern parts of the US.

Known contemporaries of Thanatotheristes also discovered in Alberta include the horned dinosaur Xenoceratops and dome-headed dinosaur Colepiocephale. Many other dinosaurs found in Alberta were dated between 66 and 77 million years ago.

Thanatotheristes highlights diversity, not only in Canada's fossil record, but the tyrannosaur family as well.

"This discovery is significant because it fills in a gap in our understanding of tyrannosaur evolution," said Dr. François Therrien, curator of dinosaur palaeoecology at the Royal Tyrrell Museum.

Who created dinosaurs?
Were they part of the paired animals that Noah saved too?

I wonder how religious people feel when they read news like this.

Do they doubt their faith because I'm beginning to.

Science has come to enlighten, it cut across many middles, religion inclusive. It is a very important tool as it sheds more light concerning many of the things recorded in the Bible and other historical documents, and I like it. Yummy!

For me my Faith is not shaken but becomes toughen when I read articles like this, because I know the earth is more than 4-6 thousand years old. Poor understanding has made many settled for this kind of interpretation.

According to my oga at the top @budaatum, all needs to open their mind.

Thanks bro.

God bless.

What actually happened to Neanderthals sub human species will throw more light on how we evolved.
Why is traces of their genes still allegedly found in some Caucasians?

It still doesn't change the fact that the earth is not millions of years old as some set of scientists would want us believe.
Neoteny:

Of course it's not millions of years old
It's billions of years old
gingercrazy:
It has been existing more than million years ago? Infinity loop ?
Check Google. Many archeological findings have put the age of the earth at around 7000 years, which many biblical theologians say is very close their calculations.
urahara:

Noahs story was obviously a myth. There are over 700 dinosaur species, meaning that oga Noah would have to have packed 1400 dinosaurs .
You sef reason am.
gringrin Ignorance overload. The Bible say the animals were packed after their kind, meaning only one specie for each family of animal. Were you thinking he packed hundreds of species for each animal? You sef reason am

Nice one bro,
The truth is science has never contradicted the scriptures, only confuse scientists do so.
These discoveries justify the book of genesis.

Allah doesn't told us how old is the world, and he said there are creatures before us.... Muslims don't even have issues with evolution except when it comes to humans evolve from monkeys.... Because Allah said humans are special creatures amongst his creations with a free will. Unlike in Judaism is 6k old while tempered injila is 4k old
